5th Edition

Post by TigerStripedDog »

I don't see any threads on here about this yet. Maybe there was a rule and we aren't allowed to talk about this? I also see no 4E subforums.

If we ARE allowed to talk about this, what does everyone think about it? Has anyone done the beta test?

This is the first I've heard of a fifth edition, can you tell me about any major changes from the 4th?

It's called D&D Next, officially. But everyone is calling it 5E, because come on, that's what it is.

I haven't been following it, so I can't give any specifics on what kind of game it will be like.

From what I know it's official name is just "Dungeons and Dragons". They have dropped the D&D Next moniker. Though Jaded is right, it is unofficially referred to as 5th edition for clarity.

I agree with Crasez in that I have heard they have gone through some major effort to make this thematically more like the earlier editions (1e, 2e). There will be no Thac0, and there will be elements of both 3.5 and a smattering of stuff from 4E. Whether these borrowings are thematic or are mechanical I don't know. If I had to guess, they are likely going to be sticking to 3E/3.5E concepts of Armore Class and Hit Modifiers... that being numbers that grow arbitrarily larger without limit (as opposed to the 1e and 2e closed 10 to -10AC/20 to -10 Thac0 systems in the older editions). There was a beta test, but I don't know how far it got.

I would really love to see the proficiency system return, and the feat system gone forever. Maybe modify it to be a combination of skills/proficiency. Hard to say. I do know that they claim to be moving back to an RP emphasis, and to make it feel less like a video game or tactical board game.

But I never played the beta. Would love some input from someone who has.

I wish I could but I can't open RAR files from work. I will have to get to it tomorrow or this weekend.

But can you tell us about your experience Cole?

Which just goes to show how little attention I've been paying the whole thing.

I was also wondering about the lack of 4E on this site when I returned. I remember there being a huge dislike for it on here before I left, so was not really surprised by the lack when I returned, and just assumed that everyone was sticking their head in the sand and pretending that it doesn't exist. If anyone remembers I like playing and running 4E, like playing and running 3 and 3.5, and enjoyed the brief exposure to aDND 2E. I would like to see some more 4E stuff on here.

I would also like to see any news about 5E (let's just keep calling it that) that comes up, like several other people I heard a big ta-do about it when the news first broke and then nothing since then.
"He surrendered? sorry, I didn't hear it; I was too busy chopping off his head."

I have no experience with it yet :( Was invited and then never had time to play it or beta test it per-say. Just skimming over it I would say it has several qualities of 2e/3.5e and some 4e combined. IMO, thus far it looks pretty good. It actually looks like someone took the time to rid of ALL the 4E shit nobody likes, collected up the good from 3E (numbers going up, etc.) and the best part of 2E again... the RP factor ;)

Once I actually READ the material I'll be back with I'm sure some disgruntled decision
