The picture is the archetypical picture of Laurana from the 'War of the Twins'... As you don't know the story I won't say where it is... But it defines the series in a way.. Struggle, even a Princess ends up dirty and ragged, yet shows her greatest nobilty.

The old Picture was Lena Galius or Angel, My Half Elf Disgraced Legionare... She has a grim nobility.

From Flint's referral to the "medicine woman" and the type of clothes in the pictures, I gather that the plainsfolk culture is based on North American Plains Indians (Lakota, Cheyenne etc.). Is that true?

In my inner picture of Goldmoon and Riverwind, I had something more oriental in my mind, such as Beduins, Tuareg or the Rajasthan Nomads. Does it matter?

As the writers are American they had indeed based the plainsmen on the native American tribes, think i read that somewhere.

Well - Laurana is a girl (or at least a very young woman) in a situation she's completely unprepared for, while Goldmoon right now is doing what comes closest to what we would today call her profession. This must show in roleplaying, mustn't it?

(and anyway, Goldmoons emotions aren't involved right now, so she keeps a cool head...)
