Re: ** Part I: Fire and Ash **
[Missed that there had been an edit. Sorry to keep everyone waiting]
Thanks. Idrys says to the bandits. I'll think it over, but I've got a lot of business to take care of before I can consider taking a regular job.
When Karlene begins doling out tasks and advice Idrys keeps an eye out for any potential threats coming from the doors and windows. Once she winds down he twirls the swords casually as she counts down, eager to be on the move; working in tandem with his sister.

Re: ** Part I: Fire and Ash **
Tranth and Yarick nodded affirmatively to Karlene, and after the brigands provided Idrys information indicating a hideout in the heart of Direwood, Idrys was confident he could locate that place after gaining better insight and details. After all, his foster father had raised him not too far aways from Direwood and he had some childhood adventures once before there while growing up. According to Tranth's account the hideout is in a series of earthen caves beneath the Hills of Heathen, which lies within the forest.
The two guardsmen got you both past many black cloak soldiers, all of them fending off brigand skirmishers who died easily at the skilled swordsmanship of black cloak steel.
You find yourselves entering into a thick dense forest, that blots out the heat of Scarlor’s twin suns. You note there are animated vines at the base of these trees, they slither and wrap around your fingers or hands harmlessly yet make no hostile gesture. However these same vines, if they bore any sentience at all were not very fond of Tranth or Yarick who were stung by the vines as though they were serpents.
Fury detects a group of brigands hiding in the trees ahead, perfectly blended with the surrounding foliage and waiting for any unsuspecting person to come along and run afoul of their ambush kill zone. There are twenty of them, mostly armed with shortbow and daggers, some better equipped have light crossbow or shortswords (approximately 1.5 mile ne of your current position give or take)
Tranth says ‘we’re not leaving just yet, girl, you said you would help us take down the dwarf master. You’ll get paid, if that’s your worry. Besides, the two of you aren’t gonna survive for very long out here by your lonesome. What says you?’
Before either of you could answer him, a whirring sound whose origin you could not determine alerted you something was afoot. A flying sword took Tranth's head clean from his shoulder and flew back to the grasp of a charging rider, who you could tell was female although her face was concealed with a hood. She came at Yarick and kicked him hard in the face as her flying weapon returned to her awaiting grasp. It looked like a curved kuri-blade, the sort Nyriddians preferred. Nyriddians being a warrior race from the northlands.

She says in a firm but feminine voice: 'you both might as well surrender, the only reason I'm not bathing in your blood is the coin my employer has paid for your retrieval, alive." she removed a chain-whip that ended with a mace-head, 'you can either run, or face me in combat. Either choice leads to the same conclusion!'

[Ooc: is this the one I saw outside of the tavern so long ago? I feel like a lot of jumping around is going on again...]
Re: ** Part I: Fire and Ash **
Nope, Idrys has never seen this woman before now.TristenC wrote:[Ooc: is this the one I saw outside of the tavern so long ago? I feel like a lot of jumping around is going on again...]

{OOC1: Has Karlane? Or a description of her or her abilities or uniform or style?}
{OOC2: TBH I'm a bit nonplussed by this. The guys that outclassed us by half a dozen level now being taken effortlessly apart by the woman, so presumably F12 grand-master. Don't have to comment, just letting you know how it feels.}

OOC1: nope, you haven't either
.
OOC2: noted
Just an fyi, this can go very good for both of your characters if you roleplay it out for a bit. Keep in mind that she just stated she wasn't paid to kill either of you. And yeah, a 3rd level barbarian can be pretty crazy tough
A voice whispers in Karlene's mind: you could convince this one to kill her employer.

"Depends on who the employer is?" asks Karlane, genuinely needing to know and coincidentally gaining a few seconds to move her fingers concealed by her cloak and then under cover of a misdirecting glance at her brother she tries Stealth Casting (18) a Charm Person spell on the saddled woman.
If the spell is successful. Karlane she will caution Idrys to not attack the seemingly formidable woman with whom she genuinely does wish to be friendly.

