Sinister Secret of Saltmarsh (This is the Game Thread)

Desolate and abandoned, the evil alchemist’s mansion stands alone on the cliff, looking out towards the sea. Mysterious lights and ghostly hauntings have kept away the people of Saltmarsh, despite rumours of a fabulous forgotten treasure. What is its sinister secret?

(Echo is going to let the warriors go first, and then she'll stay in the back. She only has one spell left, so she has to make the most of it.)

Searos is restored to his full hit points 2d4+2=7, Gunter to 16 of 19.

Kim turns to Brax. "I have a potion of healing, too. Do you want it? If we are to proceed, then we'd better be as strong as we can."

"That would be appreciated. The pain is quite bad." she comments as she leans against a bed. "However it might be better to save it till we find out what we encounter."

Vee walks next to Gunter, grumbling something ununderstandable.

Amon raises an eyebrow at the drow's behavior. She had already admitted she had a potion of her own, but she refuses to drink it or accept Kim's. It was almost as if she were just milking her injury for some reason.

Turning his thoughts away from the priestess, he addresses the group. "I don't suppose anyone has any lamp oil, do they? I remember my sister-in-law once telling me this story of how she cleared out an entire basement of giant rats by igniting lamp oil and then throwing it down. It apparently makes for quite an effective blast."

Searos tips back the healing potion, tests his arm out and then draws his new, clearly artifact level broad sword and stands behind Gunter and Vee. "Well thats better. I'll just stand behind you two and let you go first."

(ooc: My bad, I thought Brax's potion had be used already, she did not wish to waste the last one.)

"Actually, you may be right. I did not wish to waste the last one. I am taught to protect the lives of others, at the cost of my own." Reaching into her pouch she retrieves her own potion.

(2d4+2=5 5 Hp back, double figures again! Yay)

"Pelor has shown me a brief glimpse into the future, just few moments, yet it might be helpful." She says as they prepare, "I have seen Gunter walk though the door and see the darkness behind, he descends a slippery stair, with extinguished torches in brackets along the walls. He comes to a fork in the road, and turns left, torches line the walls once more. Before him is a barricade soaked in some form of liquid, perhaps they have had the same idea as you Master Amon.." She lowers her head, "That is all that I have seen, possibly a great vision, possibly not."

"And Amon, I have a Lantern and oil, if you need some." She says with a smile.
" Kid never learned to clear a room. Doors and corners, I told him. Doors and corners."

Amon nods. "All right, give any flasks of oil you carry to Kim then, and she can take my torch, too, to light them with. I'd take them myself, but I still have one spell left to use, and...well, I'm a terrible aim, to be honest," he admits with a slight blush. "My brother always said I couldn't hit the broad side of our manor if I was five feet away."

"I'm sure you have other qualities" Kim says, accepting the torch from Amon and the oil from Brax.

Kim opens the secret door for the others to pass, Gunter and Vee in front. They only can see as far as the torchlight of Kim's torch goes. The door opens to a passage through the base rock of the cliff, which seems mostly natural, but equipped with wooden stairs because it is to steep to be navigated safely without. The walls are slippery with water, and the well-used but maintained stairs are slippery as well. There is a bracket with a torch in sight, but it is unlit.

(ooc: please specify the marching order, Gunter and Vee in front, then Searos, but after him? Where is Brax, Echo and Amon? KIm is holding the door and will follow last)

Amon blinks at Kim, completely unable to discern whether she is being sincere or is mocking him. For a moment, he considers asking...but decides instead he may be better off not knowing.

===========

(OOC: How about:

Gunther/Vee
Searos/Brax
Amon/Dogmeat
Echo/Kim

This leaves our six vulnerable, but I doubt we need to worry about rear attacks. We pretty much cleared out the whole mansion. Amon should stay near the melee characters, so he can cast a protection spell if needed. Echo can cast Sleep and Kim can chuck burning oil from the back. Sound good?)

The party goes down the stairs that extend towards their left, beyond the light of Kim's torch, which is held high. The torchlight radius just allows Gunter and Vee to see where they're going.

There are torches in brackets along the wall, but they have been extinguished.

The stairs are wet and, after about 30 feet, end on an uneven, rocky, slippery landing before continuing to the right. In the meagre light, the passage is a challenge to the party's dexterity. Gunter slips as he puts the first foot on the landing and falls hard on his backside, he can just avoid knocking his face into his shield. Amon somehow gets a foot caught in his robes, knocks sideways into the corridor wall and slides down a few steps. He is otherwise unhurt.

Gunter makes a DEX check, 1d20=18, fail
Veelayana makes a DEX check, 1d20=2, pass
Searos makes a DEX check with a +2 bonus, 1d20=4, pass
Brax makes a DEX check with a +2 bonus, 1d20=5, pass
Amon makes a DEX check with a +4 bonus, 1d20=15, fail
Dogmeat is on four paws, he has no problems
Echo makes a DEX check with a +6 bonus, 1d20=6, pass
Kim makes a DEX check with a +6 bonus, 1d20=12, pass

At the end of the second flight of stairs, the party can gather in a small cavern with two exits. The one to their left has the line of unlit torches continuing. Just at the limit of their torchlight, there might be a crude barricade. The passage to their right has no torches. It seems to open into a larger cavern.

Amon quickly gets to his feet, flushed with embarrassment. He had always been something of a klutz, but was glad to see he wasn't the only one to lose his footing, at least.
