Hey, I'm all for women's liberation. I know quite a few female fighters. Typically they are not as big as the guys, so they don't exert the same amount of brute force and physical presence, but they make up for it by being harder to hit.

The way I see it, once the helmet goes on and the weapons come out, "boy" and "girl" go out the window, and are replaced by "fighter".

Yep!

And the best thing is: as equal partners, we can share our strenghts and compensate for each other's weaknesses.

Aye, women tend to fight dirty too! Like Stik said, they're hard to hit and in my experience, they strike pretty fast at times too!

Oh, and Bastian is Right handed and carrying his staff across his saddle, so I figure he's on the right of the wagon.

There are some women fighters in the SCA who are short, even for women, and use that to their advantage.
You see, when I am holding a shield I look over the top of it to see my opponent, and keep my head back about 8-10" from the edge, with the top edge of the shield about 4" lower than my eyes. That means I can see about 30 degrees down angle from my eye-level.
The really short women fighters are short enough that they can actually hide behind my shield, standing in the blind spot created by that 30 degree angle. To see them, I need to either lower my stance by bending my knees, (which impacts my mobility), lower my shield or lean my head closer to it (both of which make my head an easier target to hit), or turn my shield out so that it is more perpendicular to my shoulders, rather than parallel to them (which also makes me easier to hit). A good small fighter working with a spear or pole arm fighter for backup can really ruin your day.

Well, physically, I'm no fighter. I did Karate for some time (many years ago), but never progressed far enough to do freestyle fighting. But there's a story from that time I'd like to tell.

My thentime boyfriend and I were waiting at a lonely bus stop one night when a guy with a sizable club (like a baseball bat, but taken from the wood behind us) came up to us and asked if we could give him the money for a bus ride. Well, we were not going to take our wallets out in that kind of situation, but we had a day ticket for up to five people and said he would be welcome to share our ride. I stood behind my boyfriend, a 6 foot guy with stocky build, my hands on his shoulders.

The stranger kept toying with his club, and my boyfriend, a little nervous, said: "You know, my girlfriend here is doing Karate." I cursed him inwardly because I knew I really didn't know much, and this was likely to spur the guy on. And rightly, he gave me an "Oh, really?" look. So I drew myself up to my full height of 5'5'', stepped a little to the side to have a clear way towards him, and said: "If you're going to lift that club against us, my foot is going to connect with your balls."

Not that I would have done that, the target area being much too small for a secure hit. Instead I planned to use the advice our sensei had given when faced with an armed opponent: Don't look at the weapon, go for the body while they swing it.

Apparently, I was convincing enough. The guy let the club drop by his side and was docile enough after that, attempting friendly chatter as we waited for the bus and rode into town.

Quick heads-up, folks: I'll be on vacation the second week of August (8/6 to 8/14). As I will be in a tent in the hills of western Pennsylvania, I do not expect to have access to the internet or email during that time (although stranger things have happened).

Angel is having an minor episode isn't she? Its what I am trying to portray, someone who is not losing the plot, but....

All this is freaking her out, she like Magnus is expecting something to happen, all these shadows and they like are messing with her mind.

Have a great time, Stik (or do I have to say Sir Nicholas?).

For me, vacation time will be from 8/20 to 9/4. First week practising and hopefully increasing my mountaineering skills, second week passing them on to our nephew. His parents are both afraid of heights and he isn't, so we've booked a holiday appartment in the foothills for all the eight of us and we'll take the little one (he's four) up. And I'll take wool with me to make the gambeson for my son I've promised to make.

Okay, I've been thinking: the type of conversation that it about to occur between Maughus and Bastian is the type that could literally take weeks to play out over PBMB, as we go back and forth.
In the interest of time, and to avoid some of the back and forth, I'm asking that Ish send me a PM with a list of the questions Bastian intends to ask, and the information he is looking to obtain. It would also be helpful to provide a few contingencies - "if A, then B" sort of thing. That way, I can put together one longish post with the results of the conversation rather than a dozen short posts.
If the discussion should take an unexpected turn, we can do another round of PM/posted response.

And if anyone has anything to add to the topics of discussion, please let Ismaels-Legacy know so that he can include it in his PM.

Stik, you are a bad bad man. You're making me nervous. This is going to end with my poor elven character's guts all over the ground in front of a nameless horror from some half forgotten legend.
