Re: OOC Thread
I've moved the six sling stones from Areilon to Jocelyn. Areilon is no longer encumbered.
Re: OOC Thread
Great thanks, was going to post that. She'll loose the sling too.

The sling has been removed from her inventory.
Re: OOC Thread
I am ridiculously pleased with myself with that description of the last round. I think for mass combats, from now on, I'll break it up into little parallel scenes like that.
Something I wanted to ask, though, Breila:
Something I wanted to ask, though, Breila:
It's not important, but I am curious. Why did Ouragana memorize Featherfall for this voyage? She deliberately freed up her spellslot for this specific spell, so I assume there was a reason for it.Breila wrote:Ouragana keeps close to the mast, silently cursing herself for having exchanged her spells. Making the side of the ship slippery would have been just the thing to do now... However, she keeps her dagger drawn.
Re: OOC Thread
When setting her up, I thought that would be her routine while out at sea, not being a combatant, she finds it most useful to be prepared to keep others from harm. With feather fall, she can prevent injuries from falls (out of the rigging or crow's nest) and falling objects.
There's more to me than meets the eye...
Re: OOC Thread
So you intentionally created her to not be an adventurer, then? I was struck by the fact she has no combat spells at all when you first turned in her character sheet. But I wasn't certain you had done that on purpose.Breila wrote:When setting her up, I thought that would be her routine while out at sea, not being a combatant, she finds it most useful to be prepared to keep others from harm. I had a feeling you'd like that.Nuke wrote:woot! and she gets two attacks next round, that trident is almost hers
Don't get cocky, though! The chieftain has 2+2 more HD than a regular sahuagin.
Re: OOC Thread
I kind of wanted to try out if a pacifist scholar had any chance of survival. Honestly, being able to fire a single missile isn't that much better in a combat at all, so I thought it would be worth the try.

Re: OOC Thread
Well, that certainly explains a few things. Seems quite the self-imposed challenge on a character that was already pretty weak (level 1 mage) to begin with! I hope you're still having fun then, despite being almost useless in a fight.
Do you intend to improve her combat spells as she levels or continue this challenge throughout? If the latter is the case, I can suggest some useful but non-damaging spells next time she's in a position to learn new ones (Sleep, for instance, is a life-saver at low level).
Also, I disagree about your statement that casting Magic Missile is almost as useless as having no damaging spells at all. Keep in mind that Magic Missile never misses, no matter what; it's guaranteed damage, even if not all that much.
By the way, did you know that Featherfall can also be used to stop arrows and other projectiles in ship-to-ship combat? Might come in handy down the line after all, should the party ever fight pirates or what have you.

Re: OOC Thread
Yes, I thought featherfall might be used for that, only I wasn't sure if the reaction time was good enough to stop arrows.
I'm not sure yet if I want to keep the "no combat spells" rule, some things may depend on a roleplay encounter with her teachers.

Re: OOC Thread
Yes, it requires good timing to pull off.
Likewise, Grease can be used to repel boarders, as she already surmised. And Mending can be used to fix a ship that has taken damage; even a broken keel, which is usually impossible to repair under normal circumstances.
But something to think about: While a pacifist character can be pulled off (consider Amon, for instance), a character who is utterly useless in battle is a liability to the others in her group, too. Remember the structure of the game assumes the party fulfills their roles to survive. Imagine if Jocelyn never healed anyone or Val never carried weapons or armor.
It's fine and well to do a little experiment where you create a weak character just to see if she'll survive or not; but you forgot to take into consideration that her weakness may wind up costing her teammates their lives, as well. If you had told me at the beginning this was your intention, I would have tried to talk you out of it.
If you want to give her non-lethal combat spells, like Sleep, Stinking Cloud, Hold Person and so forth, that's well and good. But I hope you don't continue to only give her non-combat utility spells, lest you put the whole party at risk of a TPK by being the weak link.
(P.S. Waiting for your action to continue the next round.)

Re: OOC Thread
No, Ouragana certainly has leared by now that the world is a much tougher place than she thought it to be. She will definitely try to learn the non-lethal spells you mentioned!

Sure about that second one?Nuke wrote:OOC: I count +3. +1 specialization, +1 Male, +1, blessing.
According to the MM, sahuagin males and females are indistinguishable from each other; and I've carefully been using a gender neutral pronoun when describing them.
Re: OOC Thread
It had 10 HP left, so had Boffi made a regular attack instead of a critical, there was a good chance you could have finished it off; assuming it didn't finish you off first!Nuke wrote:Damn, thought I'dda had 'em if I actually got the chance.
And weird, I didn't expect everyone taking Ouragana's sudden ability to levitate in stride, especially Ouragana herself.
Re: OOC Thread
Wasn't fully sure if Arei saw it, her focus was on Andar and the Dwarf
