"Aye, I have no desire to spread panic. Of course I'm staying here, so I'll have little contact with the public until we all return. Speaking of which, may I have a few soldiers to come with us into the cave? I'd like to re-examine the portal in more detail." Before Octo can give any restrictions, Bastian continues, "Our first priority is flight at the first sign of trouble."

Gnaeus drops his partner some feet before approaching Octo so that he may give proper salute to the man, which he does upon coming within range. He allows the others to speak first, maintaining his military posture and a coolly neutral countenance. Pounceous, for his part, merely lands on his feet then lays down precisely where he was dropped to continue his nap as if it were he who ordered the man to place him.

"Sir, as the Priest says we are requesting permission to study this so-called gate in person, unraveling the arcane is my specialty." He speaks like a man still in the legion, which until only some months ago he was. "We will not endanger camp or country with our reconnaissance."

[Stik]

"I have no objection to a group going in there, provided you do not touch anything. Now we have all seen dramas in which some patriarch or wizened old man or senior officer dictates such a condition to his children or fellow travelers or underlings and is ignored, which inevitably results in some calamity or other.
"I know that I do not have to worry about such, because you, Magus, are fresh out of the Legions, and know the penalty for disobedience.
"And because I shall be sending Barber in there with you, with orders to smack you in the head if he even thinks you are going to do something stupid."

"Bastian can be trusted." Angel says sternly, "Thank you for your help getting the Body back to Master Fraso." She bows, "Your help is appreciated."

[Ismaels-Legacy]

"Aye! For example, I beheld Angel, here, rise from the cold waters of the bay clad in nothing but shift and seafoam, and yet I did not touch her." He takes the span of a single breath to wink at his companion before continuing. "So if you give me a direct order not to touch a bunch of enchanted rocks, I feel that I should be able to heed your wishes!"

Papa turns away, and walks to his horse and sighs, muttering under his breathe to no one in particular.... something along the line of "...Children..." and smiles while getting his horse ready for the return trip

[Jenara]

"If he touches, he has me to answer to." Angel says with a stern frown, "Watch Eldon, and watch out for yourself, who knows what could come through that..." With that she turns and collects her gear.

[Stik]

Octo looks at the group assembled and, after a moment's thought, says: "Barber - I want you to take Boomer in there, too. I want to know how to take this thing apart if need be.
"Well, go, if you are going."

"Boomer?! You have a demolitions man!? Oh, I have GOT to meet him!" Bastian exclaims with far too much enthusiasm for what the simple comment warrants.

[Stik]

"The Legions have men for everything, priest. Boomer was a combat engineer and artillerist."

[Ismaels-Legacy]

"Artillery!? Do you have a Scorpion? I want to fire a Scorpion!" Bastian suddenly realizes that he is not, in fact, 12 years old, looks around sheepishly, and composes himself. "Umm...Let's collect Boomer and proceed to the cave?"

[Stik]

It takes a bit of looking to find Boomer. When he is found, he is not in the camp, but halfway up the slope, looking at the stones. It comes as a slight surprise that he is a dwarf - few are found in the legions. But despite his race, he looks much like all the other retired legionaires - hair cropped close, beard cropped as well, and in fairly good physical shape.

"Let me guess," he says, "We are going inside, yes?"

Gnaeus steps forward to address the dwarf, his normal haughty imperiousness tempered by proper legion etiquette. He calls out neutrally, "I am called Magus. The priest and I have been given permission to study this so-called portal. What is it exactly you're doing here amid the rubble instead of in the legion camp?" He tries to make the question sound like a curiosity instead of a demand and mostly succeeds. The black shape of Pounceous Servilius stalks through the nearby underbrush.

[Stik]

[OOC] There's no real rubble out here. It is a wooded hillside, with occasional bits of stone showing. The only rubble was inside the cave.. [/OOC]

"The hillside here looked odd from below. Perhaps an ancient landslide caused this shape. Perhaps not. Let us go. Have you a lamp or must we get one?"

Magus thinks for a moment before concluding his candles would be of little use next to a proper lamp or torch, signaling his thoughts by sharply nodding in the direction of camp. A thin puff of glittering motes dislodge from his head and hair from the gesture. "We must needs fetch one, if Bastian is without. I've dedicated this day's magics to discerning the nature of this dimensional doorway. You have not come across any pyrite, have you? It is a vital reagent in my studies."
