Holidays in game and Holy days??

Post by garhkal »

When you set up your home made realm, say basing it off an earth like calendar.. How many holidays do you put in? One a month? One every three months? Randomly picked?
What of holy days for each of your priest hoods? Do you make there be many, or just a few. Do clerics of those faiths (inc pc ones) have any special requirements ON those holy days?

I've gone with 12 months of 30 days each, just because it's easiest for players (and the DM!) to relate to. It's easier with an even 30 days per month, every month. I've toyed with making the weeks consist of 10 days (a "tenday's" ride would be one week, or ten days), so there are 3 weeks in a month, but it's hard to print alternative calendars.

I definitely have holidays scattered throughout the year. Xmas-like festivals, the Day of the Dead, etc. And of course, national or cultural celebrations, church holidays (holy days), etc. There's the spring festivals, the fall harvest (Thanksgiving-like), there are ceremonies around eclipses, etc. It really makes the world real when there are so many special occasions filling the calendar.

A day of the dead i can see, same with harvest fest, new planting season start. Maybe one for 'country founding', and another celebrating the b;day of the leader. One for summer and winter solstice, new year (but not xmas as that's an earth creation).
But where i draw a blank is for the gods days..

I've got the following human focused gods and their areas of focus(Portfolios)

Balkao - Elements. Worshiped mostly by miners
Halea - goddess of love, fertility and good luck. Also god of trades and bargains.
Laranni - Chivalry, anc competitions of strength (i think a once a year 4-5 day event for feats of strength is good for her)
Peoni - Healing, peace, farmers. (possibly a harvest start/end, and maybe one or two for new season plantings??)
Sarajin - god of battle lust and competition of combat.
Save-K-nor - god of knowledge and seekers of wisdom. (Also god of sages)

And lastly Vorka - Travelers, pathfinders and archers.

Two of them i can easily see coming up with days for (Laranni, setting up a once a year competition, say lasting 3-4 days, early May i am thinking).
And Peoni, one for harvest fest, another for new season of planting (Seasons beginnings), but what for peace/fertility?

Here is what I've done so far for my new realm

http://www.padnd.com/arkuth/calendar_days.php

just scroll down a bit. Those holidays are just for the core human kingdoms for one religion. Of course, each area will celebrate their own holidays :)
