"Ah thank you, brothers." Gregeddin replies with sprightly tone, taking up his chair, knife and fork.

"I say winter's jaws feel like they're starting to bite, I'm glad to be here rather than on the road! Has the city been treating you well?" He asks the group.

Using his peripheral vision, Gregeddin tries to gauge if the whole common room was watching them as intently as before. He was content to make pleasant small talk until people lost interest and things felt comfortable again. He also takes this opportunity to look more closely at the three men he had joined.

"You wouldn't be saying that if you were in their shoes," Kendra points out. "They are people, just like us, except they don't have a home now because of unknown dangerous that ravaged their home," she says. "And while I know Haven doesn't have unlimited resources, that doesn't mean that these people should be treated horribly because of it."

Kendra couldn't believe she was having this conversation. "And that riot started because of me," she adds. "I arrested a man that was, while recruiting for his new religion, was also spreading a little bit of hope," she says.

Darga bows low again, both to show his gratitude and to hide his suspicion at the man's implications. Before hurrying off, he promises, "Ya don' have ta worry, Master Magnus. I'll let Master Elf know yer wantin' ta see him as soon as I kin find him."

With a few coins to call his own once again, Darga heads towards the market with the intent to buy some food.

(OOC: Knowing that his two silver won't go far, Darga's not looking for anything more than the basics. Still, even if they have the cheapest food, he'll refuse to buy from the Steel Tankard.)

Listening to the hunter Haahqae nods, swallows a piece of bacon and gives him a strait explanation of why he's here. "Well let me hear you out and maybe together we can think of something. I'm a nice guy who likes helping people out and we have a saying on Nevermind... Actually we have a few sayings on Nevermind. One's that if your apprentice can figure out what your machine does at first glance, try adding more leavers and gears or dials. Another saying is that the only thing that is impossible is finding something that cannot be done. The point is I might be able to help."

Tulbas Erogund (Grand Market)
Tulbas quickly goes through his pack. He finds his spellbook, a torch, a sheet of blank paper, an hourglass, some candles, some rations, a handful of coins, and the grey robes the cultists gave him. But no healing kit.

With no other choice, the young elf begins tearing off pieces of his cloak to use as bandages. He binds his uncle's wounds until he can stop the bleeding.

He then takes a moment to consider his options. He could try the Seekers; most of their priests have training in healing. But their temple is clear across the city, and his uncle is taller and heavier than Tulbas.

He could try dragging him back to the mageware shop and perform the healing himself. There are medical supplies there, although it's still a bit of a walk--not nearly as far as the Seeker temple, though.

A third option--he knows of an herbalist who lives near the market place. He knows nothing of the person, including how competent or expensive he might be, he has only heard of him in passing. But he's by far the closest one.

Gregeddin (Masked Dragon Inn, common room)
"Yes..," the lead monk says. "It's a fine city with fine people. But we will be forced to take back to the road soon. You see, we are on an important mission. You seem a worldly fellow. Perhaps you have heard something of a staff made of blue crystal? It is magical and very important to our order. We are also searching for a man with a green gemstone embedded in his chest. Have you heard of either of these?"

Gregeddin discretely surveys the room around him. He is still holding the stares of most of the patrons, but as the conversation continues, more and more seem to lose interest and go back to their own meals or discussions. The exception is the two humans--the man and the woman--who were not talking at all, but watching everyone themselves. They keep their attention divided between the bard and the Seeker priestess.

Gregeddin also looks over these strange monks more closely. There was certainty something disquieting about these monks. It was easy to see why so many give them a wide berth. They were tall, about six feet in height, and broad-shouldered. Their long grey robes shroud their bodies, their hooded cloaks cover their faces. Their hands and feet are completely wrapped in cloth, like bandages covering leprous wounds. Despite how close up he is, Gregeddin cannot see their faces, only dark, glittering eyes through a swath of cloth; for even their faces are bandaged up.

It was impossible to discern their race. They could be human, hobgoblin, half-ogre...or something else entirely.

Kendra Synclair (2527 Market Street, Greylock's Gorgeous Gems)
"Nonsense," Norris replies. "You were just doing your job. You were trying to protect people from charlatans and con-men, as well as blasphemous heathens. That was no excuse to riot. It was no excuse for them to break into my shop, nearly kill me and burn the place down. If they were unhappy with that man's arrest, there are proper channels to go through. You don't just start rioting when things don't go your way."

Having finished bandaging her up, he picks up her torn, bloody clothes to discard them. He also hands her her flannel pajamas. It's a cold day out, and sitting there nearly naked was leaving her feeling rather chilled.

