Re: Naras' Vignette

After healing herself a bit, Naras casts a spell of silence on the piton, which lets her and Pearl walk through the ropes without making a noise. Nor do they make any footsteps or even breathing sounds. It's actually a little unnerving to be unable to hear your own heartbeat. Once they are past the obstacle, she leaves the piton behind and the two carry on.

Naras ponders the prisoner's strange behavior. While Crizza is sometimes called 'the Mad God' by his opponents, most of his followers aren't insane. There is no reason for the man to have reacted the way he did, as far as Naras can tell. A fanatic might not care if his fellows died for their cause, believing they were righteous deaths--but it wasn't indifference. The man seemed to actually find it amusing. Perhaps he really was mad.

They reach the final chamber. There is a chest in the corner, near some rolled up sleeping bags. In the far back of the room is a crude, wooden throne. A man sits upon it. No, not upon it...he actually sits about a foot off of it. He just floats over the throne, in a sitting position, hovering.

This man looks human, but his skin is blue and his hair is white. He wears purple robes and carries a staff. His hair and robes billow in the wind, but Naras doesn't feel any wind coming from the tunnel. It's as if he's generating his own wind for dramatic effect. He is watching the tunnel entrance so sees them arrive at once. He appears rather bored, though.

"Ah, so you finally arrived. Only two of you? I admit, I'm impressed. You must be skilled indeed to fight your way here. I assume that all 12 of my men are dead then?" he asks almost casually.

OOC: Do Religion (17) or Dwarven Local History (12) give any insight into what this thing is? Or anything else about it? Would Naras know if the wind effect is typical of a Wind Wall? Or whether is 'just' an Air Elelmental type thing? (Dust Devil might just about precurse it). Any informative words from Pearl?

There is nothing in dwarven history that Naras can think of that would be relevant here. Dwarves aren't much for magic, and are more knowledgeable about earth and fire than air.

But her training in religion does remind her of the existence of creatures called genasi or 'plane-touched.' Some say they are blessed by the gods, touched at birth by their divine hands. Others say they are simply the biological offspring of mortals and elementals. It seems clear then, that either way, this man appears to be an Air Genasi or 'Air-Touched.' If so, that might explain the wind effect and the levitation. It is said genasi have an affinity with their element and even some minor control over them.

Pearl just shrugs, having no idea who or what he is.

Naras answers, "Excuse me, but just who are you?" advancing 5-10', but not getting in Peal's line of sight.

She then adds, "And what was all that with Agnas?" advancing another 5-10'.

Once Naras advances 10 feet, the man holds up his hand. "That's enough," he warns. "Unless you want to risk me polymorphing your friend there into a mouse." He grins and Pearl takes a step back fearfully.

"And I will not answer your questions until you've answered mine. It is the least bit of courtesy you can show me, after breaking into my mine uninvited, attacking my people and taking my things."

Naeas answers, "You can count two of us in front of you, yes, but, no, not everyone is necessarily dead. Now, .." and she deliberately moves 5' closer, returning the wind-boy's stare, "..who are you and what was all that with Agnas?"

If there's a hint of spell casting, the dwarf goes for him, spear charge, two handed.

The man laughs, loudly and boisterously, at Nara's defiant attitude and open defiance by moving five feet closer. "Well, I give you marks for moxie. I thought Gontorians were good at doing what they were told, and yet here you are, disobeying blatantly." His smile fades. "Still, not very smart. Again, I repeat, I strongly advise you not move any closer. I've placed several magical traps along the floor. I don't remember which traps did what and where, so you could easily trigger a fireball and bring this whole place down on top of us." His gaze moves toward the spear in her hand. "I'll also point out I've placed nearly half a dozen defensive spells upon my person, as well. So that little sharpened stick of yours won't hurt me any. So put it away--or are Gontorians not as 'civilized' as I've been told?"

He shrugs. "I have no idea who 'Agnas' is and frankly don't really care. As for who I am...you may call me Son of Crizza, for that is what I am. I'll also accept 'Your Worship' if you find that title too cumbersome."

Naras looks him up and down, with a glance at the cieling, tying to get the sense of him, and asks, "So why did your minions kill my friend?"
=========
OOC: This room is 20'x30'? Ceieling height? How stable does the ceiling appear? Does he seems to be telling lies at all? Has Naras heard of "Son of Crizza" [Religion (17)] ?
=========
After listening to any reply from the blue being, Naras says over her shoulder (to Pearl), "What, if anything, have you heard of a 'Son of Crizza' before?"

