For the sake of moving things forward, I'll let you guys resolve the matter in this thread, and whatever decision you make will be retroactively applied to the in character thread.

Being completely new to magical things, this helps a lot Jaded, Thanks!

I suppose a broadsword +1 would be fine with Gregeddin, or letting the group get some of these potions might be better. But the point about rarity of the +3 staff spear, especially in the low magic environment could be rather nice. I'm not sure.

+1 Long Sword
+1 Broad Sword

That would be 800, so we still have 1200. Darga could get a magical weapon, and then the rest could be spent on potions.

Ok so Haahqae plans on spending some steel on magic items in the shop, is the steel cost the same as the xp cost for the items listed above?

Then Haahqae will try and learn spells from Sekla's spell book, but I think he's at the max spells he can know with int 14 right now. Does this mean studying the spell book is useless or can I replace spells that I have?

As for the magic item trade, one possibility is:
Longsword +2 (800) (Kendra)
Broadsword +1 (400) (Gregeddin)
Quarterstaff +1 (500) (Darga)
Potion of Heroism (300) (Kendra)

Total: 2000

EDIT: I looked up the potion of heroism finally and this is what it said: grants additional levels to Warriors that drink it, which means in our party it would have to go to Kendra or Kynaston, and we just lost Kynaston, so it goes to Kendra. What it does is grants temperary extra levels depending on the level of the drinker, so the important numbers for us are: 1st to 3rd level drinker = +3 levels. 4th to 6th level drinker = +2 levels.

I didn't see anywhere mention how long it lasts (I imagine 1 encounter), nor if it stacks with itself. However I did see under the potion of super heroism that the latter potion lasted for 5d6 combat rounds, and it made it sound like a potion of heroism lasts longer then this.

No, the steel cost is typically higher and dependent on the merchant's reaction roll with the buyer. If you tell me what he'd like to buy, I can give you the costs Raetmal would use for him.

Hmm...yes, you are right. His INT of 14 means he can only know 9 spells per spell level, and he has 9 first level spells. I'm not aware of any mechanic that lets one 'forget' spells, but I'll look into it.

For reference, though the spells in her book are:
1) Protection from Good, Armor, Read Magic, Magic Missile
2) Stinking Cloud, Scare
3) Monster Summoning I

Unless otherwise stated, all potions have a duration of 1d4+4 turns (a 'turn' being 10 rounds). As for stacking, in 2E drinking multiple potions can have a very random effect--anything from them 'stacking' to canceling each other out to even exploding and possibly killing the imbiber. It's quite a gamble.

hmm, if the cost is higher then I won't be able to afford any of the more interesting items (1k xp items mostly), as I think my total accumulated wealth is around 800 steel.

So with that in mind, let's price check on:

Potion of Invisibility
Potion of Perception
Sling +1
Short bow +1

And I might as well price check gauntlets of dexterity.

Let's see...calculating reaction adjustment...blah, blah, blah...carry the two...and I get these totals:

Potion of Invisibility - 350 STP
Potion of Perception - 350 STP
Sling +1 - 2,300 STP
Short bow +1 - 2,550 STP
Gauntlets of Dexterity - 40,000 STP

By the way, does anyone else want to comment on Haahqae's suggestion for magic item distribution:
Longsword +2 (800) (Kendra)
Broadsword +1 (400) (Gregeddin)
Quarterstaff +1 (500) (Darga)
Potion of Heroism (300) (Kendra)

Because if there are no objections, we can just go with that.

That suggestion is fine with me.

Ok, so I can afford one each of the potions, total cost 700 steel:

So I could pay:
8 pp = 80
616 st = 616
400 cp = 4
Total = 700 steel

Can I also identify the spells on the scrolls without using them up? (While I'm alone in my room at the in preferably.)

A platinum piece is actually worth 5 steel, not 10.

aww, then I'd have to pay:

15 pp = 75
621 st = 621
400 cp = 4
Total: 700 steel

Okay, done deal. Haahqae's encumbrance lessens from moderate to light.

As for the scrolls, two are protection scrolls--Protection from Water and Protection from Fire. Protection scrolls can be used by anyone (even non-casters). When used, they create a circle of magic around the reader that protects them from whatever specific thing the scroll was designed for.

The last scroll has spells on it, so cannot be read unless Read Magic is cast upon it first.

mgbevan, do you have specific dates as to when you are leaving and returning?

Also, any instructions on what you'd like Gregeddin to do while you're gone?

Leave today, back Saturday.

As for Gregeddin, meet up and liase with the group, he's interested in investigation the cult and learning about magic, but doesn't want to go inside the cult taking risks, especially before he has had a chance to heal his wounds.
