The Brink [of Madness] Act 1, Scene 1

A classic 2e Puzzle dungeon for High Level characters
Beware, this one is substantially longer and (IMHO) even harder than the legendary Tomb of Horrors!

Re: The Brink [of Madness] Act 1, Scene 1

Post by TristenC »

Gur continues to invisibly drag one of the poles away from the active trolls. Allikhain directs the flaming sphere to continue burning the prone troll to the northeast, his flesh sizzling and cracking as the magical fire singes him. The skeleton nearby begins to cross the room towards Rror, but the nearby pudding swats it in-passing; completely destroying it. The amorphous blob contimues to devour the Zombified ogre, reducing it to little more than rotten scraps with horrifying alacrity. The prone troll rises and begins to move towards Allikhain with murderous intent. Jack creeps out of the shadow of the Giant Snakehead statue behind the monstrosity. He lunges, his foot catching on one of the carved floor details! He drops his longsword to steady himself but sinks the magical dagger at his left hand into the troll's spine, down to the hilt! The creature gives a shuddering wail as it drops to the hard stone floor.

Axid draws upon the fading flames from one of the downed trolls struck by Jag's magical arrow, causing them to swell to the size of a campfire! With his mental powers he drives the growing flame towards the pole-wielding troll assaulting Landro; badly burning the creature in the process. Meanwhile the other unarmed troll stalks up behind Landro, clawing and biting in a frenzy! The Firbolg's naturally tough hide and magical protection prove sufficient to weather the furious assault without injury. Meanwhile the second pudding engulfs the Zombified Bear, driving Rror to the hard ground as it steadily begins to devour the now-motionless corpse.

Jagrinder, seeing the fire from the troll spread and attack one of the others, begins to weave his own Alteration of the flame. Siezing control, he continues the swath of destruction. The fire rolls like an amorphous blob of flame towards two of the downed trolls and soon their putrid flesh and greasy hair begins to burn, filling the space with a noxious odor. Zum and the last skeleton 'Skiny' move towards the unarmed troll attacking Landro, but stumble over the tangle of fallen troll bodies. Landro cuts down the two remaining trolls with his massive magical sword; strike so hard he bisects the final troll from shoulder to hip!

Only the two puddings remain active in view. While one seems content to consume Rror for now, the other appears to have finished it's meal…

With all his minions useless Ke'Sha climbs up the ladder. If he will have a chance he will say few combatant words, raise his arm high and a glowing black hammer will appear in in it only to strike the closest pudding in the next moment.

[So an actual physical warhammer is the material component for Spiritual hammer that is consumed. This was probably an oversight, so just let me know how many Ke'Sha is carrying around in his bag of holding so we have a count. He can easily afford many.]

Allikhain guides the flaming orb between herself and the nearest pudding. The ball of fire begins to singe the amorphous mound of darkness. From above an array of magical bolts of force streak unerringly to batter the creature, destroying it.

The final pudding finishes consuming the Zombified Bear even as Axid siezes control of more flame and surrounds it. Eager to put their task to rest, landro's massive sword swoops past the flames to strike the final enemy dead. The fires continue to burn some of the downed trolls…

Well, Allikhain begins, And here I was, worried things might become boring… She continues to guide the flaming sphere over one of the downed trolls as the flying black shadow of her familiar appears beside her. Hey toots, nice barbecue! I call the thigh bone! Haha, just kidding, troll meat is F$ck!n6 disgusting! He spits. The ones that fell through the door went Big-SPLAT hahahahha. Those pudding things too.

Speaking of which, Landro's booming voice chimes in. What do we want to do with these? He asks, gesturing to the 3 remaining staff globes still containing black puddings

[Yeah, as long as you take the time to do it. Allikhain's flaming sphere does 2d4 dmg/rnd in 5 ft rad and will last another 15 mins. So between her and Jag they can outpace all the troll regen until they are dead. Jag can actuall move his over all the trolls each round as well]

Landro helps drag the trolls into a pile like a butcher stacking greasy, putrid steaks. If we climb up first, probably. Or we can drop them 80 feet down one of these shafts like the dead end one.

Gur becomes visible, "You like big sticks Landro? I've got here another one for you!" Ke'Sha looks at Landro, "You are very effective with the sword. Do you think you could use the staff globes as weapons? They seem to distract the enemy for a while."

=====================================================
(OOC: Really? A warhammer as a material component? I don't know if to laugh or cry or look shocked in all directions! :) Anyway, I'm sorry. I assume that for Ke'Sha it is possible to carry many warhammers, with his strength and the bag of holding but how does lower level priests are managing?
So since the weight of the hammer has no effect when using bag of holding I assume 60 will suffice? How long in days is a "normal" (one that is not causing madness...) adventure in this level? And I assume 2 per day makes sense...)

[Yeah, warhamner material component. At lower level it's not like people have many castings of it. And at higher level a simple bag of holding is fine. 60x hammers is like 360 lbs and a significant volume, and about 120 gp. You could probably have most of those stored in camp and just keep like 5-10 in your bag, since you likely wont be casting it 5x10 times every few days, right? As far as how many days you plan to be here, it's hard to say. The camp is provisioned for a month or so and there are natural resources beyond that]

Landro looks at the rod skeptically. Not sure releasing more of those in the middle of a melee is a good idea. They are liable to attack anything. Besides, i prefer my sword.

"These bones you want the pudding to crunch are holy tools in the hands of my Lord." Ke'Sha says angrily, "And as such could be useful for us." he adds. Then he looks around... "Want to search the bodies?" he shares Gur senses to look for magical aura on the creatures.

=====================================================================================================
(OOC: Right. So I assume 7 in bag when on adventure. Used 1.
We should check again the slammed door at shaft C and then move to shaft D.
Also, I assume Ke'Sha need to raise new minions to carry his bags. The monstrous zombies didn't prove too effective. What else could Ke'Sha create in a reasonable time and resources beside skeletons and zombies?)

Axid moves around and checks the other party members for signs of damage or any other markings that might be stray pudding or troll gore or anything else odd. "Check yourselves as there is no telling what else might have emerged from below. Pandemonium is not a realm to be taken lightly."

Axid checks but doesn't find any issues with the others. Aside from the undead only Landro was injured in the attack.

If no one objects, Landro will simply drop the pudding-pops down the dead-end shaft (the one that had the magical trap on the ladder rung)