Naras looks up at the ceiling. It's about 10 feet high or so, she'd judge. The ceiling seems stable enough...a fireball might bring it down, if it was powerful enough. Then again, even if it fails to bring the ceiling down, a fireball could kill her anyway.

Naras has never heard of a Son of Crizza before. As far as she knows, the gods have never mated with mortals, much less produced offspring...but then again, it's not impossible, either. The gods took an oath to not interfere with the mortal world directly, only through their followers. Having a child could be viewed as a violation of that oath...but then again, Crizza isn't known for following the rules as written.

Pearl can offer nothing but another shrug. She has never heard of such a thing, either.

"Oh, the old lady," the Son of Crizza replies. "Right, well they weren't supposed to, really. Just rough her up a bit. But she was quite old and fragile and I guess they went too far. So that's on me, really, I should have warned them to be more gentle with her." He shrugs. "Still, it all worked out well anyway. I'm not actually with the League, I simply...'shanghaied' this cell for my own purposes. My intention was to start a war and you..," he chuckles mirthfully, "...you really helped with that. So I have to thank you. Do you have any idea what the League will do when it discovers a priest of Gonto murdered an entire cell? They'll bring their full force on this town. They'll wipe it from the map!"

OOC: Need a steer here - otherwise we're looking at a new charcter - Assuming Blue-boy is on the level, would Gonto approve of Naras doing herslf in to kill blue-boy (as an arch-enemy of Gonto)? i.e. deliberately set off one or more fireballs (assuming he isnt a bullsh!tter) to try and pull the roof down and kill him

(OOC: Gonto teaches that the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few. So one person sacrificing themselves to potentially save many others? Yeah, she'd be down with that.)

The kohen looks thoughtful, in actuality offering a silent prayer: ~Great Gonto, please guide and protect me in life and forgive and recieve me in death.~
"Well, your worship," (you can hear the NON-capitalisation), if you're really so powerful, you won't mind me trying to match you, hmmm? Oh and Pearl, go and collect things up and take them home. Now."
***
If the genasai appears to be casting or activating a magic staff, Nars will spear charge him, double handed, and be prepared meet her Maker.
If the genasai does not, Naras asks, "But why? What have we done to you?" She thinks ~my only other resouce is Command.~
After, hopefully, keeping the Genasai talking, for a brief while [OOC: 1 or 2 rounds; enough to get Pearl out of range of a Firebball backwash] by encouraging him to expound on how great he is, the and why people should worship him, Naras adds, "I'm feeling left out, so, like you, I want a defensive spell too. Are you really so great that it doesn't matter to you?"
And she starts to cast 2. Resist Fire.

Pearl takes a few more steps back, then spins on her heel and sprints away. The Son of Crizza makes no attempt to stop her, and doesn't much look like he cares, either.
Naras wrote:"But why? What have we done to you?"
He snorts. "In the same way an ant cannot possibly comprehend what a man does, how can a man--or a dwarf, in this case--understand the motives of a god? Even if I explained it to you, your inferior mortal brain wouldn't grasp it. It's not about you, or anyone else. You are thinking in such small terms."
Naras wrote:"I'm feeling left out, so, like you, I want a defensive spell too. Are you really so great that it doesn't matter to you?"
He laughs. "But why? I have no intention of harming you. If I wanted you dead, you'd be dead already. As would your little halfling friend. No, you have become the linchpin in my plan now, whether you intended to or not. I need you to return to the town and warn them of the upcoming war. Tell them, so they can shore up their defenses and be prepared. One side crushing the other won't do; I want a long, prolonged war, after all." He lowers himself onto the throne and then gets to his feet. He then makes a 'shooing' gesture. "Go on, you are free to go. I have an appointment in Mond, anyway, and really must be going."

Once Naras begins praying, Son of Crizza shakes his head. "I tire of your games," he says. "But we will meet again, I'm sure. Perhaps next time, you'll be expendable to my plans." He then, also begins chanting.

Before Naras can finish her spell, he finishes his. He vanishes from sight, leaving Naras alone in the cavern a few moments before she finishes her own spell, protecting her from flame.