Darga (Grand Market)
Darga makes his way to the market square, which thankfully isn't too far away from the mageware shop. Searching around, he finds a food vendor who has set up a small stand. He sells bread for 5 copper and a pint of beer for 2 copper. It's nothing fancy, but it should sustain him.

There are a pair of kender already at the stand. One of them is buying some bread while the other talks to him.

"It's true! He appeared right in the middle of the square, out of nowhere. Just a flash of red light, and boom! There he was. All dressed in red, like a real mage!" says one. "It was like an hour ago, it was incredible!"

"I can't believe I missed it!" laments the other. "I always miss stuff like that. Did he cast any other fancy spells?"

"Nope, he just muttered something and fell over. He looked pretty hurt, actually. Maybe magicking yourself around hurts. That seems like a pretty big downside. But then again, it's much faster than walking. It might be worth it," speculates the first one. "Anyway, some kid ran up to him, yelling "Uncle!" and dragged him off somewhere."

"Maybe the kid was the mage's nephew," says the other.

"What makes you say that?"

"Well, why else would he call him 'uncle'?"

"Oh, yeah. Good point. I ever tell you about my Uncle Trapspringer? He once got turned into a squirrel by a mage. It was a pretty amazing experience, except a girl squirrel fell in love with him and chased him all over the place."

The two begin walking off, having finished buying their bread. "Is he still a squirrel?!"

"Nah, he got better..."

Haahqae (Steel Tankard Inn, common room)
The huntsman stares blankly at Haahqae a moment, then seeming to digest his words, nods and strokes his beard. "I see," he says. A moment of silence passes while Haahqae chews on his bacon. It's fairly good, but a bit dry with nothing to wash it down.

The huntsman explains. "The problem is a nasty creature that dwells in the nearby mountains. Are you familiar with giantkin? Specifically, a hill giant. He has moved in recently, in the past couple of months. Every few days, he ventures down and attacks the many refugees camped outside of the city. They are defenseless against him. I have tried to fight him, but I am but one man. I need a group of brave warriors to help me in tracking the beast to its lair and slaying him." He looks the gnome over--he takes note of the silly hat, the shoes with the upturned toes and the apparent lack of visible weapons. "Forgive me for saying so, but you do not seem to fit the bill, good sir."

==========

Tulbas stabilizes Raetmal.

(OOC: Although Darga and Tulbas are technically both in the grand market now, Darga is a little over an hour ahead of everyone because of all the traveling from place to place he's been doing. So while it's about 8:30 for Tulbas, it's about 9:45 for Darga. So, same place, different times.)

Kendra takes her PJ's and puts them on slowly. "When a person is desperate for food or money, they aren't really concerned about proper channels," she points out. "It seems the same goes for hope too."

Gregeddin continues to eat his breakfast as the lead monk tells of the staff and gemstone, gazing into their eyes curiously.

Pausing from eating Gregeddin replies, "Indeed, although I am only of a few years age, I do make an effort to meet new faces and learn the exciting tales of the world. While I do not recall anything about the staff or gemstone I rarely remember an item by itself, is there an associated legend or tale with either piece you, or rather, your order desire?"

Noting that the man and woman from the 'watching table' were still, watching. Gregeddin discretely tries to identify if they were armed or should they pose a potential threat.

Though he knew it to be impolite in the higher brow circles, Gregeddin's curiosity to know more about these characters prompted him to add, "And I must applaud your devotion to your order's cause, travelling a long distance from your homes, especially while injured." in a coy tone.

"Aww just a giant?" Haahqae utters his displeasure, but quickly follows it up with qualifiers. "Not to cheapen your problem or anything, I'm sure a giant is a terrible thing to happen and a grave danger to your people. It's just it doesn't sound as exciting as demons of your own did. Well never the less, I'm the sorts that likes to help people out, and as long as you're people with a problem, I should see what I can do.

"Well I may look a lil' small to be true, but I assure you that I know how to use this sling here, and I can also use a bow in a pinch. But what I most offer you is that I happened to gather a good group of veritable heroes to clear the demons out of the mine, if we're lucky we may well be able to bring some of them along to help you as well.

Would you like to take a trip with me to the mageware shop and see if a patron there is willing to help? I left the others near there so they might still be around."

Darga takes his bread gratefully and tears off a chunk before putting the rest away for later. As he eats his portion, he listens, first with interest and then with alarm, to the kender as they discuss the strange magical happening. While they could be talking about anyone, the references to the mage's red robes and his concerned nephew remind him all too well of the mageware shop's proprietor. Finishing off his bread, Darga hurries after the two kender. Catching up with them, he asks, "This mage an' his nephew...d'ya know where they went?"