Re: ** Part I: Fire and Ash **
The mounted warrioress dismounted and sauntered over toward Karlene, fully under the effects of the deceptively cast charm person spell. She quickly sheathed her kuri-sword, clasped Karlene in a warm embrace laughing 'well hells bells it's been a long time!' she grinned and said 'well? Since I'm here with you I might as well tag along, wherever you see fit to go. Surprised I'd even gotten to you before my competitors. Hey whose the old man?"
The old man looked at her in disdain, 'Woman, I am no ordinary old man. Have some respect in your manner of addressing me. I am a master artiste amongst other things!' he said angrily.

Re: ** Part I: Fire and Ash **
Do you know anything about that group of bandits camped out about a mile and a half northeast of here? Idrys asks their new best friend.
Re: ** Part I: Fire and Ash **
The woman nodded, "aye, I hired those bunch to keep watch and set upon you in case you actually managed somehow to give me the slip. I was going to dispose of them after their usefulness to me had ended. Those are the shadow wolves gang, they're good I begrudgingly admit. Expert at ambush and traps, covering their tracks, and each a expert rider. They do not fight worth a damn though, not in honorable combat at least'

Re: ** Part I: Fire and Ash **
Looking to his sister, idrys offers Perhaps we should simply circumvent them and be on our way.

The woman said "where are we bound for? Northeast of here is the spider wood, if you deign to travel there. The Elves there "guard it fiercely but would permit us to journey within if they are in good spirits."TristenC wrote:Looking to his sister, idrys offers Perhaps we should simply circumvent them and be on our way.
Re: ** Part I: Fire and Ash **
"Well, we want this fellow to do some work for us," answers Karlene.
"Where would you need to go to do that?" she asks the forger.
"And then there's a dwarf we need to talk to," she adds to Idrys and the woman. Turning to the remaining Black Guard, " Where did you say he was?"
"And then there's you and your lot," Karlane focuses on the woman. "I presume you know my name; the whole country seems to, despite the fact that I'm supposed to be some find of secret. Bu't can you remind me of your name, please? And where you came from? And who your boss is? And where he's based?"
"Then we come back to the point of whether we should destroy shadow wolves gang. Is that a lower risk that that of finding the Spiderwood elves in bad spirits?""

Re: ** Part I: Fire and Ash **
The elder bearded man said "a place with a flat surface, some decent parchment, squid ink and griffons feather quill and two hours of peace and quiet"
The woman said 'I am Azonia, and thine own sister granted me pardon and freedom from her horrific dungeon in exchange for your capture, knowing my fame as a skilled bounty-huntress. Still, I am selective in my prey, and you both did not fit the mold. Still, I was curious why a female paladin would desire to capture her own siblings. I deduced as much easily enough, the scandal she would instill at having two dhampir brother and sister competitors of her ancient family namesake. Second, and there is a second...will be revealed in due time. Perhaps somewhere more...secure"
The black guard laughed, 'might not be so bad to be terribly popular in these parts, girl. You crazy fools managed to thwart imperial forces, sabotage a siege weapon, dupe Karnak and kill a previous assassin sent by your own sister...I would say such acts would have gained the notice of the blind and deaf!' he said with a hearty chuckle.
Forger: "Dhampir? I was liberated from prison by not one, but two dhampirs, as if this day could not get any stranger!'
Azonia says 'Forget the wolves, they may be more useful alive than dead'

Re: ** Part I: Fire and Ash **
Karlane smiles with genuine warmth at Azonia, offering cryptically, "Thank you. In time to come I trust you will recall that all was done out friendship. For so I count you."
Ignoring the black guard, she focused on the bearded forger, "Well this is what I have. Is this adequate?" as she rummages for her 'Paper x10, Quill x2,Steel Flask Oil x4, Steel Inkpot'.
