CH. 3: Mages, Mages Everywhere

This 2E Dragonlance game is set in the city of Haven, during the War of the Lance. Haven is a city undergoing great upheaval. First massive numbers of refugees pour in, then the city is conquered by a draconic army. Can our heroes survive under this dark occupation?

Gregeddin frantically skips and weaves in the melee. The relief that his body remained intact amongst the metal, and all of the Cavalier he could now see was a billowing, burgeoning shadow of a cloak helped calm his nerves. Faith in his allies was well placed as he noted more bodies hugging the ground.

Gregeddin yells back at Trench, "I shall have this pikeman. Realise your destiny and strike that Cavalier! Though try and leave the cloak intact, it looks rather nice and I could use one for these months. Haahqae! Another arrow here kind sir thank you!"

Gregeddin hops over the body of P3 and strikes at P4.

"Jolly nice of them to just walk into our trap like that. I guess the Ergothians are more brawn then brains. But judging how the fight's going, I'm not sure if they have much of that either." Haahqae twirls his arrows before notching them, to get bonus style points. It however has his tradeoffs, since he's careless with his aiming.

(Haahqae targets P4 and looses 2 arrows. Init(1d10+7): 14; Hit(1d20+5): 8, 8; Damage 3, 8)

With the sudden urge of empowerment, Kendra grins a little bit at the swordmen as she makes her attack. "Darga, get away from him!" she calls out as she saw the little dwarf run to attack the one person that he wasn't suppose to attack.

Tulbas looks down at the Cavalier and shouts, "Champion of the company, I've heard of you. Our greatparents knew each other. That means my grandfather knew your great great grandfather. You, as your ancestor is a man of hounor, so order your men to lower their weapons so we can stop the slaughter and discuss the matter at hand!!" Not sure how will it prove and seeing the wound Kendra had taken, Tulbas also prepares to throw his darts at the swordman attacking her.

=======================================================================
(OOC: Tulbas readies himself to shoot three darts at Swordman 01. Initiative (1d10+2 = 4), Attacks (3x(1d20+1) = 9,4,21) Dmgs (3x(1d3) = 2,2,3)
In invisible castle I wrote 1d10+1 intead of +2 for initiative so it is 4 and not 3. I also got a critical hit in the last shot!! piercing the man eye probably ;) )

The cavalier pauses. He doesn't turn away from Darga, but he does look over his shoulder back toward the rooftop Tulbas is shouting from. "It is you who have attacked us! If you wish to parley, order your men to drop their weapons!"

(OOC: Sorry for the delay; I had a busy weekend.)

Despite striking as hard as he can, Darga takes an unconscious step back as the cavalier turns unfazed to regard him. Knowing that he's in over his head but seeing no better option, Darga raises his walking stick defensively. But before he presses a desperate attack, Tulbas's words buy him time to reconsider. Lowering his stick, Darga backs further away from the cavalier.

Kendra's words pull Darga's attention back to her plight, and he moves to assist her.

Tulbas readies his darts. He had never had any practice at throwing them before, and it proves more difficult than he had imagined. He throws one, then another, but neither comes even close to hitting anyone at all.

The cavalier turns his attention back to Darga. He suddenly swings his pick at the gully dwarf, hitting him in the side and punching right through his leather armor. Staggering, the gully dwarf backs away, his staff raised. The cavalier appears to follow, but then stops when he realizes doing so will leave Daxia unguarded. Instead, he remains where he is, allowing Darga to withdraw.

Kynaston readies his axe. "Destiny, huh?" he says aloud. For a moment, he wonders if perhaps the bard was right. Did everything that had happened--his failure to become a knight, his losing his family one by one, his encountering this group--all lead up to this moment? Maybe so, but there was no time to ponder such deep musings. Kynaston charged at the cavalier, hopping over any bodies in his way, and giving a battle cry. However, at the last second, the cavalier spins on his feel quickly--far too quickly for someone in such heavy armor--and raises his shield. Kynaston bounces off him like a pebble and falls flat on his backside, momentarily stunned. Perhaps destiny wasn't all that it was cracked up to be.