Kendra Synclair (2527 Market Street, Greylock's Gorgeous Gems) [8:15 AM]
"Nonsense. I would never attack innocent people, no matter how desperate I was," Norris says, standing up and walking to the bedroom door. "When I arrived in this city, I had little more than the clothes on my back. But I made a name for myself, built up my business and am now quite wealthy. The only reason those refugees have not is because they are lazy and immoral. They expect free handouts and when they don't get them, they riot."

Gregeddin (Masked Dragon Inn, common room) [9:15 AM]
The monk hesitates a moment before speaking. "The staff has the power to heal sickness and mend wounds. We traveled the world, using it to bring succor to a desperate world, until it was stolen by us from a barbarian criminal. We have been searching all of Abanansinia for the staff since then. We tracked him to a barbarian village, but arrived too late to catch him, and have since lost his trail."

He looks to his two companions before continuing. "As for the green gemstone man, he is a dangerous criminal, wanted for the murder of countless people. He's very dangerous, and the sooner he is brought safely into custody, the better for all."

Gregeddin discretely checks out the paranoid looking man and woman. Both are dressed in simple, fairly cheap clothing. They are not wearing armor and carry no visible weapons, but it's more than possible they might have concealed ones.
Gregeddin wrote:"And I must applaud your devotion to your order's cause, travelling a long distance from your homes, especially while injured."
"All the more reason to find the staff," the monk replies.

Haahqae (Steel Tankard Inn, common room) [8:30 AM]
The huntsman raises a brow to Haahqae. "'Just a giant?' Methinks you underestimate their might. They stand up to sixteen feet or higher. I've seen them slay a skilled warrior in heavy armor with a single swing of a club or a hurl of a boulder. I've seen arrows, bolts and stones shot by skilled marksmen bounce off their tough hides as if nothing. And that's for a single, lone giant. I know not what else might guard its lair--dire wolves, giant lizards, or even more giants or possibly ogres."
Haahqae wrote:"Would you like to take a trip with me to the mageware shop and see if a patron there is willing to help? I left the others near there so they might still be around."
The huntsman squirms a bit at the thought. "Mageware? I am not comfortable in such a place. But if you truly do know a group of capable of heroes, bring them back here so I might meet them."

Darga (Grand Market) [9:45 AM]
The two kender stop and turn to face Darga.

"Ohhh, well, you see," begins the one who claimed to have seen them in the first place, "I wanted to follow after them, see? But there was this big crowd, and people kept getting in my way. Then someone yelled that their coin purse was stolen. So I thought I should try and find the thief instead. But I never found him. I did find the coin purse, though. I guess the poor guy just dropped it." He holds up the same purse he used to buy the loaf of bread. "So then I started looking for the guy who lost it, so I could return it to him. But I couldn't find him, and then I got hungry, so I thought I'd buy some bread. Then I ran into my friend here...and...wait, what was your question again?" he asks.

How interesting, Gregeddin thought, my impression of these seems so different to Raetmal's. While obscure, their motives appear philanthropic enough. Given the dire state of Haven I really do hope this refreshing burst of kindness is genuine. Darga would like these folk I think.

Gregeddin nods along intently, "The staff sounds truly incredible, the difference it could make here with the thousands of refugees, or in waging warfare I suppose. But how did the staff come into being? I thought all powers of healing vanished after the Cataclysm? This may be a naive question regarding magic, but is it possible to create such magical items?"

Taking a little time to continue his breakfast and digest the information flooding his way, Gregeddin then asks, "Does your order have a name and is it very large? If someone has killed countless, three is a pretty easy number to count. What would you do when you confront such a dangerous foe?"

"Oh yes yes. I've read that giants are capable of terrorizing towns and fighting armies by themselves, but at the same time they're just big and stupid and I find it unlikely that a giant's going to be involved in some deeper malicious plot to uncover, be holding onto ancient treasures lost to the ages or to be on the leading edge of defining what magic can do. Ne'er the less the giant is causing problems, and helping you is it's own reward, even if the villain is a bit mundane."

Finishing his bacon Haahqae gets up. "Hmm, well I guess mage ware isn't for everyone, so I guess I'll try and round up my friends and bring 'em here."

Then turns to make his way to the doorway, sorting things out with himself. "I think Mr hero knight guy's already left. Not much chance at getting him to come. The girl's getting married, hopefully she can work this around her wedding schedule. The mage seems fairly willing to help people out, that's good. And maybe if I mention refugees the dwarf'll be willing to come along too."

And once outside Haahqae makes his way back to the mage ware shop.
