The Brink [of Madness] Act 1, Scene 1

A classic 2e Puzzle dungeon for High Level characters
Beware, this one is substantially longer and (IMHO) even harder than the legendary Tomb of Horrors!

"Perhaps a chicken or goat for camp here would work in the bubble. What the worst that could happen? Turn into a cockatrice or an off brand minotaur?" Perhaps a dirk would be of use to carry in case we run into something else similar on our next foray into the maw of madness."

That's a great idea! I can Contact the critter, and then if/when it vanishes from the 'blood' bubble, I can look through its eyes to see if it came out somewhere safe! And I'm sure we can purchase a knife of some kind here in camp.

Lorard nods at the suggestion There are some chickens and goats in camp, or we can have a hunter capture something.

====
chicken, goat or knife can be purchased at the normal book value in the phb. Or someone with the hunting skill can catch a critter with a snare (some people in camp have the skill if none of the pcs do)

Has anyone identified the magic items you brought forth from your first entrance into the Labyrinth? I understand there is typically a gemstone required to cast the divination. I have a blue spinel here that's been valued at 100 gp that I'd be happy to donate.

Acid will purchase a (live) chicken and enough knives to outfit the group for those that don't have one.

Great!” Stephen reaches into his belt and pulls out a blue gem. “Let us know what you brought up, so we can see where they will do the most good.

Steve hands Jag a stone, but the tusked elf quickly realizes that he doesn't have the Identify spell prepared today. He also knows that the component must be a 100 gp pearl

Jag will blush, probably not noticeable.

"We will need a pearl. And I will need to study the spell to prepare it."

He will hand the stone back.

Ah. Yes, apparently I did not pay enough attention when my previous companions were casting the spell. Perhaps I can trade the gem for a pearl here in the camp.

<<Miss Gallus, are you aware of anyone in the camp who might possess a pearl they would be willing to part with (with reimbursement) to permit casting a spell that will identify the magic items recovered from the Labyrinth?>>

<<There should be a few people in camp with such things. I'll have someone ask around.>>

A little while later a man in his 30s approaches them with an array of pearls and other small items common to spell components for sale. He also offers his service in Identifying items for 100 gp+100 gp/ item to be identified

Stephen gives the man a short bow. “Thank you for coming. We really appreciate your help,” he tells the man as he looks over the selection of pearls.

What do you think, Master Jagrinder? Will any of these do for your spell?

Stephen accepts a blade from Axid with a smile. “My thanks, Master Brasspick! I appreciate your thoughtfulness. Sometimes we overlook the small things while preparing for the big things.

“Master Stephen, I’m hoping these things don’t find themselves stored in me back courtesy of one of our necros. However, it looks like will help us advance through this unique puzzle.” Axid slightly arches an eyebrow at the mention of ‘Brasspick’ but remembers he has a nametag he forgot to remove. Being a professional locksmith and all that.

"Yes these should do." He will purchase one himself, to have in reserve, as long as Stephen is trading one.
"I will need to prepare the spell, are you fellows done all your plans? Or is there another day in camp?"

Stephen trades one of his deep blue spinels for one of the indicated pearls, which he then gives to Jag.

After the gem dealer departs, Stephen turns to Jag. “Speaking of expenses, is there any agreement as to paying for common expenses, and for the sharing of spoils? I did not arrive in time for your first foray into the Labyrinth, and Miss Gallus mentioned nothing of the sort during my interview.

I believe it's currently the afternoon/evening of the 4th. I think we're planning to head back in the morning of the 5th. If we want to wait 3 more days or so, I could probably have another Dimension Blade gem finished (and Ke'Sha could probably have a bunch more undead villagers), but I think Angel might kick us out of camp if we wait that long.
