Out of Character discussion

The 2E AD&D Homebrew Sandbox world of Genwald is large, ancient, and magical. There are many undiscovered/untamed places. The Sun Kingdom (European style, Late Medieval Human NG Monarchy) is the basic Campaign area, but PCs can end up anywhere.

The scars of ancient battles of titanic proportions mark the land. Wild magic zones, fantastical terrain, grand adventure, political strife, and even artifacts of wonder await. Choose your part and come make your mark on the world. A wide array of unconventional races and classes are available.

One square is 5' wide.

-Narrow halls 5’ wide can be easily traversed by any medium or smaller creature in armor.
Large creatures must divide their movement by 3, and lose all AC dex bonuses when moving through.

-Open areas where only two corners are connected can only be easily passed by small creatures
wearing armor no bulkier than hide.

During combat: Slender, Medium creatures (elves, feliz) in leather, studded lea
or not in armor can squeeze through, but lose any dex bonus to AC that round.
Medium creatures in anything heavier than Std leather can spend a 1d2 rounds (losing dex bonus to AC).

Large creatures cannot pass.

Then head over to see what Van is looking at.
Katten asked to leave one alive. The player might not, but the PC would remember, it was only a couple of minutes ago

Oh I have an idea.

It never got tied up, and he doesn't know anyone here yet, so I doubt he would be inclined to babysit it.

Anyway funny solution, since everyone took off every which way.

Yeah but he's a human lol he might be on their side. He's also not a fan of the splitting up. Used to working with his patrol squad.

Yep, she was going to talk to it... then when he returned from taking a peak down a hallway she was gone... and there are probably a few more hundred goblins in the place.

Plus he doesn't even know where she went... lol

30 odd years of gaming, never had a DM make those roll for me.
Same principle as a rogue searching for traps. How would he know if he missed one or not?

It's even in the "Example of play" from the phb

[Excerpt]
Fighter 1: Hmmm. This is obviously a marker of some sort. I want to check this area for secret doors. Spread out and examine the walls.

DM (rolls several dice behind his rule book, where players can't see the results): Nobody finds anything unusual along the walls.

Fighter 1: It has to be here somewhere. What about the ceiling?

DM: You can't reach the ceiling. It's about a foot beyond your reach.
[/Excerpt]

The rogue rolls are specified in the class description as being made by the dm also

Even so-> could be played through. Meta at the table never happened with my groups. Even the Acquisition Incorporated crew (Editor Supreme Chris Perkins DMs them) rolls their own Move Silent and play through as if they made it or play oblivious that they didn't.

A player can make the roll, know they failed, but still play their move IC. Can be humorous at times.

I have no problem with you rolling them; will let let you know what I want to do and when ;)
Low rolls make things more interesting!

The idea is that the player doesn't know if they find something or no, so meta gaming usually isn't even a possibility. (Move silently:hide in shadows is another story, but even with move silently, if they fail, they will likely hear the noise they made and know they failed, it's impossible to roll a 95, and not know you made a racket...)

Straight from the PHB:

"Move Silently: A thief can try to move silently at any time simply by announcing that he intends to do so. While moving silently, the thief's movement rate is reduced to 1/3 normal. The DM rolls percentile dice to determine whether the thief is moving silently; the thief always thinks he is being quiet. Successful silent movement improves the thief's chance to surprise a victim, avoid discovery, or move into position to stab an enemy in the back. Obviously, a thief moving silently but in plain view of his enemies is wasting his time.

Hide in Shadows: A thief can try to disappear into shadows or any other type of concealment -- bushes, curtains, crannies, etc. A thief can hide this way only when no one is looking at him; he remains hidden only as long as he remains virtually motionless. (The thief can make small, slow, careful movements: draw a weapon, uncork a potion, etc.) A thief can never become hidden while a guard is watching him, no matter what his dice roll is--his position is obvious to the guard. However, trying to hide from a creature that is locked in battle with another is possible, as the enemy's attention is fixed elsewhere. The DM rolls the dice and keeps the result secret, but the thief always thinks he is hidden."

I know what's in the PHB... I'd estimate that 95% of DM's let the players roll... I'm not playing a thief - but playing themselves advocate here - players like to have some control over the dice that shape their destiny.
