WotL OOC Thread

This 2E Dragonlance game is set in the city of Haven, during the War of the Lance. Haven is a city undergoing great upheaval. First massive numbers of refugees pour in, then the city is conquered by a draconic army. Can our heroes survive under this dark occupation?

That's fine. We'll just have your character sleep in late or something, and be introduced whenever you are ready.

Gregeddin's age has recently turned 18.
Revising the costs of clothing and the zheng, he has 5 Steel and 8 Silver left in his belt pouch.

Gregeddin is staying at his family residence located just North of the main gate, which is little more than a rectangular box with 3 beds and a minimal kitchen area. No dividers for privacy or other luxuries of life that a client would expect, but this place is pretty much only used when his parents are working in the city or are not finding work. The inns outside the city would traditionally be generous enough to comp us a room as part of payment. Gregeddin expects his parents to have already gone by the time he wakes up, fulfilling a contract at the Seven Centaurs means they've probably gone down early to help the keeper with livery or something - part of keeping up that good reputation it seems.

Sounds great. All I really need now is a short blurb about his personality, and he'll be ready to go.

Elf Ranger/cleric, from Balinost, (right next to Qualinost...)

If the rolls are good enough...

STR 16, DEX 14, CON 16, INT 8, WIS 12, CHA 10

Damn! One point off the required wisdom for ranger!

Personality
More often than not, one would find Gregeddin with a smile on, doing his best to conceal his teeth out of politeness, after he has thought of some witty twist of another's words or faux pas in conduct which has amused him. He enjoys chatting, joking and playing music inherently, lacking the real desire to be the centre of attention captivating those around him with grand tales or exuberant performances. And playing tricks on others, if the mood so strikes him, not out of wickedness, but to indulge in that special kind of humour leaving him gasping between laughs and in watery eyed hysteria at the sight or spectacle someone has unfortunately be tricked into.

Not sure if this applies to class in addition to race:

No Racial/Class Restrictions - Any race may take any class in my games. A dwarf can be a paladin, an elf can be a bard, a gnome can be a ranger, etc.
No Racial Ability Minimums or Maximums - I don't bother with these at all (e.g., not being able to play a dwarf unless your STR is 8 or higher). Never saw the point to it.

I'm pretty sure it was 4d6 best 3 undesignated, so you probably can play ranger. I had a 17 that was in the int slot obstensibly and he said I qualified for paladin.

You're better off asking Jaded but I think you'll be allowed to play ranger (multiclass ranger, i just don't know.)

STR 12
DEX 9
CON 12
INT 10
WIS 14
CHA 13 (For hobbo -1)

Are Coroccoco's final stats. As I mentioned in her brief bio she'll be sleeping under a hedge in Haven. Probably in a wooded park-ish area should there be one.

I had thought to begin roleplaying when Khush presents himself at a gate of Haven, so his last night would have been on his straw mat, below his cloak, somewhere in the brush at the roadside... he would arrive at the gate around mid-day. Is that OK?
There's more to me than meets the eye...

mgbevan's character is now officially ready to go!

Well, you could always make her middle aged. At 175 years old, she'd get a +1 to INT and WIS. She'd also get a -1 to STR and CON. Once you include her elven ability adjustments (+1 DEX, -1 CON), her stats would be STR 15, DEX 15, CON 14, INT 8, WIS 13, CHA 10, so she'd still qualify as a ranger. (Plus, even a middle-aged elf still looks pretty young, by human standards.)

Although to be honest, I wouldn't really quibble over a single point. If you were nowhere close to having high enough stats, but just one point? I'd let you be a ranger with a WIS of 12--but you should know that means you have a 5% chance of spell failure. That means once you do get spellcasting capability, you'd have to roll a 1d100 every time you cast a spell. If you get a 5 or less, the spell is expended but fizzles. A small risk, but you never know when it will come up.

I'll leave it to you to decide.

There are quite a few small wooded areas in Haven, according to the map. How about the one near the Haven Arms Inn? That way she can dumpster dive for free grub.

So she's a fighter/cleric with the fighting monk kit, if I recall? Did you ever decide on her proficiencies and gear and such?

Sure, that sounds fine. We can assume that the Seeker from his village gave him some kind of papers to get through the gate; otherwise the guards would probably turn him away, thinking him another refugee.

Actually, I was going to start the game in the morning. Did you want him to arrive in the morning instead, or start out on the road, and roleplay him making his way to Haven? He could maybe encounter some refugees on the way, see them get turned away at the gates, and it could sort of be a first glimpse of just how bad things are.

I move the 12 to dex, with her elven bonus she gets 13 and the 14 to wis and off we go..

Means her "thief skills" are reduced but still good.
She'll still do a little extra damage...

STR 16
DEX 13
CON 15
INT 8
WIS 14
CHA 10

That works, too.

TheMightyQuinn has not responded yet to my email. According to his profile at the Playground, he has logged in as recently as this morning, so...not sure what is going on there, but it's starting to seem unlikely he'll have his character ready by tomorrow. But that's okay, we seem to be swimming in players as it is. Kind of weird how successful this game is turning out. Certainly better than I thought; I was going to consider myself lucky if I could get at least four people; now I have eight!

Here's what I still need from everyone:

Breila - Just a short blurb of Khush's personality.

NoTrammeling - Proficiencies and gear.

TheMightyQuinn - Pretty much everything!

Jenara - Proficiencies, gear, biography, etc.

Everyone else is ready to go.

Tomorrow! I can't believe how soon it is. I'll probably get the first post up as soon as I can. My internet has been just awful lately. I sometimes have outages lasting up to 8 hours at a time. If this wasn't a play-by-post game, it would be so doomed. But luckily, I can usually get online long enough each day to post at least once.

So what that means is, I don't know when tomorrow the first post will go up. But it will go up tomorrow--I mean, at least by the standards of my timezone. It might actually be Sunday or something for poor NoTrammeling--I forget just how far ahead Australia is from the west coast of America.

Anyway, if anyone has any questions before tomorrow, feel free to ask. For those of you who have never gamed with me before, if you're curious about how my games usually go, you can check out Unlikely Heroes or Lost Souls if you've got some free time on your hands. Lost Souls, in particular, is also a sandbox (although it's not Dragonlance). While Unlikely Heroes, while not a sandbox exactly, is set in Dragonlance, too (although about 25 years further down the timeline.)

I guess there isn't much to say beyond that. Other than, I suppose, to comment that this is the most multi-classed characters I've ever seen before. We have a cleric/thief, an illusionist/thief, a ranger/cleric, and a fighter/cleric. I'm guessing you guys thought to multi-class clerics so that you have something to fall back on while you wait for your powers to arrive? That was my theory, anyway. Not complaining or anything, I just thought it was interesting. Most of my parties have one multi-class character, if any at all.

Whatever the case may be, I'm looking forward to tomorrow!
