This is a private thread for ThaWizKid's character Adran Galanodel.

It will contain:

Purple Worm.org/Rules is your friend.

At lvl 3 you have:
1 weapon proficiency slot to spend
5 (+6)= 11 Non-weapon proficiency slots to spend (the Complete Wizard has some class kits if you're interested in that)
Up to 6 languages (not including Elven, that one is free. I recommend getting Common)

Thac0 is 20 (takes the place of base attack bonus, that's a 3/4e thing)

Don't forget to roll your %chance to learn for each spell. You can re-attempt a 1st lvl spell twice, but not a 2nd level spell. If you fail the roll for any, you can pick a different spell to attempt

You get Read Magic and Detect Magic spells free.
-you can pick up to 5 other 1st level spells. Given the two in your list (MagMissile and Prot from Evil), you have 3 more
-Make a quick list of 3-9 second level spells you might want. I will roll randomly to determine which you of these you get as your freebie.

Most everything looks good so far. I will start tracking the changes in the first post on this thread to match the format the other character sheets are in.

A few adjustments:
-Roll for your hps gained at 2nd and 3rd level

-To qualify for Militant Wizard kit you need a Str score of 13 or higher, so you’ll have to swap your 10 on str with either your 14 wis or 13 dex score if you want to keep the kit.

-You get a bonus Weapon proficiency slot (from the kit) so you can choose a second weapon from the Militant Wizard WP list.

-It looks like you listed all of the non-weapon proficiencies from the kit description. The Endurance NWP is a bonus, so it is free for you. The others have to be purchased, and are only recommendations. So, while you are welcome to take them, you don’t have to take them all (and in fact it would take all of your NWP slots) You might consider taking some magic-related NWPs (spellcraft, reading/writing) instead of some of the ones recommended by the kit.

The Language non-weapon proficiency is tied to a specific language, which isn’t necessary unless you want to add a language beyond your bonus ones you already have listed.

-I rolled your bonus 2nd level spell, and it was Web. Don’t forget to pick another 2nd level spell and roll to learn.

-You won’t have enough money to purchase a longbow (composite longbow is 100 gp, regular longbow is 75 gp) unless you forego your minor magic item (doing so will give you an extra 125 gp to start) Check out the second post in the Rules thread for more info on this. There is also a post about the Cantrip non-weapon proficiency there, which you might want to look at.

The only questions I have now is whether my proficiencies are correct? I guess I just bought I had to grab them all from the Militant Wizard kit, but I ended up grabbing some from the Wizard proficiencies as well. If they aren't correct, could you make suggestions? As for the composite long bow, I could actually live with a long bow or a staff if I can't afford it? What magic items do I have that I could forego to afford the bow? Is there any other suggestions that you could make to get me started? I'm still learning as this is my first foray into 2e and it seems very different from Basic and 5e! Thanks again.

No problem, I’m happy to help. And yes, 2e is very different from 5e, but there are a plethora of free resources for it (like purpleworm) :) I began a copy of your character sheet-in-progress on the first post for this thread so we can keep track of the changes. Let me know if you see anything there that seems confusing or incorrect.

NWPs:
The ones you have selected look good. You don’t need the Language NWP unless you plan to take a language beyond the ones you already have listed. With your most recent list, (the Endurance is free from your kit, the language nwp was unnecessary, that means you have spent only spent 5 slots so far [2 eng, 1 Nav, 1 Re/Wr, 1 Splcrft]; meaning you have 6 slots left to spend.

I would recommend taking the Cantrip NWP (1 slot. Details are on the General Rules thread)
You might also want to take at least some of the recommended NWPs from your kit (like swimming, riding or direction sense)

There are some NWPs not listed in the Player Handbook related to spellbooks that you might consider:
-Book Binding: (1 slot for wizards)
the wizard can assemble a book (including a new spell book once he pays for materials) in 2 weeks +1day/5 pgs. Binding his own drops the price of a new spellbook by 50% (they are typically 50 gp/pg!)

