Re: CH. 7: The Viper's Nest
"What do you mean that we will see plenty of action soon enough?" Kendra asks curiously. "And what sort of test do you plan to put me through?"
Re: CH. 7: The Viper's Nest
Tulbas takes a look at the book... "Hmmm... are you all powerful mages?", if he sees no objection he flips through the pages looking for something he might understand. 'They think I''m a child and an inexperienced apprentice at best. It could be an advantage to me.' Tulbas thinks to himself. Then he takes the herbs and starts to grind and mix them. In the meanwhile he tries to learn as much as possible about the serum ingredients and preparation and also searches the shelves for other books and scrolls. "What kind of magic is necessary for the potion? And why each one of you is affected differently?" Tulbas respectfully asks.
==========================================================================
(OOC:
1. Is it possible for Tulbas to recognize lower level spells fit his level without using Read Magic. I mean just recognize the level and not understanding the details?
2. Tulbas works under the assumption that research would take few days. Hope that's the case...
3. Tulbas would try to learn if the effect of the transformation can be made temporary. This can be quiet useful even beyond this specific mission. Also if he can manages it in the current scenario it would be a great advantange having the Belzorites believes he is truely one of them after being transformed, and eventually he will become himself again.
To do that he would try to figure if it is possible to achieve by tempering with the blood samples, the herbs or the spells. He will try to remember & use all he saw both Raetmal and Magnus do in the laboratory even if he doesn't fully understand it. He will also use his herbalism knowledge and if need use blood from the victims to puzzle the wizards. If he can't figure anything, he will try to stall as much as possible (again by tempering with the ingredients).
4. I know research requires high level mage but since the serum was prepared once and there is a lot of written material and assistance here, maybe there is a chance Tulbas can use it.
5. Tulbas will try to lower the mages defenses and maybe even try to learn new spells for the day if he can put his hands on anything he can manage. Having them believe he is weak might help with that. (Seeing the specific three are pretty arrogant they might want to mock him).

"That's the strangest thing. You're the second goblin that I've run into that's had miraculous healing powers.
I feel the same way...Haahque said:
I have no idea why the gods keep on selecting goblins to commune with, personally I think that choice is rather ill advised."
Hopefully there won't be any more gnomes... Grubnick thinks sarcastically to himself.
Re: CH. 7: The Viper's Nest
Haahqae (Masked Dragon Inn, second floor)
Seeming to recognize the name, the innkeeper directs Haahqae upstairs to room 9. After finding the room and knocking, the door opens to reveal Ismene. "Goodness," she says, blinking. "You look like you've been through the meat grinder. Haachoo, wasn't it? Did Raena and Burzan return and do this to you?"
Kendra Greylock (Ivy Inn, Common area)
Mouna chuckles. "Well, there is a war on, if you haven't heard. In fact, we're marching soon on Qualinesti. Very soon. Don't worry, though, we should be able to get you processed before then, hopefully. And for the test, we'll need to see how you handle yourself in battle. I need to know how skilled you are and what sort of training you might need. Do you have a preferred fighting style?"
Tulbas Erogund (Unknown location)
"We are not mages," says the priest with the snake arms. "Only Belzor and Leota are. It is Belzor's magic that allows the creation of the serum, we simply help prepare the nonmagical aspects first."
Try as he might, Tulbas does not understand anything in the book. It's all very advanced. He may be intelligent, but he lacks experience to understand these formulas.
"Everyone is different," says the priest with the flexible spine. "And therefore, everyone is affected in different ways by the serum."
As Tulbas grinds up the herbs, a commotion is heard out in the hall. "What is all of that about?" Leota asks idly. "Remain here. I'll be back shortly." She steps out, leaving Tulbas with his Histachii guards and the priests.
By the time Tulbas finishes with the herbs, Leota returns looking very distressed. "Bring him back to Belzor," she tells the Histachii. "Now."
Without a word of explanation, Tulbas is forcefully brought back into the room where he saw Belzor. There's another acolyte here, one wearing leathers and carrying a bow. He is partially covered in burns. He is speaking to Belzor using hisses.
When they are done, Belzor turns his attention to Tulbas. "Now isss the time to prove your loyalty," he says. "We were jussst attacked. They killed an acolyte and two Hissstachii. But ultimately essscaped. They claimed to be sssearching for you." He points at Tulbas for emphasis. "They are agentsss of the church: a well-dressed human with a broad sssword, a gnome that can change shape, and a goblin priest of the Dragon Queen. You will give me their namesss and where we can find them, ssso my agentsss can hunt them down before they reveal our location to the church. Ssspeak!"
(OOC: It would take a mage of at least 7th level to understand what is in the book. Altering the serum to make it temporary is far beyond his ability, even if it is possible. And even if Tulbas could get his hands on low level spells he can use, he cannot copy them into his spellbook as it is currently locked up.)
Arulia Seroth (323 Three Forks, Seroth residence)
"Not blacksmiths," Niniva says. "Weaponsmiths and armorsmiths. The army is looking for people who can make them new arms and repair their old ones. I wish they were looking for blacksmiths, too, then father could get more work and not worry about the tax hike."
"I suppose I can start dinner early," Vera says, standing up. She mutters something about 'taking her mind off things' and then heads into the kitchen.
"What do you think we should do, Arulia?" asks Cassilda.
Grubnick (Masked Dragon Inn, common area)
Grubnick sits down and takes a look around the common area. There are not many people here compared to other inns, perhaps because it is so expensive. Not including the minstrels and the staff, there are four humans, a half-elf and a kapak.
Three of the humans sit together near the fire, speaking with each other. The half-elf and other human sit at the bar, but neither are interacting with each other. The kapak keeps to himself, sitting in the darkest corner he can find. Kapaks are different from the Baaz that Grubnick has seen at the High Hand. They are fewer in number and considered more elite of soldiers, often used as spies or assassins. This one appears to be off duty.
Felran and Ne-Chanz (High Hand Inn, Common room)
Feeling rather ignored by Felran, the barlad shrugs and leaves to go get Ne-Chanz's water.

