Yes they do exist.
Most members of your order would preclude their learning to Elvish, Ancient Common, or Dwarven. Some of your peers specialize in certain languages like Gnome, Lizardman, and Goblinoid tongues.
Here's some info on the deity:
Lor
Greater God of Secrets, Life, Knowledge, Wisdom, and Light.
TN
Holy symbol: : mask
This ancient order is revered and looked upon as the ultimate authority on obscure subjects, and are employed as highly coveted investigators, barristers, spies, detectives, counselors, sages, demonologists, bodyguards and protectors.
Lorian priests and priestesses also have the reputation for fair impartiality and keen legal minds able to find loopholes in any system and to exploit such to their advantage.
The core doctrine of the order is to safeguard and protect certain secrets from being released into the wild, and to intentionally unleash others that are due to be discovered. Some are beneath the immediate notice of others, and others are significant (e.g. coming of a new king, birth of a new God, the second cataclysm)
Custodians of all the worlds knowledge, some followers of Lor can be thought to be knowledgable skilled fighters, others know magic or forbidden technology, and some are trained illusionists and thieves. It is because of this multi faceted skillset that most Lorians are afforded a grudging healthy respect and reputation that proceeds them.

I sneezed and the tavern disappeared and I was in combat!
Nocturno, I'm glad you were aiming to wound them only because those damage rolls certainly reflected that...

Re: Scarlor OOC thread
Does the STR damage bonus apply to ranged attacks?
I know I would use dex for to hit.
Even my 9 couldn't have been that far from hitting, with my dex racial and specialization bonuses.
Either way my crap damage rolls made for setting up a good through the eye shot to shut the bastards up.(I hope)

Re: Scarlor OOC thread
well, if your dex gives you +2 and your elven-ness gives you +1 your thaco would be 17 (not sure what specialization does for bows in 1e aside from adding more shots/round and the 'point blank' aiming category) so a 9 would hit if the guy's AC was 8 or worse... so if he is wearing leather armor and has any dex bonus to AC at all, you'd miss... or if he had any armor better than leather...
Re: Scarlor OOC thread
Right I was assuming, probably incorrectly about the Wps for longbow giving +hit.

Re: Scarlor OOC thread
Yeah, it's weird. 2e is like that also. The only attack bonus for bow specialization is to attacks Within the point-blank range (6'-30') and the bonus is +2...
actually, you would have gotten that if he had been closer (assuming a 'pace' is 2-3feet, the leader was 30-45 feet away and just out of range). Even so, it would only have been a +2 so if he was wearing chainmail it still wouldn't score a hit...
Edit: I read further and found that 'short range' (30' to lower limit of med range) for a bow specialist gets +1 to hit and damage.
All in Unearthed Arcana

@Nocturno: Not unless you have a composite short/longbow to take advantage of high strength score damage.
After decapitating the first of the two assassins Idrys see's they're each wearing black chainmail beneath their garb.
*THWWWPPPPPPPTPTTTTTTTTT* an arrow flies out from the weeping willow, flying past Idrys and thudding into the ground somewhere behind him.
Assassin #2 hurls a dagger at Idrys (-2 hp dmg)
Assassin #3 flung a dagger that pierced Idrys in the stomach (-2 hp dmg) while only incurring marginal damage hurts like hell for 4 rounds, you gain a -2 to due to the biting pain.

[OOC: Ruh-roh. 1 more damage from a blade and I'm going into bloodlust... I'd better make sure the closest thing to me is an enemy or things could get pretty hairy...]
[Let me know if you want me to move the ooc posts and game posts to their proper threads... might be less confusing...]

Right, I knew I was missing something there!
I need to get on my game here!
Did Delilah see where the arrow came from?

I think it's 50% loss of current, not merely below 50% of max HP..

Doesn't the PHB specifically list a Club in the description?spike wrote:note you cannot backstab with blunt weapons only piercing.
Re: Scarlor OOC thread
I believe blackjack, as a knock out blow to base of skull. I'll look it up it's been awhile.
But in all honesty I don't see realism in backstabbing with a quarterstaff to quantify backstab level epic damage (e.g. 4d6) unless it was a Shaolin Monk doing the backstabbing with said staff. Saying this because I've trained with quarterstaff in martial arts before. Though arguably I could see attempting to shatter lower spine with quarterstaff as a called strike come to think of it.
Either way, it's pretty improbable to move silently out in the open and backstab with a quarterstaff even if surprise is achieved, the thief needs to be extremely well concealed/undetected (hidden in shadows). Trying to backstab assassins with a quarterstaff in open and lit conditions is a slim fat chance.
