Meagan answered "I do not believe you to be in any real danger, for this was an isolated incident and you got caught in the midst of it. They were drunken sods, and the Blood Raven commander Barg Wilts might even seek you out in order to recruit you for it. I saw how you handle yourself, and few in Harby brandish an invisible sword. Tell you what, go buy force captain Galdan Greyblade a flagoon or three and he will hear your story and if told rightly, will side on your behalf. Also if you are looking for work the Ravens always hire, especially those of the adventuring profession."

She examined some of the things on the table and remarks "that is quite a bit of a haul you have here. Argan in Dagger alley will give you good coin for the black cloak gear"

After cleaning his eyes Idryss sees even better than a few minutes ago, and the itching ebbs. He can sense the itching is from wound repair, and now he sees clearer.

Yes, and the excruciating pain is no longer.

While Karlene examines the papers and journals the following document falls out of a journal, wrote on it is some fanciful script penned in a delicate and sophisticated manner:

The Book of Unknown

Herein lies the sacred text from the codex of secrecy, bible of Lor.

Book XI, verse 25 - “In the seventh age, a vast power shalt emerge unchecked to dominate the inner kingdoms. It can be identified by its black heart, black soul, and a master who would throne himself as Lord of all Life.

And then Lor , assisted by his brother Wrath will annoint seven mortals with the predestined powers required to obliterate the evil ones designs, which is the nullification of all magic, purge of all worshippers of the true powers, and a dark age of immense suffering.

Then Lor set into play his pieces – the protector, the warrior, the mage, the thief, the assassin, and the paladin to ensure the survival of the seven. For if any of the seven were to be captured at the hands of the evil one, corrupted or slain a terrible time shall befall the realms of men and elves.
Indeed, the seven bore the vital attributes to nullify the evil one, for the seven were once one long ago, shattered into seven parts by the evil ones own great ancestor aeons ago during the Dren dynasty. Cast adrift in the sleepless eternal of Limbo as dead Gods Wrath and Lor ressurected them on Scarlor in secret, placing them as mortal children. For they needed to be as such to reawaken their dormant latent power, rememberance, and to become fully whole. In truth, a mortal life with all its hardship was the best medicine for establishing a deities long forgotten talents. Yet there were those who would thwart and blaspheme the God of Secrets and the God of Swords designs.

Karlene translates for Idrys, if possible in a language just the two of them present will understand.

Meagan says 'Mmm, I shall go and fetch us some viddles, all of this work seems awfully exhaustive. Some camomille tea and biscuits ought to do the trick' she leaves the room.

Karlene translates all the text into thieves cant, the type only employed throughout Nyr and Lor.

Describe what you both do for next few hours...

The lair of the Brokem Ones seems a little out of our depth for now, especially if they slaughtered hundreds without much progress... Id like to make finding father's swords a priority, but realistically we need to uncover whether our sister actually was behind the assassination attempts or not. Additionally, tonight we need to decide if we are meeting our friend "Spider"... As for the gear; I'm satisfied with my armor and gauntlets. The elven dagger with the garrotte might be useful, and perhaps the Elven boots... [ooc: can't remember if they were something we'd gotten together or yours exclusively] I think we should hang onto the black uniforms while in town to avoid conflict.

Karlene muses, "Unless I read it wrongly, there were upposed to be 7 pieces, but only 6 were named: the protector, the warrior, the mage, the thief, the assassin and the paladin. Any thoughts on that?"
She adds, "hmmm same number, 7, as the number of orphans for whom Lord Scaldar decreed 'a sizable bounty'."

"Ok, Idrys, I think we should start to simplify this stuff down. Without fretting about it too much, you've garnered magnetic gloves, some superb armour and an invisible sword. That means the other gloves and elven chainmail are of no use to you. I can probably use the gloves but probably not the chain {OOC: @Spike - the elven chain would hamper thief skills? And prevent arcane casting? Or..?} So for now, at least, I'd like the gloves, cloak & boots. I think the glassteel ring needs to be Identified before we decide what to do with it. I'll identify stuff over time, but until my mastery of the art increases, I can only do that once a day, and that's starting tomorrow.I can use the elven dagger, but if you want it then fine.
That suggests we can sell or barter the Elven glassteel katana and maybe the chainmail, but not until I've checked them for magic and unless Ash has a desire for them. Talking of which, how well do you know him? And how much do you trust him?"

