CH. 8: Proving Worth

This 2E Dragonlance game is set in the city of Haven, during the War of the Lance. Haven is a city undergoing great upheaval. First massive numbers of refugees pour in, then the city is conquered by a draconic army. Can our heroes survive under this dark occupation?

Fragile and tired but motivated by fear for his life, Tulbas carefully listens by the door, then carefully examines it assuming his capture would try to prevent him from exiting the room by means of lock or trap. He then tries to open the door and peek out, his intention to find a hiding place where he could learn at least one defensive spell and one offensive, to give himself a better chance at surviving.

========================================
(OOC: Tulbas will listen by the door for noises from outside and if all is quiet will check the door for traps and try to open it.)

Arulia scrambles backwards, pulling Pen with her to the relative and temporary safety of the group. "Stay here, keep safe," she advises, gently pushing him through the door. Surveying the now-desperate fight against the snake cultists, she decides that the danger she's in outweighs her need for secrecy. "After all," she thinks, "if I die in this place, I'll have done no good for Fizban in any case." With a desperate prayer, she calls on His power.

(OOC: Arulia is casting hold person (casting time 5) on Histachii 04. Here's hoping...)

[Ooc: thanks much. I figure if it worked on the snake-rogue it would work on snake-priest... didn't realize he had snake legs.]

Grubnick bashes at Histachii 2, trying to cut down the number of opponents quickly. Speaking to Felran, Get that one right behind me so I can form a line with you two. Calling back to the room, Gregeddin, you and Arulia clear out these two that broke through... and get me some ranged support up here. If those two friends of Haahque's want to earn their keep, now is the time!

Haahqae does something vaguely unfarmilar, he thinks, and not out loud, before he acts.
Why aren't they falling back to the second room? Do those fools not know a simple hero's door combat trick? Well if they're not going to fall back, then we have to fall forward. Umm... metaphorically speaking, actually falling forward would be rather counter productive, then we'd have to get back up again and that would just not look heroic at all.
"Ok, it looks like we need to move forward to suport them, let's go."

Once Haahqae sees that Ismene is in the room and not going to get trampled by a bunch of people leaving, he'll move forward to a position he can shoot, and let an arrow fly at a histachii.

Haahqae, Arulia, Gobax, Felran and Ne-Chanz (Deserted Building)
"Damn it," Gregeddin mutters. "That goblin sure is barking out a lot of orders for someone who is just 'tagging along.' He moves to the doorway and begins to play an inspiring tune on his zhang, which gets the party pumped up.

Ismene withdraws further, then drops to her knees to catch her breath.

Arulia calls upon the power of Paladine and tries to force the histachii to hold still, but it shrugs off the divine power like water off of a duck's back.

Felran draws his long sword, a weapon of less power but he is more skilled in, and quickly cuts down the histachii behind Gobax with one good swing.

The remaining histachii swarm over Felran, Ne-Chanz and Gobax, but the three are able to hold their ground and keep them at bay, save for the blinded minotaur who takes several more wounds. The histachii behind the front line charges at Arulia, clawing away at her. Keeping her shield up, she's able to keep it away. Xyleena, Haahqae and Yvette all enter the room and fire at it. Pen stubbornly returns, drawing a strange bow like weapon from his pack and taking a shot at it, too. "I'm not useless! My vision is just blurry, is all," he says. He misses, of course. But the other three all hit, bringing it down.

Squinting at the fallen histachii, Pen asks aloud, "Did I get it? I think I got it."

Kendra Greylock (Haven's Vale)
Grev and Krup come out of hiding from opposite directions at the female elf, one on either side of her. While she is distracted, Tern manages to throw a dagger perfectly at her chest, dropping her.

Slinn and Perp do likewise, with Slinn coming up on one of the elves, slashing with his claws. This gives Perp the chance to sneak up behind him and stab him with his spear through the shoulder, doing serious damage.

Kendra comes up behind the last elf, using the flat of her blade to try and knock him out. He proves far more agile than expected, though, and easily avoids her blows before drawing his sword and clashing blades with her. "I'll never tell you our leader's location, human scum!" he replies fervently.

"Sorry Pen, your arrow looked majestic as it skid along the ground, but Yvette managed to drop it before I could lodge a second arrow in it." No point hiding the truth from him. Too much was hidden from him already.

Haahqae draws forth another arrow and continues his barrage. The histachii have them outnumbered, likely have better spell backup and have the advantage of knowing the terrain better, but one advantage the heroes do have is long ranged support, so Haahqae does his part to provide this.

(shoot a pair of arrows at histachii, preferably #2)

Grubnick grits his teeth and holds his forward position a bit longer, hoping his luck and armor continue to protect him. Anytime you want to take over and come up with an idea of your own, I'm all pointy red ears Gregeddin, he jibes sarcastically as he tries to down Histachii #2. Felarn, I'll cover you. See if you can help the minotaur. Ne-Chanz, we'll get you cover. Don't worry, there's just one and he's right in front of you.

