Re: ** Part I: Fire and Ash **
Garosh goes up to the already injured, bleeding profusely knight and struck him hard on the side of the head with the flat of his long two handed sword, bashing the proud combatant and sending him crashing into a spiked pit, effectively killing him, 'twice the pride, double the fall' he said.
Valtor
said 'stand back' and he made a clawed clutching motion with his right hand, 'xuldagar mortis nyugoth' an ice storm descended pummeling the caravan and it's immediate area with crashing spheres of elemental ice.
A moment later, the elven mage casts another spell and the wall of blazing flame lowered like a curtain and parted, revealing the caravan beyond. There were many fallen bodies now, either dispatched by traps, magic, arrow, or something else entirely. All the bodies appeared to be present except for the surface elf and the acrobatic warrior woman up in the trees.
The partially blinded drow elf raised his hands as Nym leveled his one handed crossbow at him, the drow smirked and his eye appeared to have been restored somehow. Because of his smirk, Nym quick drew his sword and leveled it at the impertinent dark elf's chin 'should add a different sort of smile to this one's face' he added.
Karlene looked around and couldn't see the glaive throwing tree-swinging barbarian woman anywhere, she disappeared using her chainwhip to swing tree to tree and leaping like a monkey effortlessly.
Right now, there's a drow elf prisoner (ironically being held by fellow drow elf), the surface elf is unaccounted for, the rest of the decoy caravan's defenders are all dead, minus three mercs who are upside down hanging by their ankles.
A fourth merc was suspended by the neck and died of strangulation.
Garosh said 'that woman was a Nyriddian, they're tough, and they have tactical advantage in forests. Your spells only sting, priestess' he sheathed his bastard sword, 'they're very formidable'

Karlane nods in acknowledgement. "It is over. Good work,"" she smiles at Sarancen. "The elf went east. It is worthwhile to pursue him?"
She continues, "Strip down what is left, please. We take anything magical and of value. Includes documents and maps. We've got 15 minutes. Or do I need to do this myself? Be aware for the Nyriddian or elf. Best work in threes."
Turning to the captive, she says, "Search him. Twice. Then bind him." Meanwhile she addresses the dark elf, "You have been more fortunate than some it would seem. Let's try and make that continue: tell me two things that I don't know that will be of use to me."
When that conversation concludes, she goes to the fallen decoy train and casts Detect Magic, noting anything that shows as magical, pointing and calling out any portable items that have been missed.

Re: ** Part I: Fire and Ash **
Dark Elf: laughed, 'you're going to die a slow, drawn out death. Second, there's nothing you can do to avoid your impending doom' Azonia pats him down and discovers some usual weapons, shortsword and dagger, hand xbow, drow elf hauberk.
Sarancen: 'leave them be, these woods are inhospitable'
Karlene casts detect magic, her eyes tingle and glow white briefly. She finds a crlate full of swords of various types each glowing with a pale blue dweomer of power.
Zym said 'just a common footsoldier, this one. Lowborn grunt, surface spy'

Re: ** Part I: Fire and Ash **
With some of the fog and darkness that had been obscuring the battlefield lifting Whisper spotted a man he knew as storm. "Friend Storm, those you travel with would betray you! " Whisper called out a moment before casting CHARM PERSON on the knight, if the man wasn't a friend he might soon be. does the pc know why the beetle made an odd noise? Also please retcon the action as I think one or more of my turns were skipped
Re: ** Part I: Fire and Ash **
By the time Whisper was able to, Azonia and the traps laid had already finished the knight off, and he was now very dead.
The scarab makes the buzzing sound when flying, normal thing actually.
Valtor: 'that went better than I expected'
Sarancen: 'Aye, the black guard are skilled with ambush' he said.
Valtor says to Karlene 'don't touch those weapons you detected dweomers, they're not enchanted. They don't come in large quantity, and why would they in a decoy caravan? I believe they might be cursed' then he turned to Whisper, 'how did you know that mans name?' indicating the knight, and he arched a brow and eyed Whisper with a look of suspicion.
Sarancen also said 'yeah, how is that possible? Maybe he's working with our enemies!'
Azonia said 'cease at once, he's a fool we all know, thinks he knows everyone'