After listening to her brother's reply, she continues inventorying, "Valuables, 16GP, 25SP, pimp's black scorpion signet ring and 3 gold teeth. Convert all this to cash? Do you recall what the vials of thyriz do? Also, I'm tempted to keep the black guard uniforms, but if someone uses 'Locate Object' it could lead them to us. I'm inclined to sell all the guard's stuff: dirk, 2 longswords, mace, dagger, boot dagger, 2 cloaks, 2 black chainmails. But what's your view?

Karlene spends a few minutes examining the black scorpion signet ring, in case it has any hidden secrets, and then examines the other stuff from the Broken Ones area: pouches, shoes, rope, armor, sword and shield.

Then she takes out some writing stuff and makes a list, summarising the documents she read earlier:
  • Do we know who Lord Scaldar is? And where? (runs Drow & trolls) Is Scaldar = Dezloz? And what do we know about Dezloz?
Scaldar has a base (farm) in the suburbs of Lor. And a secret base in the dark elf lands
Do we know anything else about Lomag? (shadow master, runs the broken ones, does slavery and sacrifice)
East and west tunnels are still infested (broken ones?)
    Watchers oppose Lomag.
Do we know anything about House Succcundus? (oppose Lord Scaldar)
Black Company were seeking: 'mask of change' & 'Cats-Eye ring'.
Blind mage ("Hedge") in Desley swamp (to north), farseer.
Do we know anything about Basiliv ?

Karlene reads this out to Idrys and asks for his comments and anything he can add to each topic.

======
{OOC1: Spike, did the post where Karlene was translating/reading documents cover all of: Pimp's tiny ledger book (list of names and unpaid debts), Docs from Karnac for Dezloz (stolen from Lor priests ), Black officer's map & documents, blacck guard's tiny black leather bound journal, & Broken Ones' journal?},
{OOC2: How many vials of vials of thyriz do we have?}
{OOC3: When was the Watcher agent waiting for us? And downstairs? Or..?}
{OOC4: What else do we know about anything in the list above (that this player has forgotten but a female half-vampire with a Photographic Memory might not)?}
{OOC5: When we've digested this lot, I'll look at the "Things to do list" and figure out what to do in the next couple of game hours. But its getting late here, so that's a job for tomorrow. But as I said, this campaign which contained an awesome amount of information none of which will I want to relinquish.}

#1: Pimps ledger has 25 names, mixed bag of women and men each owes max 100 gp in debt, shows how much they each paid and interest rate of 5%. A note scrawled reads 'If any of these deadbeats try to skip town, end them, or sell them as bed slaves.

#2: 12 vials

#3: Hes in the commonroom having a drink

#4: you heard much about Dezloz during your growing up in court, and that he was a usurper and a power mad tyrant in the black kingdoms to the south. Not much is known about him.

#5 noted

b]correction:[/b] the ones outlined (e.g. assassin, paladin, mage, etc) are not one and the same as the orphaned children, but rather are cryptic references to beings prophesized to protect the children.

Letters

#1

To all units in vicinity of Lor,

Due to the traitorous breach of our forces strategies and methods from the renegade Ash, we will implement entirely new ones commencing now. This will present a lull in current operations, but in the grand scheme of all well worth it to ensure our secrecy and protections.

By the emperors will,

-Lord Scaldar

#2:

Karnak,

Lomag requests half of your Hobgoblin shock troops, you will provide them to him without further challenge. Know your place, mage. Further insubordinatiion will be dealt with more severely I fear. You have been instrumental, it would be a pity if you became dispensable so early in our campaign.

To restablish my good favor, be on the lookout for any suspicious travelers coming and going from Harby. There are reports of a minor insect named Spider who has been a great nuissance to our elite special forces in the area. He seems to specialize in ambush and sabotage, having glued our mens swords in their scabbards and similar treatment to their crossbows. This agent commands a healthy respect from the Elves and a cadre of them are at his command, so do not take him lightly.

-Scaldar

#3:

Commander,

Problem noted, your surplus of future slaves is a trivial matter beneath our notice, deal with it as you would. I am certain Lomag will be more than pleased to take them off your hands.