"You don't understand," Kendra says through gritted teeth as she pushes the elf back. She goes in for another non-lethal attack. "I'm his contact inside the city. He needs to be warned that we are coming," she explains. "I can't do anything against them by myself. I'll let you go, but we will follow shortly after. That gives you a small amount of time to warn him, and set up an attack."

With no nearer threats, Arulia hurries over to the half-wall where the thick of the fighting is. Once there, she wades into combat and steps up to take a place in the front line of defense. As she does so, she calls out to those behind her. "We'll hold them back! Get the injured people to safety!"

(OOC: Arulia wishes to move to just south of Felran/west of Grubnick and attack Histachii 02. If standing over the body of Histachii 01 gives her a penalty to attack/defense/whatever, then so be it. No worries about her failed spell--she wouldn't have known that it didn't work on these things, and even if I had known it out of character, I wouldn't have felt right acting on that knowledge in-character. Next time, though, she'll be the wiser for her experience!)

Haahqae, Arulia, Gobax, Felran and Ne-Chanz (Deserted Building)
The Histachii continue their relentless assault. Ne-Chanz is continually scratched and bitten, until the minotaur's fur is now more crimson than white. Working together, he and Felran manage to fell the histachii attacking him. Haahqae manages to kill another with an arrow through its chest.

"An idea of my own?" asks Gregeddin, nocking an arrow into his composite long bow. "That's why I said to fall back, so we could bottleneck them one at a time! If your hope is to get half the group killed so you can get a bigger share of reward, don't think I'll let you get away with it," the bard warns. He puts an arrow into another histachii, wounding but not killing it.

"Hey," Pen interrupts after firing blindly again with his weird bow thing. "I can see again!" He blinks rapidly as if to confirm that.

Kendra Greylock (Haven's Vale)
Kendra lashes out with two more non-lethal attacks, but the elf easily parries them. "Then why are you helping those abominations? You should be helping us against them!"

The Baaz, meanwhile, manage to take out the other elf. "Hold on, we're coming, Greylock!" calls Grev, but Krup stops them.

"Hold on...if she can't beat one elf by herself," the captain points out, trailing off.

The other Baaz seem to understand and instead just cheer her on. "Come on, Greylock! Kick his lilly white elven arse!" shouts Tern.

The elf manages to get a slight cut on Kendra's cheek, drawing blood. The Baaz begin to boo and hiss, and Perp almost runs to help her, until Krup physically restrains the young Baaz by grabbing his shoulder and shaking his head.

Kendra has no choice at this point. If she lets the elf go, the others will see it. She manages to slam the flat of her blade into the side of the elf's head, dropping him like a sack of potatoes. The other Baaz cheer for her, but Krup simply watches, arms crossed.

Kendra takes a step back from the fallen elf, and touches her cheek for a moment. She looks towards the other Baaz cheering her on, and sighs. "He can lead us to the others," she says. She figures that is a good enough explanation as to why she used the flat of her blade rather than outright killing him.

Don't be an idiot, Grubnick retorts to the male bard, why would I bother patching anyone up if I was trying to kill them off? I'm trying to get to the priest before he opens the door to the rest of the complex... unless you think this is the last room and he can't just shout to bring in another ten or twenty enemies. I already asked for someone to take Ne-Chanz place since he's blinded but I haven't seen any volunteers. Pen, you game now? And if you haven't noticed, I put my own leathery red skin on the front line. He accentuates the last comment with a swing at the Histachii in front of him. (#7)

[Ooc: lol, I'm loving the back and forth with the bard. I wonder if they'll end up friends or absolutely hating each other... it seems like an either/or at this point...]

More of the snake-people fall, but Arulia notices that they're taking a toll on the party even as they do. The minotaur, in particular, looks to be in bad shape, ribboned with bleeding cuts as he is. "Minotaur!" she calls, forgetting his name in the heat of battle. "Fall back, Minotaur, we'll take your place in the line!" To Felran, she says, "Give him cover!", before moving herself to take his place in the front line.

(OOC: Arulia wishes for Ne-Chanz to stay where he is, and for Felran to move to the square in front of him (where Histachii 08's body is). Whether they understand her intent is another matter, but if they do, she'll move to complete the line by standing over Histachii 02's body. She will, of course, attack whichever Histachii ends up in her range--probably Histachii 03.)

(OOC: Aww, it looks like Kendra's made quite the impression on her companions (except Krup, it seems)! It's kind of cute if you forget that she's fighting against the elves...)

"That's great Pen, but you got some work to do, I'm currently leading you one lizard-thing to none this fight. Good luck trying to catch up."

Haahqae will, of course, disregard his own better judgement (does he have better judgement to disregard?) and stay in the same spot to unleash two more arrows on the histachii, preferably aiming for #7 until it drops.