Gregeddin hops over a body and slashes at the last pikeman. The pikeman drops his glaive and reaches for his short sword and shield, but is too slow. The bard cuts him down before he can even remove the weapon from its sheath.

Haahqae, seeing that Gregeddin has things in hands, switches his target to one of the swordsmen. He fires an arrow, then a second, but both miss entirely.

Meanwhile, Kendra has never felt so powerful and confident in her life. The two swordsmen seem to hesitate a moment, as even they notice the change that has come over her. They nervously circle her awhile, before one of them stabs forward with his spear. Kendra easily knocks the spear out of the man's hands with her elven sword, then stabs him right through the neck with her mundane one, killing him instantly.

The other swordsman tries to thrust at her while she's distracted, but is too slow. She easily dances away. He then cries out in pain when a dart manages to perfectly find a weak point in his armor and sink into his chest. It isn't a fatal blow, but it does wound him severely. It seems that Tulbas managed a rather lucky hit with his third dart.

The sound of spellcasting, which nobody can still seem to see the source of, reaches a peak in volume. Whoever is casting a spell is clearly about to finish.

(OOC: Don't forget, Tulbas isn't proficient with darts, so he suffers a -5 to hit. This is true of any weapon he doesn't have proficiency in.

Horizon you forgot to specify which swordsman you were targeting, so I assumed it was the one you attacked last.

Don't worry about it, djhyland; weekends are always slow here at Planet for that very reason.

Cutting down the last pikeman, Gregeddin only glimpses Trench's charge on the Cavalier. The thud into his shield was likely to wake the whole neighbourhood, as too was this mystery mage sounding nothing like Tulbas. Now that Trench was on the floor it became apparent there was only the body of the Cavalier and a swordsman fighting Kendra that stood in our way. How long exactly the sleeping parties will remain knocked out from Tulbas' spell was yet to see. Gregeddin wondered whether they should be dealt with now or later...

Gregeddin needed to buy time, for Kendra to dispatch that last foe and Trench to get off his backside and not get himself killed.

Gregeddin steadily circles round the Cavalier, clockwise to due East. Sword point raised he calls, "Squire of the Empire stand down!" He boldly steps forward, frighteningly close to this towering man, atop of Daxia's position so that her unconscious body is between his spread feet. "If we are to speak it will be done with your helm removed, eye to eye. You will do this or forgo the honour that carried by your title, Cavalier, and ultimately loose your female prize." Gregeddin lets his words hang in the air. He braces himself with all the strength and courage he posses, ready, in case a crushing blow was the Cavalier's reply...

(In short. Full defence mode, stand on Daxia, get his attention pointing East towards Daxia and Tulbas, hopefully Trench doesn't take a beating :) )

"Watch out!" Taking his queue from Tulbas, Haahqae shouts a warning to the cavalier, pointing at his feet. With due haste Haahqae hops off the building onto the boxes, and runs over, apparently concerned about the ground that the cavalier is standing on. Not ten feet away Haahqae unceremoniously stops, muttering something that could sound like "gobblie not friendly", a gnomish swear, or possibly words of magical power, depending on who you ask, and stares at the dark mist which appears to be coming out of the ground all around the cavalier. This mist appears to have Haahqae completely taken in by it's mere appearance, but he does manage to say "run" in a hushed tone.

(OoC: Haahqae moves to the North-east of the cavalier and casts an illusion cantrip. Init (1d10+2): 7 The mist dodges away whenever the cavalier moves, but seems to have a special interest in the cavalier's shield.)

(OOC: Does the sleeping people wake up in round 5 or 6?
And on the round they wake up, can they attack? Are we still get bonus attacking them?
Knowing speech is a free action I'll post regarding it what I believe would really help with the cavalier, and complete the rest of the actions after the questions being answered)

Having the Cavalier answering Tulbas demands gives him the hope the spell had affected. 'Otherwise he wouldn't bother talking to me, would he?' Tulbas wonders.
"Champion, you must protect me from the other mage! He is targeting me. Please track him down before it is too late!" Since Tulbas truly believes there is a mage somewhere, he is again trying to pierce the darkness with his eyes, unsuccessful he decides to quickly climb down, hoping the position change will both interrupt the caster and help himself in the next rounds.

