I would love to see your castles. There is a real shortage of castles where I come from, although there are several 18th century forts.
I went to Fort Ticonderoga years ago, an 18th century fort built guarding a river valley. Walking up to it from the parking area, I looked at the place thinking how it would look to a footsoldier approaching the place, and I have to tell you, it was ominous.
What struck me most was the earthworks around the place. There is a long slope approaching the wall at about 30-degree angle leading to a dry moat. Inside the moat there is about a three or four foot drop onto a shelf sloping 45-degrees downward and away from you (towards the base of the wall), followed by another drop of about four feet. Anyone approaching the wall would have to climb up the bank, then drop down onto a sloped surface that would cause them to fall forward and drop into a ditch. Just the kind of thing one wants to be doing while exposed to musket fire.

We went to see Fort Ticonderoga on our last trip to the US (10 years ago this summer) and yes, it is impressive. It's a model fort of French Army Engineering, they could follow the ideal plans because they built it from scratch (not fortifying an old place as in Europe). I think I remember reading there that it was defended by 500 against 14 000 or 15 000 attackers.

Here's a weird question: How old is Salia? Or, rather, how old do you guys see her?
There's no wrong answer to the question, I just want to know what you think.
I am asking because I was looking back at the early part of the thread a few days ago, looking for something else, and ran across a reference to her age.
I've been thinking of her, and playing her, as being a different age than that.

Fourteen, fifteen? like the girls taking on a woman's burden in poor countries?

I was considering the conversations Angel has had with her, they are not the words of a 14 year old!

No, they're probably the words of a 45-year-old man who is trying to think of what a 14-year-old girl would say in a given situation.
I described Salia as being in her late teens, but at some point in my head she got younger, like fourteen or fifteen. The thing is, I only know two or three girls of that age, and the ones I know are really capable, well-mannered, smart and mature. So I don't know how old I am portraying Salia.

As I assumed then, Salia is on the verge of adulthood in her society.
Just as information: my grandmother's sisters were born between 1905 and 1915. When they had finished school, at age 14/15, they were sent to better-to-do families to work as help in the household so that they would learn everything about housekeeping they hadn't learned at home, and they stayed at this kind of work until they married. My grandmother was luckier, she was allowed to become a seamstress's apprentice, but she, too, had to start working at 15.

My idea for the rest of the day would be to choose a lodging for the group and bring our belongings there, stabling the horses. Then a LOOONNG stay at the bathouse would be in order (with Angel if she wants to come).
Liri would also write a preliminary report back to Orr's Bay and see if she can get it delivered. She'll also go back to the temple and do a small offering for Hermeus. And she'll talk to everyone in the group about what they know about Daos, so she can set up her farewell words.
- I just noticed I have no notes of money she has, have we ever discussed it? -
