CH. 5: Vying Factions

This 2E Dragonlance game is set in the city of Haven, during the War of the Lance. Haven is a city undergoing great upheaval. First massive numbers of refugees pour in, then the city is conquered by a draconic army. Can our heroes survive under this dark occupation?

"To Victory!" Haahqae echos, doing likewise to his drink.

"Victory thricefold!" Gregeddin concurs with a long swig of ale water. Feeling quite high spirited and optimistic, the bard decides the busy lunch service could use a cheery drinking sing song. He begins in a rowdy tone, stomping his foot to the beat, getting faster through the verse...

"When yer feelin' rather lucky, 'av a drink!
When a lady finds yer funny, 'av a drink!
When there's nothing left to do, 'cause the harvest 's through and through,
Well then it's time for you know what, 'av a drink!"

Haahqae and Gregeddin (Steel Tankard, Common room)
A number of people applaud and cheer at Gregeddin's performance and the overall mood seems slightly better than it was when they first entered. "Not bad," the innkeeper comments from behind the bar.

Gregeddin holds his mug up in acknowledgement before taking a hefty quaff, followed by a refreshed "Ahhhh"

"Haahqae, we still need to inform the others of the meeting time and the latest developments, particularly Tulbas."

Understanding he had somewhat stirred the cultists faith, Tulbas looks at the grey cloaks and says, "I had believed in Darewind like you do, but his stubbornness and selfishness shakes this belief. You know me and my deeds." He looks at the leaders of the cultists. "I care nothing but these good folks welfare and so I've proved it." he waves at the people around him while still talking to the leaders. "Do as you will, but don't follow blindly until you wholeheartedly believe this is really the master will. As for me, I'll try to help you is you seek my council, but I won't follow Darewind until he proves he has divine powers and speaks for the master, and not just using tricks to rule your minds and souls. You want to overthrow the Seekers? Well, you are right in that, but don't go rampage the city while doing so. Don't fill the streets with blood. The people of the city are the same as you. Victims. And when bloodshed begins it strikes both sides. Think in what future you want to live and think of your families. Sometimes you have no choice, but is it this time? There is no Holy Guard left. Peaceful takeover is possible. But before overthrowing the current government, consider who will replace it, and make sure your voice and freedom are secured."
He glances once again at Darewind and says, "The old gods are missing for hundreds of years, I really hoped you are here to introduce a true god. But you have failed us. You are just an opportunist trying to harness these people suffering and need to your own benefit, and by doing so you have stirred the Master fury and now we can only hope he will still favor his true followers." And then he leaves the square.

Tulbas quickly rides to the mageware shop. He lets his mount go and knocks on the window as agreed.

When he is let in he says with anxiety, "I've dared Darewind hoping he will prove himself. He didn't. He murdered a Holy Guard and seeds fear in the peoples hearts. I just burst out, and when it was to late to conceal my disbelief in him, I tried at least to shake the others belief in him. I don't know if I done well, but now I fear he will send people here to take me and my uncle down!!!" Tulbas says wide eyed. "What have I done..." he murmurs. "I know my uncle placed guards over the shop. I'm not sure what is better to keep him here or try to hide him somewhere." He looks at Darga and Kendra somewhat pleadingly, "You know where can we hide from the cultist and lay low? Darga, maybe you can run to old Marvin and explain what happened? He might know what to do."

=================================================
(OOC: Regarding the 'Mount' spell. Sorry, I should have read the description. I guess I just made it what I needed it to be. And I could find no other spell to achieve the 'awe' effect I was looking for.
Regarding the shop guards and charms, does Tulbas know their capability? Does he believe they can withstand attack? Burning the house and such?)

"...You confront Darewind in front of a bunch of his followers?" Kendra asks in disbelief. "That was almost as bad as me arresting him in front of a bunch of his followers. I don't think you can really hide anywhere with any of us. Though, if we help the thieves guild, they might be able to hide you."

"The thieves guild?" Tulbas says absentmindedly, "I don't know anyone there... I hope I can leave him with Marvin." Tulbas says, starting to pack some cloth and food. "Damn all those stupid cultists who follow Darewind blindly. I don't get how no one had suspected he is tricking them. I hope the recent event will open their eyes." He looks then at Kendra, "How well do you know the Seekers council? Are they all corrupted or is there anyone who actually care for the welfare of the people?"

"I should begin preparing for tomorrow myself," Jaymes says. He finishes off his drink, pays his tab and stands up. "I'll see you in the morning then." Then he heads upstairs.

(OOC: For the most part, Raetmal relied on the people's own superstitions. People believe they'll be blown up or turned into toads or whatever if they try and break in, and that discourages many. As for real defenses, most are placed on the backroom where all of the magical items are kept. Beyond that, the windows are enchanted to be unbreakable. In an emergency, Raetmal can place a number of spells on the front door--well, he could if he were conscious, anyway. The front door itself is reinforced with steel and has a strong lock, but it's not invulnerable.)

"I don't know the council all that well, but I get the feeling that Elistan actually cares about the people," Kendra says. "And if he killed a seeker guard, he probably has put fear into a lot of people," she points out.

"Indeed a fine idea. Best of luck to his uncle and all, but it sounds like the mage should be with us for his own good." With a last gulp Haahqae finishes his drink, thanks the hunter and starts working his way back towards the door.

Haahqae and Gregeddin return to the mageware shop. Once there, they find Tulbas frantically packing. Kendra and Darga are also present, which makes things convenient as everyone is in one place.

"Well we've got some good news to report, the recruits are all set for tomorrow morning, but what seems to be bothering us here?" Gregeddin asks as he enters the shop.

"Some of the recruits look pretty good. And powerful too. One's a gnome, so you can be sure she's competent. One's a half ogre or something big and strong. One of 'em already has a battle scar to prove his feats, he also said he was a friend of Raetmal's already. Plus we should also probably mention the part where Darewind is trying to kill Tulbas, ya know when he's here to hear about it."

"Huh? Who told him that? Our conversation with Scarface was very private and conspicuous and we haven't told anyone else about it yet."
