Imani looks over her shoulder to Ulster, and gives him a small smile and nod before she carefully makes her way out into the clearing. She remains on alert, with her hands resting on her scimitars.

Babushka watches Imani, holding the (limp, I suppose) fungus staff in her hand.

Jerrard keeps close, keeping Locky from running off.

"We'll wait here then." Locky says with a shrug, "Let me cover her with my Hoopak at least?"

Babushka nods. "Good idea. Ranges weapons out, then." (She doesn't have any)

"Take my bow." Jerrard says softly, removing it from his shoulder, "Take it for now, I have my spells." Reluctantly he lets go of Locky.

Locky moves to the edge of the clearing, watching Imani but not moving, she wedges her Hoopak in the ground and gets ready to aim.

Babushka accepts Jerrard's bow and quiver. She puts the quiver upright onto the ground between her legs and strings the bow. The fungus staff stays next to the quiver.

Imani approaches the center of the clearing, alert and ready to strike, like a coiled viper. When she gets close enough, she can visually confirm that there is a ring in the tall grass. There are other treasures, as well--what appears to be a sword, some armors, and other such items.

However, without warning the items suddenly sink into the ground itself. Barbed tentacles burst from the ground, waving and thrashing wildly. A strange, black octopus-like creature emerges from the sands, with a body at least twenty feet in size.
Babushka, at least, recognizes the tentacles as belonging to a wyndlass--as she feared.

"Giant bloated earth-lashers?! The surface be more fun than I expected!" Fikod waits for a clear shot at the bulbous creature's body before he lets loose with his bolt then tucks forward into a combat roll stalking toward the beast to close what distance he can.

Imani's eyes widen as she looks up at the wyndlass. "Everyone, try to avoid the tentacles!" she cries out over her shoulder to the others. She knew this had to be some kind of trap because people just didn't leave armor and swords in the middle of a clearing for no good reason. Quickly, she starts dancing around the creature, striking it when she can, so she can avoid the tentacles.

Jerrard let's loose magic missiles from his hand streaming at the creature.

1d4+1=4, 1d4+1=4, 1d4+1=4 12 damage.

"That's what nearly killed me!" Babushka shouts, then picks up the quiver and runs a few dozen feet to the left to get a clearer shot at the wyndlass's body. she fires one arrow, but her aim is poor and she misses.

Jerrard intones the necessary chant to discharge a trio of magical missiles. They fly from his fingertips and each strike the creature, causing it to shriek in anger and pain.

After announcing she recognizes the creature, Babushka veers off to the left and firing her bow. The arrow sails overhead, hitting a distant tree instead. A pair of songbirds leap out of their nest and fly off, terrified by the sudden intrusion.

Having been given no orders, Ulster and Thuskar both act as they normally do in battle. Ulster, the picture of caution, carefully approaches the creature slowly, his shield raised. Thuskar, of course, charges with a battle-cry. He swings his sword overhead, slashing downward with a powerful blow with his great sword. The wyndlass, severely wounded, begins lashing with its tentacles wildly.

Amused by the sight of the bizarre creature, Fikod fires his crossbow at it, but the creature's flailing tentacles deflect the bolt, knocking it aside. He then rolls forward, getting closer to the creature.

Imani quickly lashes out with her scimitars. Her first blade is deflected by the creature's thrashing tentacles, but she manages to get in a good strike with her second one. Despite her best attempts to evade the creature, the ten tentacles--which are twenty five feet in length and covered in sharp barbs, easily manage to wrap around her and Thuskar. Both get ensnared by five tentacles each, causing them both considerable pain. Neither can move, and struggling seems to hurt even more.

Finally, Locky throws a stone she had found on the ground, but it just bounces off the creature's thick hide without so much as a bruise.

Wyndlass attacks Imani with its first cluster of tentacles (1d20): 17, ensnared; Imani suffers (1d10+10): 14 damage. Wyndlass attacks Thuskar with its second cluster of tentacles (1d20): 11, ensnared for (1d10+10): 20 damage.

(OOC: Both Imani and Thuskar are ensnared. They cannot make any actions other than to try and break free--this requires a successful Bend Bars check each round until successful.

Imani lets out a small cry as the barbs from the tentacles pierce into her skin. It doesn't stop her from struggling to get free though.