-Papermaking: (1 slot for wizards)
The character knows how to manufacture paper (from rag pulp, bark, linen, hemp, wood, etc). The character must have access to an area to work. It takes 1-2 weeks to make enough for a spellbook. Making his own paper drops the price of a new spellbook by 50%. Making his own paper and binding his own book reduces the price of a new spellbook by 75%.


Magic item: (In the 2nd post of the General Rules thread)
You can start with 1 minor magical item: a +1 weapon, tool, potion, scroll, etc of up to 500xp value (there is a sample list of what I’ll allow in the rules thread posts 3 and 4). Base cost of the item must be paid out of starting gold (ex: if you can’t afford platemail, you can’t get a platemail +1 as your magic item). If you don’t spend all of your magic item xp you get back 25 gp/100xp not spent. +1 items always cost 500 xp for this buy.

A player can choose to forego the free magic item in order to:
-Start with an extra 125 gp
-(Wizard only) start with a Familiar. (see details in the rules thread)


Money and Equipment:
With the equipment list above you have spent 53 gp 1sp, 9cp out of your 60 gp (nice job staying within budget ;) )
A normal longbow is 75 gp
A Composite longbow is 100 gp

Honestly, the longbow has the same maximum range and damage as the composite longbow and is substantially cheaper. You could take a magic item of up to 200 xp (like a potion of healing, speed, ventriloquism, philter of love, etc.) and get the 75 gp for the 300 xp not spent and pick up your longbow.

I have updated your sheet at the top of this thread, which I will keep up to date as we go along.

Forgot to mention earlier that the spell components pouch is 3 gold. I added that and a belt (to hold your scabbards, pouches, etc). Also, what kind and how much paper did you want? Paper 2gp/sheet, Papyrus 8sp/sheet, parchment 1gp/sheet.

Everything looks good. Did you have a particular world in mind that Adran is from? Otherwise I have a generic place he can be from (magic is fairly common there, as are elves)

Any additional info you can give me about him and his background will help (even if they are just simple concepts like he is trying to find a relative or has a rival magic user, etc). It can be anything you want. If nothing comes to mind don’t worry about it, I can work with what you have already given me.

Typically I start players out in their private threads (here) and then transition them into Ravenloft as part of some interaction in their homeworld. Let me know about the paper and homeworld things and then I think we can get started :)

Typically I start players out in their private threads (here) and then transition them into Ravenloft as part of some interaction in their homeworld. Let me know about the paper and homeworld things and then I think we can get started :)


The pouch sounds good, I will have 36.5gp after purchasing it. I will take 5 pieces of parchment paper which would then leave me with 31.5 gp.

Adran grew up in Waterdeep to Merchant and Fine Jeweler Artisan parents. At the young age of 80 a Wizard came into the shop and said that he had had a vision of a new young apprentice that he would find there - it ended up being Adran of course! Since that very day, Adran took a leap of faith that Ohgma, the god of knowledge, had led this mage to him for a purpose. Adran came to find out in the following months that he had a natural ability to use magic and memorize spells. His parents, though saddened that he wouldn't take over the family business, were happy that he had found his true calling. One day 20 years later, his mentor and friend lay dying in his bed and told him of an ancient scroll of power that had held some great secret of Wizardry and been lost for three centuries - it had been stolen by an evil band of Wizards. The mentor bade Adran to begin his search for the scroll, not only to gain the knowledge held within, but to use the power for good and to punish the thieves. Adran has been on numerous adventures in the last 50 or so years and has never been home since then. He still looks for the scroll, listening to the people in the streets, other mages, etc, for any clue that he can find. Adran's life's mission is to find the scroll and harness the power it offers - and make those who are evil pay for what they have stolen.

I believe since Adran is from Waterdeep, would that not be the Faerun setting?
