Yeah, she's not going to find Tia (not that it matters, since Areilon is leaving tomorrow and won't be of any help in solving the murders now anyway). But there's a good reason for it; I'm not just being a dick.

I didn't think you were! I will pick it back up when she returns....

:D

Gotta say, I am enjoying this game a great deal.

Ouragana is going to need more than 10 minutes. She will need to rest six hours, minimum, before she can pick a new spell today.

Oh boy... I didn't think she needed to rest before learning a new spell even if the spell in mind had been memorised days ago! I don't read it like that. The PHB states only that the character needs to be rested by a full night's sleep before memorising something. Since Ouragana has not done anything tiring that day, this should be the case. The PHB does not say spells can only be learned in the morning, and that after casting a spell, there needs to be a 8-hour rest before the next one can be learned.

This would restrict the usefulness of mages at low levels even further,, being able to do only one thing every day, and having to decide in advance what spell might be needed during the course of the day, and be stuck with that spell until it's used.

My reading would be that learning a spell works only when the mind is rested by either recent sleep or a quiet day, and the limit number applies to how many spells can be learned in any one day. So a spell not used from the day(s) before can be spent and another one learned and used on a given day if the actions of the day have not been strenuous (no combat, no difficult hike or ride).

Yes, it's not the act of memorizing spells that drains a wizard, it's the act of casting them. So casting a spell, even one memorized days ago, still drains the wizard and so the spell slot cannot be refilled until the wizard has rested.

Now I know again why I never wanted to play wizard.

It's a tough gig, and lots of players avoid them at low level as a result. It's one of my favorite classes, though, personally. I like the challenge. It forces you to be creative, because you only have so many spells per day. But if you stick with it, and gain some levels, the mage eventually becomes the most powerful and versatile class in the game.

I can remember that my favorite character, Daos Soulstaff, went from being able to cast Sleep once a day to becoming head of the Order of Solinari, then the Master of Wayreth...and eventually building his own Tower of High Sorcery on the moon of Solinari itself!

I believe the limitations at low level are the reason that Jerrard was made as a Dual Class Fighter/mage!

To avoid similar game situations in the future: would you allow that a spellcaster does not prepare a spell in the morning right after resting, but waits for the day to unfold and can learn a suitable spell later, given that there has been no strenuous activity and he/she has a calm environment to learn?

Also, do you have some place for me to research what you will accept as cantrips?

Yes, that's perfectly within the rules, so long as the spell slot in question is already empty. If the slot is full, then it first must be discharged, which will then require the wizard to rest again before refilling it. Therefore, you'll have to remember to discharge any spell slots you want empty the night before.

For instance, when Ouragana goes to bed tonight, make a point of saying she will 'waste' her Jump spell before bed. Then, after resting, she can fill that slot whenever she wants to; but it will take 10 minutes per slot, per spell level to do so.

As for Cantrips, my write-up for them is here.

Jenara wrote:Arei heads over to where she saw the blood, motioning to Ourg sher leans down. "I was here, and I saw fresh blood, which is strange in itself as the last murder was a week ago, this was only a few days old." She rubs her head. "Plus someone was watching me."
Brock said the last murder was 'four days ago' here.

Areilon herself confirmed to herself that the last murder was four days ago here, although for some reason still thought the blood was 'fresh.' (I never said the blood was fresh; 'fresh' implies it is a few hours old, at best).

Sorry, my mistake, I rushed the post because of kids! I will review what I have written again.

If I may make a suggestion, in the same way that when dungeon-crawling, it's usually a good idea for one player to map everything out as the party goes--it's also usually a good idea for someone to document all of the clues, suspects (including motives and alibis), leads and unanswered questions while solving a mystery. This helps keep everything straight, because it's very easy to forget some vital clue, or get things mixed up; especially in a play-by-post, where a single quest can take weeks or even months to complete.

That's been my experience, at any rate. I remember once, I was in a play-by-post where one of my party members was killed and another was drained of a level, all because I forgot some important detail until the last minute. Ever since then, I make sure to document everything, but that's just me.

Anyway, just a suggestion, not mandatory or anything.

Arei is taking a walk, not for any game reason, but she fancies a walk.
