Jocelyn rubs at her forehead and sighs. "Someone is going to have to trigger the trap at this point," she says.

Drav says, "I have a grappling hook"

(OOC: How much damage would it do? Also, is the RSW 14 (+2 reflex) = 16, or is it just saying I got a bonus 2 that made 14?)

"And I have an iron pot," Brock pipes in. "What good does any of that do for us?" he asks.

An examination of the trap reveals that it's the door handle itself that is trapped, and any attempt to turn it will trigger the trap.

Jocelyn was starting to look a little impatient at this point. She inches a little closer to the door as if she was the one ready to trigger the trap. "Well, someone do something, otherwise I'm going to do it," she says. Baeros' charm was seemingly rubbing off.

"If we open the turn without turning the handle, the trap shouldn't spring." Dahn says as he walks away from the door.

"What if we tied a rope to the handle and sat behind a corner, then trigger the thing." Drav says, "Then we shouldn't get hit by any spikes..."

The Phoenix
The Eagle

"All of you get as far from the door as possible. I'll first try to shoot few arrows at the door knob and if that won't work I'll try to break it open without touching the handle." When everyone gets back Baeros tries to shoot few arrows at the handle. If nothing works he rushes to the door trying to force it open by bashing it with his shoulder.

===========================================================
(OOC: I don't roll for hit since I assume eventually Baeros will hit. About forcing the door open... (1d20 = 19) damn, failed on the first attempt. (1d20 = 17) Damn! why my hit rolls aren't that high?!? (1d20 = 16) Jesus! (1d20 = 2) Well forth time is a charm.
So I guess I've to roll a saving throw too... pity I wasted the high rolls on breaking the door! :evil: (1d20 = 15) whoo hoo... saved. :)

Baeros fires a couple of arrows into the door, but this accomplishes little. So he then backs up, gets a running start, and throws himself at the door. He strikes it with a heavy thud, but the door does not budge. However, it does trigger the trap. But the momentum tosses him backwards, away from the spikes that come sliding out around the door, sparing him from any danger.

=========

Baeros makes an open doors check [10] (1d20): 19, fail. The trap is triggered.
Baeros makes a RSW save to avoid the trap [13] (1d20): 15, pass. He avoids all damage.

(OOC: According to the rules, you can only try to force open a locked door once and if you fail, further attempts won't work. So he triggered the trap, but the door is still closed and locked.)

"I will give it a try" Val offers

skill check/break doors (1d20=17, 1d100=17)

Wow, what are the odds of that

"There must be a mechanism to reset the trap, and to disable it" Ouragana offers. "Perhaps we can find it?" She starts looking around for clues, using her intelligence and the experience with mechanical things she has gained in the dealings with the Clockwork Horrors.

INT roll:1d20=6

As Baeros staggers back from the door he sneaks a look around and quickly says, "The stones here are misaligned, together with the momentum I missed the door by an inch." he then looks at Jocelyn, "At least you don't have to worry about getting spiked." he smiles.

===============================================================
(OOC: I know it is never good to argue with the DM but before posting the message I looked at the players handbook and here is the quote:
2nd Ed. Players Handbook wrote:Open Doors indicates the character's chance to force open a heavy or stuck door.
When a character tries to force a door open, roll 1d20. If the result is equal to or less than
the listed number, the door opens. A character can keep trying to open a door until it
finally opens, but each attempt takes time (exactly how much is up to the DM) and makes
a lot of noise.
Numbers in parentheses are the chances (on 1d20) to open a locked, barred, or
magically held door, but only one attempt per door can ever be made. If it fails, no further
attempts by that character can succeed.
So I figured I can continue trying to open the door. Although seeing the spikes jumping would make even Baeros think again about running to the door a second time. :)

Val attempts to kick down the door, but she has no better luck than Baeros, especially with the spikes in the way.

It occurs to Ouragana that the Wyvern must have had a way to bypass the trap when he was moving about the mansion. The most obvious solution is he had a key. If the door is unlocked, it's very likely the spikes will retract. The keyhole for this door is not covered by the spikes, so someone with a lock pick could try and unlock it. That seems to be their best bet.

=========

Val makes an open doors check [8] (1d20): 17, fail.

"I guess that is probably the only good thing about this situation," Jocelyn says to Baeros. "If we can't get past this one door, then we are screwed."