Did Karlane's magical inspection, intended primarily to center on the more apparently more powerful of the vanquished foes, reveal anything beyond the crate of stuff?
Anything from the prisoner glow? Or anything else not yet removed from him i.e. missed?
If any of the more apparently powerful vanquished foes are lingering down a pit they can be fished out using a rope and grappling hook (which Karlane has).
======
Detect Magic is 10 minutes according to 1st Ed PHB..
When she's ready, can Karlane cancel the teleportal in the assassins' base and call it to the decoy ambush site?
Objective is to identify (not the Identify spell) anything magical (that we want to take so not the crate) or useful (keys, maps, orders) or valuable, gems, rings, jewery, high end currency and move off through a portal. Fate of drow prisoner to be decided in the forthcoming minutes.

Detect magic:
Female cleric: : scourge cat-o-nine tails whip * you can already tell this is a Loviatar agony whip, and it exudes an evil aura. When Karlene touches the weapon she sees it being put to use on the backs of slaves, children, and sacrificed people and the weapon absorbs their suffering which fuels the power of the weapon. Destroying it might yield an incredible blessing.
Knight:: girdle with Telemvor heraldic insignia woven into it-*
female fighter (looks like Azonia)-quiver of 40 arrows. When Karlene peers down at her closer she recognizes the woman as the ranger Kessa she had previously met. When you touch her you see a vision of her meeting up with this caravan as she came to their defense against some orcs who had attacked them.
Drow: : he has a piece of blank parchment that is glowing brightly, he gets a murderous look in his eyes when you take it from him.

Re: ** Part I: Fire and Ash **
Catching Azonia's eye, Karlane says, "Would you use magical arrows?"
==> If the response is an affirmative, she splits the arrows and gives Azonia 20 of them, retaining the others for Idrys.
She announces, "This is an evil thing," and drops the whip into a decent sized fire, asking for one to be made up if none suitable remains. (One way of another she makes sure the whip is destroyed by fire and offers a silent Prayer of Dedication to Lor.
After putting the girdle away in her sack of 'stuff to be identified', Karlane says to the group, "I have no interest in this slayer of children. You may decide it's fate," indicating the drow prisoner.
Leaving them to deal with the drow, she examines the magical parchment and looks for clues. (She has a Read Magic available if required.)
After a few minutes she checks that the whip is destroyed beyond repair or use, carefully adding some more oil if necessary and then looks to see the fate of the drow. (If this is still undecided, she says simply, "He dies to save the future children," and does the deed herself.
Finally, she says to the group, "Did you find anything useful or valuable?"
The priestess cancels the portal in the assassins' base and creates one in their current location, thence hurrying everyone through to the ambush site of the actual weapons' caravan. "Whisper, where are you? Come on now, we won't be coming back this way."

Re: ** Part I: Fire and Ash **
"How did I know that man's name? Same as I knew of Azonia's, Turd's, yours, Zym went by another name but its the same soul. A trick of the mind and its memories, nothing more. It matters not with the man's death. Besides from my experience a confused subject is easier to ensorcel with charm magics." Whisper offered up as his explanation to the questions posed to him, he squinted his eyes and pinched the bridge of his nose with his hand to alleviate the mounting pressure behind his eyes. The reek of burning flesh and hair was beginning to make his head hurt, wait those smells came from him! He will spend some time with the remains of Storm and offer prayers for the man's soul.
[OoC] Thanks on the scarab info, I thought it needed some WD-40. Did I lose any equipment in the round with the hell hound? I'm pretty flamable and so is most of the PC's stuff I've noticed as I adjusted my character sheet with damage and spent spells. I'm guessing the spell stick thing the PC has is sort of magical and thus a little tougher to destroy then just a wooden stick but correct me if I'm wrong.