I need you to provide security at the meeting in the valley of the arch-mage, nestled betwixt mount Keldon and Spear at the end of the week. Several leaders in attendance whose forces we require. Namely the Orc King Grizzlag and the Kobold king Knik Knik, the others I care not for. We believe the Watchers will dispatch a team of skilled assassins to infiltrate this very crucial summit. We require your special eye and organizational genius to ensure no flies end up in the proverbial ointment.

I look fowarrd to your future reports.

For the glory of the imperium!

#4

Lord Scaldar,

I am not at the behest of that fat, bloated dungheap Lomag and his cult of fanatics, nor am I prepared to provide him half of my personal guard.

I am a Suel mage of arcane lineage, one whom the empire desperately requires not the reverse. It is no secret that every mage the empire has groomed and reared now lies in an unmarked grave. Henceforth, the pittance of a salary you provide should be doubled in sum and I require two of your elites to supplement my own guard retinue. The twin brothers Lorig and Hanzar I hear are deadly killers, I will deprive you of them.

No more interuptions, I continue my good works undisturbed by petty going ons within your organisation.

Karlane adds a few lines to her notes after reading the additional documents:
  • Do we know who Lord Scaldar (works for an emperor. runs Drow & trolls) is? And where? Is Scaldar = Dezloz? And what do we know about Dezloz (usurper & tyrant in the black kingdoms to the south)?
Ash used to work for Scaldar.
    Karnac nominallyworks for Scaldar.
Karnak (Suel mage) wants twin brothers Lorig and Hanzar (assassins) & hates Lomag.
Scaldor hunts Spider (who commands some elves.)
Meeting in the valley of the arch-mage, between mount Keldon and Spear at the end of the week (Orc King Grizzlag, the Kobold king Knik Knik). Watchers will try to infiltrate.
Do we know anything about House Succcundus? (opposes Lord Scaldar)
Black Company were seeking: 'mask of change' & 'Cats-Eye ring'.
Blind mage ("Hedge") in Desley swamp (to north), farseer.
Do we know anything about Basiliv ?
We have 12 vials of ‘thyriz’ and a Pimp ledger.
She reads it out to Idrys, then asking if he has anything to add on any of the line items.
After noting any reply, Karlane says, "Tell me if you think otherwise, but seems to me we've headed north for a variety of reasons and potentially into this 'Valley of the Archmage'. But before that, we should seethe person downstairs {OOC: Name of?} and visit Argan in Dagger to unload some stuff. Got the silks and cheeses too. What else do you think we need to do in the next couple of hours?"

After this, Karlane writes out the promised letter of recommendation for Meagan to the Temple.

[Ooc: Karnak is the mage in charge of the town we're in, I'm sure he's still here. He thinks we work for Dezloz because the black-clad people we stopped at the ferry did. Spider, the halfling "Watcher" (i think like the Harpers from Faerun) that we freed is waiting for us downstairs (or in the 5th chamber of some name we can look up in a minute if we decide to go). Lomag sacrificing orphans to Demogorgon (super-bad mojo from that guy. Seriously.) ]

I suppose we should meet spider and present him with this new information. Let spider know Scaldar has warned Karnak (the mage in charge of town) about the Watcher's plot to assassinate the leaders at the summit. If you want to join the watchers that's your business, the resources could be a strong boon in our current 'intensely hunted' position. I'll follow your lead on that, I could take it or leave it so long as I'm able to stick by you and eventually resolve this thing with our... 'sister'... he adds the last word skeptically. Unloading the black-cloak gear might net us a little coin, but we'll be out a useful disguise, and of Karmak has any agents in the black market it might tip him off that we're imposters... especially risky since he knows where we're staying... It seems this Scaldar and Karnak are vying for advantage in their dealings. It might be worth it to drive a further wedge between them and have the fox and snake strike at each other while we slip quietly away... I don't suppose you know a good forger?

Karlene smile at Idrys, "Thank you. You're the best. Wish we'd always been together."
She mulled over her brother's wisdom, twiddling with her quill at the same time, then continues, "You're right, we hold on to the black guard stuff for a while at least. So go see Spider. I don't know of a forger around here, but I'd be surprised if he doesn't know one. If he does, we go for that and stick with them while it suits us and them at least. Then I want to check out this Argan in Dagger alley, but have another word with Meagan first. Anyway, I really like your idea on driving a wedge and think I can see where you're going with that. But do tell what you have in mind!"