Re: CH. 7: The Viper's Nest
"Hi Ismene! It's great to see you again. I trust you're doing well, and so is Arcane. I'm Haahqae by the way, Raena and Burzan did a good number on me a couple weeks ago, but that's all healed now, not this is from my most recent job. We're supposed to find and deal with a hidden cult of Belzorites, but I'm afraid that Tulbas has likely been captured by them, and I took a rather nasty arrow while I was trying to rescue him. By chance I stumbled across a goblin, of all creatures, who patched me up enough so I could walk again, but I fear that I might need some more help to rescue Tulbas and deal with the cult."
"Oh it's been much too long since I've had a chance to talk to you. What have you been up to?"

"I duel wield long swords," Kendra says.
Re: CH. 7: The Viper's Nest
"They were looking for me you say..." Tulbas tries to look surprised, "Well, I know of them... not all of them, but some of them that is. And I think I know of them... not sure." Tulbas says thoughtfully. After a moment he starts speaking hurriedly. "Never heard of the goblin priest or any goblin that knows me for that matter. I also never met a priest in my life... except the priestess of Thakysis... and the three in the back room." Tulbas quickly adds with the slightest of a smile. "But we lost contact few days ago, when the dragons attacked the city. Oh, that's reminds me I met another priest. Verminaard that incinerated Darewind and his believers." Tulbas shudders. "Before that we went on a mission together to kill a hill giant. That's me and the human. The dwarf..." Tulbas stops and asks, "You said a gnome? I was sure he was a dwarf... but one can easily confuse the two I guess... maybe he was one sturdy gnome... Anyway, the gnome wasn't with us. We had other mercenaries with us though, but things got messy... I'd no idea the church had interest in them. In any case I'm not sure they are firends but they meet often, or at least so it seemed. The human I know is called Magnus although he usually doesn't wear fancy cloth. He owns the mageware shop and has some young mage running it for him. The dwa... err.. gnome... is called Darga," Tulbas heart aches when he mention the name and feel sleazy using it to dodge Belzor attack, but on the other hand it seems Darga can save his friends even in the after life. Light hearted again, and realizing he thought of Gregeddin and Haaque as 'friends' for the first time in a long period he continues, "and he stays in different Taverns. Since he meets Magnus a lot you can probably find them both in the shop." Tulbas says. "You can verify the names and the mission we were on as many of the refugees saw us leave town. But alas, our mission didn't end up on good terms between us. Not sure how they tracked me down here, but I certainly don't want to be found by them." Tulbas adds to solidify his reason for telling on his so called friends.
===============================================================
(OOC: Well, hope they will fall for it. Tried to add as many truths as possible to the story and lead them to a deadly trap that would also might trigger Magnus to track them down and so find their hiding place. And if they happen to kill him Tulbas will get his revenge!)

"Not blacksmiths?" ask Arulia. "I'm sure that an army still needs things like horseshoes and buckles and such. But even if you're right, it's not like we have the skill to do the smithing anyway. We do know our way around a smithy, though. I think it's worth a try."
"I think that we should start by visiting the army's weaponsmiths and armorsmiths. It's not late enough for them to go home for the night...maybe we can talk to them yet today." Looking amongst her sisters, she asks, "Will any of you come along? Maybe we can get hired on as a team. Otherwise, I'm sure that mother can use help in the kitchen...and maybe use someone to talk to."
(OOC: If it's not too late in the day, Arulia will go out again with any of her sisters that want to come with and look for the army's smithies. I'd guess that the smoke and soot from them might give her an idea of where to go, but she'll ask for directions if she can't figure it out herself.)