Re: ** Part I: Fire and Ash **
Azonia took the offered arrows, 'I'll gladly take those my thanks'
Karlene tries burning the whip, but only blackens it. After some moments the black burn marks faded.
Drow prisoner: why execute me? Wasn't my whip it was that pale faced priestess you killed, she was a servant of Loviatar. I was but her slave she bought from other drow. I'm simply a low born thief. Kill me and the secrets I have die with me, and with that a great treasure nobody will ever discover' he added.
As Karlene examined the scroll she noticed a map drew on its surface of her surroundings, including names of nearby settlements.
The dark elf said 'the scroll of mapping, how I escaped to the surface' he explained.
Valtor looked at Whisper and said 'your explanation only begs more questions, doesn't squash them like a bug. You know us because we liberated you from captivity under Scarn's ownership. And suddenly you think you know an enemy, so imagine the suspicion that itself generates, mage. A man who would have sliced you into pieces. You would do well to wake the hell up and sober up, less you wish to earn my wrath' he says acidly.

Re: ** Part I: Fire and Ash **
"Keeping guard, people? As well as someone watching the captive?" Karlane checks.
"I've already told you that you're more fortunate than some; you're still alive," the priestess addresses the prisoner while she tries hitting the Loviatar agony whip with her mace. "I've offered once for that to continue and you spurned the offer. Final time of asking: tell me two true things that I don't know that will be of use to me and that I will value. The cost of spurning the first offer is that you will additionally tell me of the 'scroll of mapping', how it is used, its limitations and how to access information acquired from where it has been before."
When the prisoner has finished talking she tries once more with the group, "If you please, have any of you found anything useful or valuable from the fallen or the 'caravan'? A simple 'no' is sufficient otherwise." She smiles to try and take any unintended harsh edge off the comment. "And I'm not intending to hoard things, merely to Identify the magical stuff before distributing it to those best suited for the things. Or are any of you able to Identify the function of magical things in some arcane or other manner? Whisper, can your marvelous bug do that?"
After pausing for any replies, and looking round to see if any other replies are forthcoming, Karlane says quietly, "Whisper, she has a point. And you do need to stiffen your backbone and focus on this place and time. Take the magical glaive and use it next time. You're skilled with it and the thing won't cut you in half if you don't catch it; just means you lose it. Azonia, he will be needed. I have no idea how, but that' will be revealed in time."
If the mace doesn't destroy the whip's essence, the Lorian asks, "Anyone know how to destroy one of these things?"

Re: ** Part I: Fire and Ash **
When Karlene strikes the cat-o-nine tails whip with her mace, it is merely charred by the white fire, but undamaged otherwise.
Azonia is guarding the prisoner, Sarancen is inspecting the decoy caravan, Zym said 'those foul whips can only be destroyed, priestess if you place them in holy oil, and ignite it with fire from wood of a tree grown on consecrated ground, while casting a spell sanctification upon it. Those weapons are forged in the abyss'.
Drow Elf: laughed, 'oh? Very well. This group you ambushed, they're rather tough, and you'd better burn all the bodies or some of these might be raised. They've died before! We're all expendable. Trust me when I tell you this, your threats mean so little right now they almost make me laugh uncontrollably. Some strange man enlisted them to try and lure you into their clutches. He paid them with fools gold, but by the time the treachery was discovered it was too late. He looked sadly upon the Elsmyrian 'a pity she died, she was one of the better ones' he commented, then: 'there is a special dungeon, created aeons ago by your detestable order called the dungeon of seven parts. Each dungeon is one of seven, and can only be accessed by an ancient relic, something like an Ioun stone but rarer. Each dungeon is connected to another, random one. For example, one might have a gateway to number seven, and so forth. Ah, so you don't actually know about it do you?' he asked in mockery, 'fancy that a renegade drow knows something a Lor priestess does not'
Assassins guild portal is collapsed, new one created.

