CH. 7: Voyage of the Bullring

[Breila]

"I never wanted to learn fighting spells" Ouragana confesses. "In my childhood, I saw to many arguments turn into fights and injuries that were later much regretted. I used to have quite a nasty temper, so I didn't trust myself with magical fighting power. Also, I thought that on the vessels where I sailed, there would be fighters enough. Only now did I realise that I am far too vulnerable to survive without them."

After a pause, she continues. "Perhaps there are spells that incapacitate the enemy without doing permanent damage? I might find them easier to master." She looks at Thaddeus pleadingly.

[Jenara]

"We all have stories that surround us. Her sister is an interesting one." Rubbing her head she looks up to the sky. "How long has she been captain? And I have heard that pirates sail these seas.. Have you encountered any?"

[JadedDM]

Thaddeus' Quarters

The navigator thinks to himself a moment. "Well, there may be something. A slumbering spell. It would put to sleep targets as long as they are fairly weak and clustered together; thus neutralizing them without killing them. Would you be interested in it?" he asks.

The Rigging

"Interesting? Yes, and many other things she is, too," Javos says with a grin. "Sierra has been a captain for fifteen years now, although she only acquired the Bullring in the last five. And as for pirates," he chuckles. "No pirate would dare be bold enough to attack a vessel this size, regardless of the booty within. It'd be suicide."

[Jenara]

"Then I have nothing to worry about then do I?" She says with a giggle, "Do you know what cargo we are to deliver?"

[Breila]

"Yes, that sounds very good!" Ouragana exclaims. "I had a situation recently where that would have been a lot of help!"

(Invisible castle is down for me)

"Just because I've taken charge on the matter doesn't mean I don't need help along the way," Jocelyn admits. "I still....struggle," she says.

The Rigging

Javos shakes his head. "Only the officers know that. I've heard rumors and hearsay that it's quite valuable, though; which is why the captain was willing to take on more crew, just to be safe."

Thaddeus' Quarters

"Well, then, let's see," Thaddeus says, flipping through the book. "I haven't used it in a long while; and only then, just to slip away from awkward social situations. Ah, here it is," he says, indicating the page where the spell begins.

As she suspected, learning a non-lethal spell was much easier for Ouragana. Within the hour, she's unlocked the more difficult equations of the spell and added them to her own spellbook for future use.

The Galley

"You're a top rate healer," Noah states. "Your magic power may even exceed my own. There's no denying that; you have a gift. My concern has always been the teachings, though. That's why I felt you weren't ready yet; the virtues of Octhanus--mercy, love and compassion--are more than just words to recite. They have to be a part of you," he says, finishing a third potato.

"Hey," Killia interjects. "I don't mind you yapping, but you still need to work," she says, pointing to Jocelyn's lack of progress. The acolyte hasn't peeled a single potato yet.

Ouragana makes a learn spell check [70] (1d100): 19, pass. She learns the Sleep spell.

Jocelyn starts peeling the potatoes. "I'm not going to deny the fact that I have issues with the virtues, but I think I am getting better. I mean, I managed to get Brock out of his room after the death of his daughter. That was showing compassion, right?"

[Breila]

"Thank you very much!" Ouragana says enthusiastically after compying the spell and handing back the book to Thaddeus. "This will be a lot of help." Her eyes shine brightly, and it looks like she has to restrain herself not to hug the other mage.
"Studying always makes me hungry and thirsty, what is it with food and drink on board? Are there regular meals only, or do we have access to food and drink at other times, too?" she asks.

[Nuke]

Val stands around a while before asking "What are your orders?"

The Galley

"It was," Noah admits. "He told me about that; and it will look good on your review. But what about the other two virtues?"

Thaddeus' Quarters

"Well, it was the least I could do after you helped me get started on this orb," Thaddeus says as he accepts the book and places it back on the shelf. "I made more progress while you were studying. I'm hoping to have it open soon." He turns back to her. "As for food, meals are in the morning and the evening, in the galley. We only eat and drink at those times; if anyone was allowed to take food and water whenever they pleased, it would be too difficult to keep track of it all and we might run out at sea. Everything is strictly rationed; as they are on most ships."

The Bombard Deck

"Ehh," begins Tomori. "Captain wants you to assist me in training the marines. So we'll start with that, if you think you can handle it."

[Jenara]

"Perhaps she will tell us over dinner, I am supposed to dine with her this evening, with my friends." Arei replies after standing silent for a moment, arching her back she looks up, then back at him. "You are not one of her officers then?"

[Nuke]

"If you need help with a trident or bow, or axe even. I will show what I know." Val say bluntly.

[Breila]

"Well the ships I've been on so far were smaller" Ouragana says. "And they didn't go very far. So it was possible to take some extra dried fruit for the mages." She sighs, then goes to the table with the orb, looking at it closely with her hands clasped behind her back.

[HorizonsDream]

"When it comes to love, I'm at a loss," Jocelyn admits as tosses a peeled potato into an empty bucket. "And mercy...well those talking chicken looking things we didn't kill," she says. "We tried to understand them rather than just outright killing them like we were hired to do."
