Hooks, mattress.... Brewing. ? She muses in her head, this must be where she must be kept... looking up some what worried that no one joined her she moves towards the bed "Erika?" She asks in a low voice, "We have come to help.."

When she gets no answer she turns towards the small wall, carefully stepping over the wall, her keen eyes looking for something on the ground.

There is no one on the bed, so Eloise turns away from it after a glance.

Approaching the low wall, she notices that the wall delimits a channel that guides water to the wall, where it gurgles outside. This must be the source of the small stream in the lower/outer courtyard. Directly in front of her is another brick wall, as high as the ceiling, with a gap about as wide as the steps she is standing on. This gap is closed to what for her is shoulder height with sturdy boards which are in good repair. Some more boards are kept ready on hooks affxed to the wall. The board that is on the height of her tighs has an opening with a spout in it, it would be easy to fill one of the barrels in the room by just putting it under the spout.

"Why would one take so much trouble to brew beer?" she muses, "Matthias?" She calls up, "Do you know much of brewing?"

So she had a bed, chains, a brewery.. obviously the place they kept the girl. "There is a bed down here."

Kneeling, Matthias sticks his head through the trapdoor hole in order to address her more quietly but ends up just sticking his head into a plume of smoke and reels back sputtering and coughing, rubbing his eyes with his hands. "Emh! Nuh... Ehem! Nay miss. A little of wild wines but beer is beyond me.

(OOC: There are no chains, just rings chains could be fixed to!

And background info for all of you: in these lands, you need a license to brew and sell beer publicly. This is meant mostly to control the amount of alcohol that is consumed. But there has been little quality contol of late, and so many beers sold in pubs is of poor quality, so good beer can be sold on the black market for very hight prices, and often the authorities can be bribed with a barrel for them...)

"I get it now." Grinning she nods and heads to the steps. "I think someone is making a pretty packet from this! They kidnap a brewer, make beer here.. sell it.. I bet they even sell it to the inn!"

Thelma seems to agree, "That would make sense, and it would mean that she would have to be relatively unharmed." She tells the group with concern on her face, "Which local is behind it, though?"

Cleaning his face on the sleeve of his robe, Matthias faces the rest of the group somewhat sheepishly. "What if I were to proposition that I might make these fiendish fermenters come running to us in a hurry? We would catch them outnumbered and off their guard as they stepped through this very doorway!" He gestures to the door which opens onto the inner courtyard (I hope I'm getting this right). "Or, well, at least head directly for the trap-door."

Yes, Matthias is right, all the four doors of the buildings open on the courtyard. Two are facing more or less towards the building where the malt is currently being made, as Saul smelled.

"I had the same idea!" Eloise says in shock, appearing through the hatch.

"There has to be more to it than black market beer. Too many things do not add up.

"Plenty of people know how to make beer. Why kidnap a woman just for that? And if they really needed her recipe, why not buy it from her? A woman soon to be wedded could surely use some coin.

"And if these men were villainous enough to kidnap her just to their brew beer, and assault her betrothed, why leave him alive and then stay around? Surely they must fear reprisals from his family and friends.

"Sad to say, but the only way this makes sense is if the culprits are powerful enough not to fear the consequences of their actions."
"No matter where you go, there you are."

Rising to the top of the stairs Eliose watches to see what the group will do. "What now?" she asks, hands on her hips.

Thelma says in a clear voice, "Let's go through the door and find out." She turns to head towards the trap door.

I just post again what I wrote when Eloise explored what lies behind/under the trapdoor:
Breila wrote:The makeshift torch indeed gives up almost more smoke than light, but it suffices to let Eloise see that there is a quite comfortable wooden stair, parallel to the wall, that leads into the cellar. It ends a few feet in front of a brick wall. When she goes down, she sees that the wall would only reach to her waist, and the sound of water is coming from behind it. To her left stretches a room that is at least as deep as the building above it, probably deeper.
The running water creates a slight draught that makes the torch flame flicker.
The room has a triple barrel vault ceiling, which means there are two rows of three columns each between the wall she now has her back to and the far wall, and a fourth column is part of the low brick wall. It is crammed with barrels, both open and closed. Next to the low brick wall, and not far from where she stands at the foot of the stairs, is a primitive fireplace with a tripod on which a large kettle sits. At the angle between the brick wall and the far wall of the room is a large open vat. Between those two are stone steps that should make it easy to cross the brick wall. When she turns around, she sees a straw mattress under the stairs, about the only place where there is room for it. Along the wall of the room opposite the low brick wall, several rings are set into the wall at her hip height.

What do you do next?

"Come on. It is time we met our squatters. And let us remain cordial for the moment. These men may be here with permission." Christopher gathers the others around and heads out toward the courtyard and the building where the fire is lit.
"No matter where you go, there you are."