@Valtor - "Quite right you are Valtor, after all for you our meeting has actually just happened not that long ago. Might I bother you for a piece of salt water taffy or a lemon doodle drop? I seem to recall you keeping a collection of candies in your robe's upper left inner chest pocket when we traveled together in another time and place." Whisper waits patiently for a piece of candy from his semi-familiar peer, trying to appear more sober. Afterall, one does not forget where good candy can be had!
@upside down guards & the drow prisoner if needed - Whisper pulls each of their heads backwards and slits their throats quickly with Applebane. There's no need to leave loose ends.
@corpses - are any Whisper's size and fairly clean clothed? He's been through a lot and the run of the mill clothes he has must be gruesomely stained. While the scarab has mending to fix tears and slashes to his clothes Whisper's almost died two or three times and just got torched so he's in need of a clothing change I would guess.
@Storm's body - does he get any sensations or memories of the man while spending time with and praying over the body?
@scarab - 'Would you have a look over the wagons for hidden panels and traps?' Whisper requests of the scarab after it had returned to his side from cutting the various wagon axles.

Re: ** Part I: Fire and Ash **
The big bellied elf said 'afraid you're wrong about that one my friend, I'm not one to keep candy in supply on my person, I'm sweet enough as it is. You'll only find the ingredients for true alchemy, which is my craft' he said, eying you wearily 'go about your business and search this place with that little dwemer roach you keep as your familiar'
The scarab found a second wagon behind the first, it was loaded with barrels full of wildfire, 10 in all, 4 were damaged in Sarancen's log trap.
Whisper found a good set of clothes in a shattered crate, they were fanciful and exquisitely tailored out of some durable but soft material.
Azonia said to Sarancen 'I'd give real good coin if those two learned to cease bickering like an old married couple' she said. As Whisper prepared to slit some throats of the mercs, the Elsmyrian placed a restraining hand on his shoulder 'no need for any of that. They're just sellswords with families to feed, their loyalties weren't with these others just the coin that they provided. Set them free, and give them some food and a bit of coin. A little mercy stretches over a multitude of wrongs'

Re: ** Part I: Fire and Ash **
@Karlane - "Neither my familiar or myself are currently capable of determining precisely the enchantments imbued upon items and weapons. I am willing to alleviate some of your burden with those efforts, could you transcribe me a copy of the spell so that I may commit it to memory and aid you in that task? As for the glaive, I believe Garosh is far more adept at throwing blades about then I. If there is no one else who has the ability to carry or use the weapon I shall bear its burden until the next town or a merchant crosses our path." Whisper attempts to politely refuse the weapon that would see no use from him while trying to be more of an asset to the team by doing something he might be good at.
@Valtor - Whisper is visibly crestfallen at the lack of candy. It wasn't just the lack of candy, the fact that his memory was still so hopelessly jumbled added a lot to his despair. 'Gosh, my stupid memory is just nagging at me with bits and pieces about this elf and none of them seem to be quite right!' He thought to himself before speaking. "Alchemy huh? I've had bits of memories of you blasting and turning your enemies to ash with fireballs that rivaled the fury of the largest red dragons. Still you weaved some impressive spell work during the ambush Valtor, yours is not a wrath I would willingly face." 'When we get to a town I'm going to buy him ten pounds of candy, well maybe fifteen.' Whisper plotted and then adjusted his estimate as he recalled the paunch that Valtor sported with pride.
@Azonia - Whisper waited expressionlessly to draw his dagger deeply across the man's throat whose head he was holding. "The black guard hunts this group do they not? If these fools would sell their sword arm to this excursion they would sell the word of who ambushed them for even less. Scarab, enlarge the pit where Storm's body lies. Let us fill the hole with these corpses and destroy the remains with some of the wildfire before we are off." .
[Ooc] I have no idea what wildfire is but I'm guessing its combustible and can be used to burn the corpses? Also I'm picturing this Valtor as a skinny elf guy with a big ol' beer gut in my mind, I think the other one was more all around "husky". Is that about right?
