I did meet one New Yorker, ran an engine test house on the edge of the swamps (if that's what they're called) in Florida.
He was hard as nails. Nil SOH.
Felt like he expected $20 just for you to shake his hand. Saying "hello, how are you" cost more..
:)
While some places in the US are known for people like that, others are known for people who are nice. My (new) home state of Minnesota is one of these, so much so that there's the term of "Minnesota Nice" for it. Granted, it's not all sunshine and roses...Minnesota Nice has its share of negative aspects as well. See also "southern hospitality" et. al.

My original home state of Wisconsin, on the other hand, is also well-mannered but known most for its copious alcohol consumption.

Wait, you live in Minnesota? South Dakota is full of friendly people, and copious amounts of cold.

In response to the tale Gregeddin mentioned in his post, the saving of the blue-cloaked woman was one of the Tales that Haahqae had decided he wasn't going to tell people at one point, due to it being a very hush-hush job at the time they were doing it. However, a few days ago I had the thought... what about the story about saving that blue-cloaked woman? The people who would extract vengeance on Haahqae from the telling of the tale were more or less wiped out when the new army took control of the city, so perhaps he would tell it to Shima.

Oh, it's nothing like that. South Dakota and Minnesota are neighboring states that share much of their culture between them. The Europeans that settled both (and the rest of the upper Midwest) were largely Scandinavian and German, and these days, the differing demographics between the two states (Minnesota has a much larger urban population than South Dakota) is the main source of difference between the two. While I can't speak for the South Dakotans, we Minnesotans generally like our neighbors to the west.

(I still would be leery about trying a South Dakotan hot dish, though...)

Horizon - working customer service anywhere grants you free access to stupidity. But you work in Casino? Sounds great job. A lot of action and, well... adventures :)

Wait a minute...

Ok, of those living in the US, how many are from or have lived in the Midwest (Wisc, Minnesota, Michigan) or northwest (Washington, Oregon, Dakotas, etc)
I mean, I know D&D got it's start in Lake Geneva Wi, but it seems like a pretty strong trend on this site...

I am from the south east but I lived in Wisconsin for 7 years... my Wisconsin-born wife always remarks on the hospitality and friendliness here (we moved south not long ago).

Horizon and I were both born in the south (Oklahoma and Mississippi, respectively), but now both live in the Northwest (Washington).

We'll I'm not American, but as a Canadian it's almost the same thing.

So yeah, Ontario counts as North-East I guess?
