I saw Pat Benatar about five years ago at a free concert in Brooklyn. It was a double bill with Debbie Harry. Amazing show! Pat Benatar sounded just like she did thirty years ago, and Debbie Harry, despite seeming completely incoherent when speaking, sang pretty much flawlessly.

I don't listen to modern "music". I'm just to confident in my own preferences at this point in my life: I just don't care what is popular today. If I like it- then I embrace it. If it imho I say so. I suppose the "Old and Bold" part of adulthood has kicked in. Hendrix is timeless.

There are a few promising artists out now, but you have to dig through a lot of garbage to find them.

Believe it or not (because it's such a departure from my usual taste) I've been listening to Haim lately. Yes, Haim. Three sisters from LA who do what is pretty much girl-pop, but with a solid grounding in rock and decent songwriting. What really sold me on the band, though, was seeing them on SNL. Unlike many of todays entertainers, the Haim sisters looked to be having a really good time on stage, and gave the impression that they were thrilled to be there.

I'm also impressed with Bruno Mars. If only this guy could dance he might have a shot at filling the void left by Michael Jackson.

Someone brought up Steely Dan earlier in this thread. I have been listening to a lot of Steely Dan since installing Spotify on my PC. While they are indeed a classic band, I don't know that they area exactly classic rock. They lean more towards jazz-pop or jazz-rock than rock.
To me, there's something that stands out about Steely Dan and sets them apart from other bands. On a typical album most bands will have one or two great tracks (the ones that will get a lot of airplay and become classics), plus a few that are okay, and one or two dogs that you can kind of ignore/dismiss. On a Steely Dan album even the tracks that aren't big hits are solid, well-crafted songs that are worth listening to, and there aren't any real dogs. And there is a lot that goes into every song they write. You can sit back and listen to these upbeat melodies and appreciate the song and feel good hearing it, then you can actually listen closely to the lyrics and get an entirely different experience. Their lyrics are often quite deep and cleverly written, and sometimes contain some dark stuff that you wouldn't expect to be there. I like music with intelligence behind it, and Steely Dan fills that bill.

Edge of Seventeen was always a favorite of mine. Brings back a memory of when I worked in a restaurant in the mid 80s. Late nights the bartender would pop in a mix tape that had that song on it. When you heard that song, you knew last call was coming soon.

I saw Heart at a triple bill outdoor concert (with Cheap Trick and Journey) a few years back. The show was delayed about 45 minutes due to rain, and I was standing in the shelter of the main building looking out at the plaza between there and the concession stand waiting for the rain to let up so I could dash over for some food, and saw this woman standing there, looking out at the rain, who looked a bit familiar - late 50s, brunette, kind of heavyset - but I could not place her. I was thinking she might be one of my mom's friends, or someone from the neighborhood. Heart took the stage about 20 minutes later and I realized the lady I almost recognized was Ann Wilson. She was just walking around amidst the crowd, no escort, no nothing.

Now, changing gears completely I give you Thin Lizzie - Jailbreak - a little more raw and less produced than some of the music posted here, but what it lacks in subtlety it makes up for in power and attitude.