Idrys shrugs, It just seems like a power struggle to me, like two dogs fighting to be alpha. If we make it look like one is blatantly planning a move against the other it might be enough to cause a 'strike first' reaction... they're practically at it now after Karnak's last letter. He was positively preening, that piece of shit... not to mention he blatantly tried to hire me to turn you over to him as a... diversion... seriously, doesn't that bother you? I spent my whole life thinking I'm some abberant freak alone, and come to find out that not only are there more like me but family... and all I hear lately is how everyone just wants to murder us after wrapping you around their waist first.

The muscles on Idrys right arm stand out like corded steel as he grips the hilt of the invisible longsword with white knuckles... the sword he had taken from the would-be assassin... the first one who wanted to use his sister for... for... A deep growl welled in his throat and a film of red began to descend over his eyes, but he pushed it back. The filthy thing was dead. He had been so enraged he'd nearly cut the assassin in half with his first blow... luck. he reminded himself. blind luck... it won't save you forever... and it won't save her after you get your fool self killed because you can't keep your blood down... it took a concerted effort, but he forced his hand to relax and release the hilt. If we can drive them to strike at each other with some direct challenge they'll do the work for us and we can get clear. he finished, cold as an ice-capped mountain.

Karlene hears his growl and sees Idrys's tension. She moves up behind him, making sufficient noise to insure he hears, and puts her arms around his chest.
"Thank you, my big, strong brother. You make me feel safe." She smile to herself before adding, "And if anyone hurts you, I'll tear them in half."
She gives him a squeeze and lets go. "Right, unless there's more, we wait for Meagan, have a word with her. Then go see Spider, after whom, Argan."

{OOC1: Have we now read everything from Docs from Karnac for Dezloz (stolen from Lor priests ), Black officer's map & documents, black guard's tiny black leather bound journal, & Broken Ones' journal? Is a copy of the map available, please?} Maps coming, once I get my new scanner.

{OOC2: Does Karlane know the whereabouts of Scaldar? And whether or not Scaldar is Dezloz?} Nope.
{OOC3: Does Karlane know the whereabouts of Karnak? And anything about Lorig and Hanzar?} in town per Idrys response.
{OOC4: Does Karlane know the whereabouts of Lomag? And who, if anyone, he works for?} nope, hes a cleric of Demogorgon one of the infernal powerrs
{OOC5: I think we’ve met someone called Spider. Is he the person waiting for us, having a drink? Or..?} in the commonroom
{OOC6: Has Karlane heard of the ‘Valley of the Archmage’? If so, what does she know about it? And which direct are mount Keldon and Spear ?} (obscure knowledge) succeeded: it lies nestled at the base of the stairs to heaven, seven mountains in the heart of the Gate Mountains. You heard that there are many pheonixes that prey on wyverrns in the region and that there is a arch mage who actually dwells there and is incredibly learned, ancient and wise. Many a king or queen consults with him.
{OOC7: Were the 2 officers & guards that we ran into before (all in black) likely to have been members of the ‘Black Company’? Or is that known by us to be something completely different?} No, Black Company are a small band of professional mercenary adventurers not the same as the black cloak imperials.
{OOC8: Has Karlane heard of the ‘House Succcundus’? If so, what does she know about it?}

House Succundus is the noble house of the Lord Duke Commander Daynar Succundus, overlord of Lor. The most prestigious and powerful of houses, the dukes friends and family manage his household. He routinely enlists adventurers as hirelings in lieu of mercs. Daynar somehow systematically wiped out all rival houses to his own long ago, thought to be assisted by Elven affluence and with the aid of the Lor priesthood. He is a fighter-lord but also a diplomat and something of a spy. He has a brother named Mortiasgus, Belzzor, Garosh and a half sister named Sable Solatra his weapon master and bodyguard. Mortiasgus is his house assassin and spy, and Garosh force captain of Succundus house troops..He is currently being courted by the Nyrian queen AND the Elven Empress.