Haahqae (Masked Dragon Inn, second floor)
"Goodness, that is quite a story," Ismene replies. "Tulbas, he was the elven boy, right? Well, I hope he's okay."
As they speak, Arcane slips up to the open door and peeks out, twitching her nose.
"Oh, me? Well, I've been studying and trying to figure out what to do next. I thought about heading back to the Tower, but the roads are pretty dangerous these days and it's a very long trip. But the prices here have really gone up, so I'm not sure I can afford to stay in the city much longer, either. Right now, I'm reading through an old copy of Istar's Tempore Lucis and it...is...just...fascinating. Did you know that the Orders of High Sorcery were first formed right after the Second Dragon War over 3,000 years ago? Also, that there were originally supposed to be seven Towers of High Sorcery, but only five were ever built and now there is only one active one left among them."
Kendra Greylock (Ivy Inn, Common area)
Mouna chuckles. "That's it? A woman of few words, I suppose. Well, can you use any other weapons? Do you prefer heavy armor or light? Who trained you?" She stands up. "Come, you can answer on the way to the old fort. We can give you your test there."
Tulbas Erogund (Unknown location)
Belzor stares down at Tulbas, his slitted eyes narrowed. "The dragonsss attacked the cccity over a week ago, not a few daysss ago," he notes. "It wasss not a dwarf, for dwarvesss cannot ussse magic, and thisss one could turn invisssible and change hisss shape. And we know who Magnusss isss...and thisss man wasss not him. If he wasss, he'd be wearing black, have a nasssty ssscar on hisss face and would not have left any sssurvivorsss. Thisss man fought without magic and with a sssword. I wasss onccce in the Ordersss and I know magesss are not allowed to fight with sssuch weaponsss. You are lying, and badly at that."
Belzor turns away from the young elf. "Lock him up. And have the priessstsss interrogate him. Perhapsss when they are done with him, he will be more willing to tell usss what we wish to know." He turns back to Tulbas. "Their methodsss are not pleasssant, but effective. The ressst of usss mussst prepare to evacuate and defend thisss placcce if need be."
The Histachii grab Tulbas and start to drag him away. If he has nothing further to add, they take him to a storage room and lock him inside. It contains a number of barrels and sacks, a few crates and an old, green rug that is rolled up. There's an old vase, a bear skin rug, and a pile of rags. A dresser contains more brown robes and there is a locked chest in the back.
(OOC: Tulbas attempts to bluff Belzor [TN 11] (1d20): 14, fail.)
Arulia Seroth (323 Three Forks, Seroth residence)
"I'll stay here and help mother then," Niniva offers.
Arulia, Cassilda and Camilla bundle up and head outside. Arulia knew there were two weaponsmiths and one armorer in the city. The armorer and one weaponsmith had shops in the merchant districts. The other weaponsmith lived in the harbor district and was therefore the closest.
"So, we're going to help the bad guys make weapons and armor?" asks Cassilda. "Isn't that...well, bad?"
"Starving is worse," Camilla argues. "Besides, they'll probably use them on the elves, not us."
Grubnick (Masked Dragon Inn, common area)
While Grubnick sits and waits, a barmaid approaches him. She frowns at the sight of him, but whether it's because he's a goblin or he's all beat up, isn't clear. She tries to mask it quickly though and asks politely, "Can I get you something, sir?"
Felran and Ne-Chanz (High Hand Inn, Common room)
The barlad returns with a glass of water for Ne-Chanz and sets it before him. If they ask for nothing else, he departs to help another customer.
"Goodness, that is quite a story," Ismene replies. "Tulbas, he was the elven boy, right? Well, I hope he's okay."

Re: CH. 7: The Viper's Nest
Just an ale, please. he says politely.
Re: CH. 7: The Viper's Nest
"I knew that the order of High Sorcery was old, very old, 3000 years sounds quite possible, given how long elves and some magical creatures live. Meanwhile there were supposed to be seven towers? I had heard of three of them, it's all very interesting that old history, so much happened back then which barely even seems possible these days. I wish there were people like those these days, willing to build new towers of high sorcery and stuff like that."
"I guess I haven't been doing much since the giant, but I'm still living off my share from that, although truth be told, I am trying to find some way to make a little extra cash, there are a few things I would like to buy. But first I'm worried about Tulbas the elf, and I was hoping that you and your great power would be able to help save him. I have no idea what kind of reward there will be for this quest, for you or for me, but I imagine the cultists will have some things that they won't need that we could salvage, and the mage Magnus seems to be fond of Tulbas, I'm sure he'd be grateful towards the ones that saved him.
If you want to go back to the tower, maybe after we could go together. A dangerous journey is safer with a friend by your side, and a long journey seems shorter with someone to talk to on the way."

Kendra quickly finishes off her wine, and then follows after Monna. "I know how to use a bow and dagger too," she says. "Most of my training came from when I was in the holy guard." She wasn't going to tell her that an elf taught her how to duel wield! "Um, I did have a mentor that taught me how to duel wield, but he left the city years ago. As for armor, I tend to like lighter armor. It makes it easier to move."
