The modules had a goal, because we were in transition we needed to find our own goal.
The group you have are very focused, well all but Locky, who is rather focused for a Kender.
We have a goal, something to achieve, we were just stuck. I am looking forward to what happens next.

I updated the XP for the last chapter. It wasn't much, but it did put Thuskar into the fourth level.
I'll be adding Malika's stat block to the others pretty soon, too.

I wouldn't say I preferred it. I liked it, sure. The difficulty was in the transition.
You see, in modules, there generally is a pre-set goal and the player's task is to find out what that goal is and discover a way to achieve it. In time, players learn to pick up hints to that effect.
So when you presented Malika and the enslaved kender to us, it felt, to me at least, like freeing them was a goal of the game, and we thought we had to find the right way to achieve that. In a typical module, there would have been a way, sometimes hidden and hard to discover, and not always very logical (that's why some people feel railroaded when playing in modules, I think). When the ideas we had did not work, we thought that either we were too stupid or you didn't want the players to succeed. Both are not very encouraging thoughts, so the interest dropped for a while.
I guess now that we have adjusted to the "non-module" mode, things will get better. Like Jen, I'm looking forward to the next encounters.

Alright. I was actually very, very close to shutting this game down due to lack of interest, so I'm glad we cleared that up.
I'm nearly ready to start the new adventure and chapter. In the meantime, I would suggest you guys look through your inventories in the Character Stats thread. All of you are in light encumbrance, except Locky, who's in moderate. Not really a problem on a boat, unless you get knocked overboard or something. But it will affect some of your combat abilities, so you may want to double-check, rearrange things, get rid of junk you don't need (remember; this is a merchant's vessel, therefore buying and selling shouldn't be too hard) and so on. Also, yeah, you can purchase new stuff, too. Don't worry too much about food and water, at least until they make landfall, since the party will share with the rest of the crew.
Yesh, speaking of the crew, I need to go and work on them now, especially the captain and the minotaur first mate (neither of which even has a name yet).

My suggestion is that we sell the barrels Dekker carries once the water is used. Out of the desert, we should be fine with the water skins. Then Babushka can transfer one of her water skins, her bedroll and her spare clothes to Dekker again. She will try to sell her "normal" dagger as well. That takes the 19 lbs off her she needs to shed to get out of encumbrance.

Locky will sell:
spare waterskin, desert robes.
And eat some of the 14 rations she has, as well as put 60 of the steel she has in the chest.
Jerrard will sell:
Apare waterskin and a flask of oil.
And eat some of the 14 rations they he has.
He will also buy Malika a sword and scabbard if a Kopesh is available, along with any gear she might need.
Bedrolls they wont need to carry, nor backpacks, assuming they will be kept safe somehow... (Cantrip to guard them?)

Kept safe where? In the hold? You can leave your stuff there, if you trust the sailors not to get into them (remember, they all sleep in there, too). I'm not aware of any cantrips that can protect your stuff, especially as cantrips require constant concentration or they fail.

I never said there was a gnome on the crew. I said there was a half-elf, a minotaur, a Baaz and a goblin. The rest are human.