{OOC9: Has Karlane heard of either the Blind mage ("Hedge") or the Desley swamp? If so, what does she know about any of them? What does she know about ‘Farseeing’?} No. But a farseer is one gifted with the ability to divine possible future events and outcomes based on actions and movements of the present.
{OOC10: Has Karlane heard of Basiliv? If so, what does she know about any of it?} Basiliv is a mage, also a poet and a thief prior to his current role as a wizard.
{OOC11: Has Karlane heard of Blood Raven commander Barg Wilts? Who exactly were the Blood Ravens? What does she know about them? Mercenaries? Or..?} Nothing outside of what Meagan informed you. The Blood Ravens are mercenaries who have a high code of honor.
{OOC12: Has Karlane heard of force captain Galdan Greyblad? Which organisation is he which and where does he fit into all of this?} Nope, never.
{OOC13: What does ‘thyriz’ do?} You have no clue.
{OOC14: Has Karlane heard of 'mask of change' &/or 'Cats-Eye ring'? If so, what does she know about them?} Mask of Change allows wearer to change self once worn. Usually owned and used by holy assassins of Lor. Though Lorians gift them to their thief servitors who serve them well.
{OOC15: Did Karlene find any new, any hidden secrets, in the black scorpion signet ring?} It has a hidden spike!
{OOC16: Did Karlene find anything, or know anything, about the stuff from the Broken Ones area: pouches, shoes, rope, armor, sword and shield? Or are these merely ordinary items? What is in the pouches?}[/i][/quote] all the items are mundane, in the pouches:

an adamantium ignot
a folded, collapsable glaive (a blade edged boomerang)
a tiny but well drawn map, on the back are notes. It appears to point to an underground dungeon that is titled DWEMER CITY. Theres a little blurb on the back that reads 'Scroll of mapping, fragments are hidden in the city in five locations. One is in a hallow shaft of a halberd, and another in an automaton. Drow thief stole #4, and #5 is in the royal museum of Corealus, capitol of Nyr.

In the commonroom below, you bypass several tables occupied by townfolk farmers, merchants, and down on their luck mercenaries.

Circumventing the crowd to reach Spider who is seated near the roaring hearth, he greets you with a warm genuine smile. A handsome regal looking halfling clad as a lordly figure, exuding a quiet calm about him and an easy affable air. He is accompanied by two he introduces as Bane and Sybil, one a ranger and the other: a blind witch.

The barmaid brought two mugs of mulled wine, and a platter of assorted cheese, bread, and dates. Spider half sneered at her, “bacon and other sweat meats” he said calmly.

Turning to you both, he turned serious and says “Ive heard a good deal about you two, heard about your activities in the bogs, your confrontation with black cloaks, and your penchant for drawing far too much attention to yourselves. Gaining the ire and notice of Lomag by depriving his servants of a very important sacrifice for one. I figured if you were insistent on crashing through life causing all sorts of chaos and mayhem, might as well do it professionally. You can join our prestigious ranks, yet you need to pass an audtion first.

First things first, Idrys I know you have designs to go explore Draxcon, I must delay your plan to do this. Why? There is a army of black orcs that rule the snake river from here to there, and they would decimate you easily. Nevermind the fact once you are actually there, in Draxcon a number of perils await you. Kobolds, two entire tribes and a level of Dwarven engineered death traps. I mean no disrespect when I say you simply are ill prepared for such an undertaking.

Sybil here counsels me to send you both to meet Hedge, who is her former tutor. He, in turn will unlock some of your potential. That is to say, he will increase your power and knowledge considerably.

After you have met and trained with Hedge, you will be far more prepared to undertake Draxcon.

As an incentive, the Watchers offer you this as a sort of reward if you will.

If you drink the blood of an Elven child on the eve of a sanquine mood, or blood moon, you will arouse the dormant power of regeneration that sleeps inside of you. This was actually a gift from your dear friend Nyra who strongly persuaded me to extend myself. Mind you the child must also be of royal lineage. Oh looky I just happen to have two vials here in my purse...” he tosses both with one hand, but you note that both vials split apart to land in either of your hands. Then he spoke again “After you meet with Hedge, I do have positions open for you to fill. However, you will need to further delay your Draxcon mission to undertake more crucial work, the work your own queen would be strongly in favor of, Karlene. Something to mull over, whichever course you decide is yours to make. Whatever happens, happens”
