Ruehar doesn't find anything significant looking from the edge of the town.
Cheff suggests that you search in arcs outwards from your current position. Having nothing better to do, you cast around for maybe 3/4 of an hour before picking up a faint trail heading into the hills.

Ruehar notifies Cheff of the trail. Do you have any skill at tracking? Otherwise I'll lead on quietly as possible and if you could follow and keep ready that would be great.

"Why don't you lead on then?" says Cheff who then holds back to let his elven companion get 100 yards ahead before following.
Ruehar follows the faint path which skirts the hills in a counter-clockwise direction. After perhaps a mile, rounding a small him and up a ridge, a small tent comes into sight. Watching from the cover of the ridge for a couple of minutes shows no sign of life or movement other than a sporadic flapping from the tent in response to the wind. Cheff catches up and says, "Ok, northwest from town then skirt the hills to their northern tip. That it?" He indicates the tent. "So what do you want to do?"

What indeed?

OOC: How do I get hex mapping going on here?

[Ooc: there is a free version of a program called Hexographer (http://www.hexographer.com/) you can try out. I sometimes use it. You can make maps there and take a screenshot or save as an image. It works on pc, mac, or anything that can run java that has enough ram to run it (about 1 gb necessary)]

Ruehar tries to conceal himself as he approaches quietly. He makes sure there is nobody around or in the tent before waving cheff up to investigate.

Cheff lets Ruehar get ahead again before following.
The elf sees that the tent is actually made from blankets and various pieces of cord. There is a fire pit about 20' in front of the tent. Behind the tent is a small rocky ledge jutting up from the sand in which a small cave entrance can be seen.
Believing his approach to have been silent, Ruehar opens the tent ready for a confrontation. It is empty apart from a dirty bedroom and some mismatched eating and cooking utensils.
Cheff catches up.

Ruehar searches the area around the tent and the cave entrance, asking Cheff to do the same. He is looking specifically for signs of a struggle or dragging that might indicate an unconscious person being hauled off.

There are no overt signs of a struggle (that can be detected without other skills such as Tracking.)
However, Ruehar doe see that just inside the cave entrance is a wooden gate.
Cheff is within 15' of Ruehar.

How will you proceed?

[Ooc: does the gate fully seal off rhe entrance, and is it locked/barred?]

Ruehar searches the tent more thoroughly for any kind of hiding place (such as a stash with loot or a key if there is a lock on the gate)

Ruehar finds little else in the tent apart from some kindling.

The gate was roughly made and covered pretty much all of the cave opening. It had a crude latch that could be operated from either side (but not by a goat).

Ruehar carefully approaches the gate, motioning for Cheff to wait until he can at least peer inside. He attempts to approach silently and unsee , peeking through the gate to see what he can see.

Should I not be rolling MS or HS for secrecy (I.e. DM knowledge only like in 2e?)

Cheff holds back 20'.
Ruehar peers through the gate and sees some goats and, possibly the back end of a camel.

======
If you RP it well then I've no probs with it.
But I wouldn't ask you to make a roll if you hadn't thought of it. I would do it for you (opposed or not, and not tell you) so as to not alert you.

The Elf slips over the wall without using the gate and moves towards the back, quietly staying in the shadows and searching to see if there are any hidden areas or passages.

Ruehar slips through the gate soundlessly, in his own mind at least, and waits for his eyes to adjust.
It's dark enough to hinder normal vision but bright enough to preclude infravision.

The inside of the cave opens up, mostly dropping gradually away from the entrance, not enough to hinder progress in any way, but sufficient to make the cave larger thean it appeared from the outside.
The walls are fairly irregular and could easily hide numerous side passages or hidey holes.

A goat comes up sniffing and then nuzzling the elf's hand, possibly looking for food. Two more follow, not wanting to be left out. All 3 are quite thin.
There appears to be grass or hay strewn around carelessly about 30' into the cave, currently being trampled by two camels that appear to be tethered to something or other. One of them Ruehar evilly.

There is a gentle, deep, periodic whistling noise coming from further into the cave, seemingly beyond where it curves out of sight round to the right (about 30-40' from the gate.)

[ "One of them Ruehar evilly."
Does that mean one of the camels is eyeing me?]

Ruehar ignores the goats as best he can and keeps an eye on the camels, not letting them get too close. He creeps quietly towards the whistling sound, readying an arrow...

Ruehar pulls out and strings his bow, then tries to creep forwards.
The whistling is starting to sound unnervingly like a someone sleeping. Just deeper than one would expect.. and from somewhere beyond the camels.
