Re: Out of Character discussion
Ohhhhh this is priceless... I can just picture Van, as a goblin, running screaming wildly past Garroth who sees a goblin and kills him...

So you're proposing to risk your neck for the benefit of alerting the goblins that they're about to be attacked in advance of attacking them and thereby give up our sole advantage?Sol Mazer wrote:Van will tap his staff a bit, thinking. Then say,
"I already gave him his purse... How about this... Teach me the goblin word for 'help!' I'll use an illusion to make myself look like this bugger. I'll run in screaming 'help' as a goblin and maybe draw some out into a pace where we can pick off a few. I'll just go right through the bunch, or off to the side. Eh? That might be a way to even the odds a bit."
The High Elf raises an eye brow, "Thoughts?"
My honest thoughts are that at best this is poor tactics and verging on stupidity.
If you could use it to infiltrate and actually assassinate the leader, then it becomes good.

All of the above. Van is not combat seasoned at all. Staff proficiency? C'mon now!
I would have done it more for a table laugh for me- but it represents what Van contributes and would do. And give him a chance to dodge Gar's sword! I know I'd be trucking past him =^)
While I love all my characters, I would gladly throw each of them into a wood chipper to play as true as possible. Aus is running a game with one of my guys- good game, love my guy, but he's a goner if a situation calls for him to play true.

Re: Out of Character discussion
If a campaign is for laughs, typically slapstick, then that (table laugh) is completely fine.
If it's IG appropriate humour then that's also fine in a more measured, serious game.
In the latter (more measured, serious game) then something played to amuse a player, i.e. not IG humour, then that can be inappropriate due to disrupting other players' enjoyment.
Just saying so that you can be fully aware of impact.

Re: Out of Character discussion
Good to know- and something for all to consider. I've been doing this a long time and enjoy table camaraderie more than the game at times. And while we are not at a table, I believe there is always room for some humor in play as it relates to the backstory/ story (like Van turning himself into a Elf-Goblin).
If this is a group more inclined for a serious play through IC, then I may not be best suited for it. Van will continue to be daft as his backstory doesn't include combat. If any have been distracted by my portrayal, I regret that- I am trying to run a character that has to learn the hard way what it is like to be "on the road." .... And still have a good time doing it =^)
What's the mood of the group? Or, which of the three from Chris' post above applies the most here? Let me know if there is a decorum you're all used to playing in. [It's the first one, right?... No? Really?]

Re: Out of Character discussion
I'm typically good with ooC humour, in game humour depends on the character I'm playing.
This guy is a stark contrast to my Kender. So don't take my in-game seriousness for me being a serious person.
Also I think a game can only be as serious as the characters in the game. I mean the Kender is in the demiplane of dread... fight werewolves in a nightmareish story, but he is still being a Kender.
Just like you are being a flippant youth of wealth off on a grand adventure. And well once Squirrellord is done his character we will see how serious the mood is.... lol

Re: Out of Character discussion
'Elf-goblin' is fine if supports sound tactics.
Ok, not ignoring your question but it's probably best if someone else answers that so that you get a balanced view.
One personal anecdote that shows my bias: I played in a tabletop campaign that lasted over 3 years (4 hours once/fortnight) and we were sneaking up on some very hard foes and one of the players whose PC was not at the front thought it would be funny to shout "We're coming for you" (IG). Absolutely no IG reason to do so and not consistent with any previous IG character trait. Result was 3 PCs die. I saw no humour IG. One of the players (with dead PC) shrugged while the other two were upset. The player of the 'funny' PC didn't feel any responsibility. I have chosen to not play in any subsequent game in which that player is involved.
Noct, your Kender is played with a consistent and believable personalty.
Can be IG annoying, funny too, but mostly consistently OOC highly entertaining.
The key is that you deliver the humour in a natural and non-forced way just as a skillful actor would in a play.

Re: Out of Character discussion
Thanks.
Well so far the elf goblin would fit with this story, and Van is just building his rapport with the group.
But I definitely see where you are coming from with the whole "We're coming for you!" Out of the blue I would say that is pretty annoying/frustrating.
Also if we can kill these damnedable goblins we might even get a smile from Katten. Once we are celebrating around the fire.

Re: Out of Character discussion
Early days but here's how it feels to me (as Linar):
==> embryonic rapport with the minotaur that could turn into a good friendship.
==> professional respect for the skill and tactics of the cat-lady
==> annoyance at Sol's talkalot-elf who despite having genius intellect and having been asked nicely (and more forcefully) about 5 times to be quiet (including why) consistently failed to grasp the concept.
==> noted the consideration of 'clanky elf' (yes, yours, Noct) for holding back so as to not spoil elven surprise
==> nothing noted for any others as yet.
Feedback welcome but not mandatory.