With the cavalier's attack against him, Darga sees that the man has little interest in stopping the fight to negotiate. He also knows that he is wounded, and quite badly. Not wanting to wade back into the fight, where only death was likely to wait for him, but also not wanting to leave his friends to fight for themselves, Darga pulls his shiv out of his boot and hurls it at the cavalier. Although he knows that he has little hope of piercing the warrior's armor, perhaps he can at least provide enough of a distraction to allow Kynaston to regain his footing.

(OOC: Darga's initiative is 10, and he rolls a 13 to hit (maybe 14, should the cavalier be facing towards Kynaston). In the unlikely event that his dagger flies true, he does 4 damage.)

Between the clashing of steel against steel, the screams of pain and death, and the mysterious chanting, all of the noise is beginning to attract some attention. More than a few faces appear in windows or peek out of doors to see what all of the racket is about. Most faces quickly disappear again upon seeing a full on battle taking place.

Tulbas, followed by Haahqae, use the nearby stacked crates to drop down to the ground, hopping from box to box until they reach the bottom. Tulbas tries to take cover from whomever is casting, crying out for the cavalier to protect him. Haahqae, meanwhile, moves forward and just as the mysterious chanter finishes, uses a cantrip to conjure up a mysterious fog around the cavalier. It isn't strong enough to hinder his vision, but it does look rather spooky.

Badly wounded, but not entirely out of fight yet, Darga pulls the dagger from his boot and hurls it at the cavalier. Sadly, it simply bounces off the warrior's armor without so much as a scratch.

Gregeddin circles around, standing protectively over the bound half-elf woman, taunting the cavalier. Kynaston, meanwhile, manages to get to his feet and dusts himself off, looking rather embarrassed.

The cavalier's face is covered by his helmet, so his expression is unreadable. But he hesitates, unsure. Between Tulbas asking for protection from an unseen mage, the strange fog, and the bard's taunting, he seems torn on a decision and instead just stands there, pick in hand, unable to act.

Meanwhile, the last swordsman strikes at Kendra with his spear, giving her a glancing blow across the shoulder. Barely even noticing, she counters with a slash from her elven blade. The swordsman blocks it with the shaft of his spear, but this leaves him open. She then slices with her mundane sword, carving into his stomach as if it were a stuffed goose on Yule Day. He screams out, dropping his weapon and trying to stop his guts from spilling out, but it is of no use. He collapses on the ground, moving no more.

Round 4!

Tulbas hops down from the rooftop by using the nearby crates.
Haahqae hops down from the rooftop by using the nearby crates and moves five feet southwest. He uses an illusion cantrip to create mist around the cavalier.
Darga throws a dagger at the cavalier at short range (1d20): 13, miss.
Swordsman 01 attacks Kendra with his spear against her studded leather (-1) (1d20-1): 16, bare hit for (1d6): 1 damage.
Kynaston gets to his feet. He is no longer prone.
Gregeddin moves 10 feet south and stands over Daxia, moving into full defense. His AC improves by 1 point.
Kendra attacks Swordsman 01 with her magical (+2) sword with great skill (+1) and heroism (+3) (1d20+6): 13, miss. She then attacks him with her mundane sword with great skill (+1) and heroism (+3) (1d20+4): 17, hit for (1d8+3): 11 damage. Swordsman 01 dies.
Cavalier is filled with indecision and cannot act or move.
Kendra has no targets in range for her second attack.

Teeth clenched and eyes wild, Gregeddin found that no thundering blow came, no puncturing impact, nor even an attempt. The chanting died away, yet a black mist arose by the Cavalier's shield. Gregeddin drops his torch and solemnly says "Destiny..."

All at once he is frantic in activity, his now free left hand shoots down between his feet and clutches the scruff of Daxia's hood. He turns South East and begins to power his legs away, starting to run. His momentum is cut short as the strain on his arm registers but continues to press on, dragging Daxia along the floor for as far as he can. Grazed knees and elbows were of little concern given the gravity of the situation. Gregeddin would have liked to behold her head lolling gracefully in time with his strides, however the reality was a thorough rattling of her body over cobblestone.

He calls out "Darga! come take her!" his eyes searching the distance between him and the dwarf.
