CH. 9: Winter is Coming

This 2E Dragonlance game is set in the city of Haven, during the War of the Lance. Haven is a city undergoing great upheaval. First massive numbers of refugees pour in, then the city is conquered by a draconic army. Can our heroes survive under this dark occupation?

"Oh, she was the one that tried to kill me after we killed the giant. Right, I remember her now. Yeah I don't like her either. I mean she did try to kill me and all. I think they mentioned that they were hired by the local cult at that time. I have no idea why Darewind wanted us dead, we were nothing but utterly extra special respectful towards him and we even were allowing him to take some of the credit for killing the giant when we were doing all of the dirty work ourselves. But we hired help from Darewind's followers, including Raena and Burzan, and those two decided to try and kill us afterwards. But it wasn't all bad, we also got some very good help from Darewind's followers, some who are pretty and smart and inelegant and also amazing. But I digress. Darewind got killed when he tried to resist the dragon army so I figured Raena would forget about us, so I forgot about her. Until now."

"Why does this have to happen now? First I nearly die twice in a week then I get robbed now Raena's back to kill me again. Or she's back again to kill me, she didn't quite finish the job the first time, thankfully enough. Stupid Magnus was no help, when he saw us being attacked he just left us to our fate. I'd love to help you deal with Raena and Burzan, but I really don't want to run into that pair today. Are you trustworthy?"

"I don't think the prefect has any intention of doing anything cruel and heartless while holding a party," Kendra points out. "And my goal isn't to kill him, but to understand him," she explained with a sigh. "I need to learn what he is hiding, and that means that I'm going to need to cozy up to him," she said. She didn't exactly look thrilled with the idea of flirting with whoever the prefect was, especially with her husband around. "I purposely bought a dress that would make me stand out. If I happen to disappear for a little while though, do you think you can cover for me?"

"To my friends? Utterly," replies Shima. "You don't have to deal with them today. Provided you keep what I've just told you to yourself for now, at least, and manage to get your group to include me in their activities, Raena and Burzan will think I'm infiltrating. But if you don't want to do things that way, I understand. I'd say I can string Raena along for maybe a week or something. She thinks I'm incredibly thick."

Tulbas follows Gregeddin instructions and goes outside calling Gobax as he does so. Once outside he asks him, "So... how long are you in this business?" making sure his words won't surrender them as heretics.

"That's a lot to ask for," Arulia whispers. "From what I hear, I don't think the Dragon Queen or her armies want any competition, and they'll likely kill any who worship other gods. I think that finding one who does won't be the hard part, it will be getting one to trust you enough to reveal herself...er, or himself." She nervously looks around again. "But I do know of them. I've listened to the old legends, and I believe in them. If the Dragon Queen is real, then so must the other gods in the legends. But not all of them are good, and not all of them are likely to work against Her, either! Still, maybe I can tell you what you want to know." She stops, struck by a thought. "Why are you looking for the old gods, anyway?"

"Oh good, I've run into too many non-trustworthy people recently. You don't have to worry, I'm quite good at keeping secrets. The group I was just with was going to accompany me in investigating a secret base in an abandoned building that might have a dangerous renegade in it. Did you want to tag along as part of that infiltrating us thing?"

"No chance you've heard of Yvette or Xyleena is there? They're a couple of the non-trustworthy people I've found recently."

"Well, if you don't keep this secret, our secret, I'm probably as good as dead. And also someone might work on robbing you that you don't know about. I'll totally trust your judgement in this. If you need to tell your friends, it's ok. But I've heard that the more people know a secret the chances of it remaining a secret become really low. Yes, yes, I would really love to tag along. Especially if it gets me out of this miserable city. I hope it ends up paying enough to cover the taxes for carrying one's own weapons in and out of the city though. In all honesty, I'm nearly broke," the dwarf spurts out, wonderfully relieved to find someone so marvelously receptive. He adds, "And I'd be absolutely delighted to hear your tales of adventures past, and buy you drinks all the while - but it would have to be from proceeds from me 'tagging along.' As I said, my monies are falling rather low. Nowhere near starving, but really quite poor, considering the taxes around this city. Oh, and when you've got time, I'd love to see your juggling. Something I've always wanted to be able to do, but never found anyone that was any good at it."

Shima scratched his beard, then continued, "I seem to be talking even more I usually do. Must be the wonderful company. Anyway, to answer your question, I've never heard of Yvette or Xyleena, If it's something I can help with, I'd be willing to try. Also, your friends might think I'm shady or something, well not Arulia, she's been kindof nice. If it means I have to take point or something just to prove myself to them, then I'm ok with that." He shut up, mouth dry from all the talking.

The bard steps through the doorway to find the two conversing, apparently they didn't hear the door, he clears his throat butting into the conversation.

"Excuse me, but we're off and your presence is required Haahqae, we still have business to attend if you'd be so kind. And as you can imagine your skills are rather pivotal so can this meeting take place on the road? That is if you are joining us?" the bard concludes addressing this new person

"Me? I'd be delighted, thank you.. Especially if that's a road out of this city. My kit's in the posh inn, the High Hand, up just along the way though..." Shima replied.

Kendra Greylock (2527 Market Street, Greylock's Gorgeous Gems)
Norris takes a moment to think about it, pacing for a moment. Finally, he turns to her and says, "I suppose the best way to keep you out of trouble is to go with you then. I have an outfit that will do nicely. Come get me when it's time, and I'll close up shop and get ready."

Tulbas, Arulia, and Gobax (Steel Tankard Inn, Common area)
Tulbas steps outside, calling Gobax to join him.

The young woman speaking with Arulia counters with her own question. "Why are you looking for those two women?"

"They stole money from me and my companions," Arulia replies. "We were all hired on as guards, and when we finally got our reward, Yvette and Xyleena took all of it for themselves. By the time we realized what they had done, they were gone long enough to disappear."

A few years, which may not seem that long to you but for a race with about half the lifespan of most humans... Grubnick shrugs. I met a Dwarf and he taught me the way... I helped him out of a rough situation... How did you end up at your current errand... for the church?

Kendra looks surprised for a few moments before she smiles lightly. "I didn't expect that," she admits before she hands him the dress. "Would you would put that away for me. I'll come get you when it is time," she says. She then leaves to finish her patrol.

Gregeddin holds open the door motioning for them to leave. "We're meeting the others outside now. Let's use the walk to figure out if you're the kind of person who we can count on or the kind that I'll find putting a knife in our backs. We're staying in the city so you won't need your kit,and... "the bard ads dryly , "if you are the knife kind I'd rather be the one holding the knives." patting the leather armour on his chest, to make his suggestion quite obvious.
