WotL OOC Thread

This 2E Dragonlance game is set in the city of Haven, during the War of the Lance. Haven is a city undergoing great upheaval. First massive numbers of refugees pour in, then the city is conquered by a draconic army. Can our heroes survive under this dark occupation?

Kobold caves are just a fantasy

I wish I could Knee her, but unfortunately Kyne doesn't know those sorts of words of power. Int 9 isn't particularly dumb in AD&D but it's not brilliant, either.

Hey, so...it's now been a whole week since this game started. How's everyone doing? Everyone having fun? Any initial feedback so far?

It's been quite the juggle so far, but I'm really having fun rolling up random encounters, then trying to fit them into what's going on. Whenever possible, I try to work some kind of moral dilemma into these encounters, mostly just to see how your characters react to them. The kender and the old lady, the guard chasing the thief, the charismatic cultist, and so on.

Although it's been a week in real life, only about 15 minutes or so have passed in game time. Nobody's actually run into each other yet, but it's a big city. Should be interesting to see what happens next!

I'm quite enjoying reading all of the separate stories, and even though Coroccoco is in a relatively tame position right now one can still get the taste of adventure from the others, or see the different settings like inside of the Armory.

I was wondering whether you all were only reading your sections or reading all of them.

Although it's much more work for me to have started you all in different areas, as opposed to sticking you all in the same inn or something, it really opens up the world and showcases the problems in Haven from different angles. We are shown the perspective of visitors, residents, a Holy Guard and so on.

I usually ready my section first, then reply to it, then read the other stories.

As for the split -> everyone's welcome to join in my story if they want ^^ I'm getting close to just walking onto the street and hopefully bumping into other people's characters to ask them for help.

I wasn't reading the others' stories until recently, but I can definitely appreciate the diversity of situations.

I love reading what's going on in the other character's stories and I'm having a blast. The moral dilemmas are interesting to think about.

Sorry I was very busy, so much in fact that I forgot to post I was going to be absent for half a week (and getting the message to the only person I can reach without internet didn't work out apparently). So I have just barely kept up with my own thread. But things will be better next week.

I'm glad everyone is enjoying themselves then.

It's interesting to me, that such an opening would not have been possible in a real-time game. I've always been adept at splitting up the party and juggling them all equally, but even I'd be hard-pressed to keep this up in real-time.

The most difficult aspect, so far, are the temporal mechanics. I have to make sure everyone consumes roughly the same amount of time, to avoid paradoxes.

For instance, Kynaston decided to walk to the Steel Tankard Tavern, which is a good half hour walk from his house. If I just skipped over it, and said, "Thirty minutes later, he arrives" then he'd be half an hour ahead of everyone else. So instead, I bumped him forward only five minutes and had him run into the kender and the old woman, which helped occupy him long enough for me to find ways to bump everyone else five minutes forward, too.

It's complicated, but I enjoy the challenge.

Oh, and that's okay, Breila. I just assumed that like mgbevan, you were busy with getting your kids back to school.

I'd love to go explore a mine with you! :] however, Coroccoco's got to get out of her current situation first.

Actually, I do have a question for you Jaded. Do you always write the DM post from top to bottom or do you jump here and there?

For this particular game, I have a word document on my desktop I use. Whenever I read a new post, I write a reply to it right away (or at soon enough) in the document. Then when everyone responds or the day ends (whichever comes first), I just copy and paste the whole thing into a post.

The trick to role playing Haahqae, and why it's interesting/fun right now is trying to make him sound intelligent, but not very wise, but at the same time not clumsy, nor excessively charming, nor entirely unlikeable. Thus is how the stats were rolled.

And then there is what I want him to do, as well as juggling his motivations and balancing in character knowledge with meta gaming (like trying to get the party together, or at least allow such to happen).

All fun/interesting stuff.

"Can Weerschaal heal my sick mother?" one asks. "Will Weerschaal stop the war?" asks another.
Ehhhh, got to admit I did not prepare for this utterly foreseeable outcome ^^;

Very interesting.

Yeah, between the Belzor cult and now the Seekers, the people of Haven are somewhat used to being burned, and are always on the outlook for 'real miracles.'
