CH. 12: Testing Grounds

This 2E Dragonlance game is set in the city of Haven, during the War of the Lance. Haven is a city undergoing great upheaval. First massive numbers of refugees pour in, then the city is conquered by a draconic army. Can our heroes survive under this dark occupation?

"Not sure about bringing peace to the world, as you said, it seems to be a very good world. But I do think I'll try to make some change starting with the near environment. My father was able to find positive in every person or situation. Raetmal also taught me to look carefully at everything I know from all directions, find the good and bad, learn all possible information and then consider how to proceed weighting all courses of action. I plan to give it a try." Tulbas answers trying to convince himself together with the others. He knew first handed the world is corrupted. Indeed it seems the wizards who stays in the Tower are immune to all that crap. Just working on developing the Art. Pure knowledge. It could be great place for him... On the other hand, he was also curious about the world. He already had few adventures. When he saved Daxia, it was very satisfying, almost like learning new spell. And there was his plan to revenge his family murder, including his uncle, and find his sister. Maybe after that and after some more adventures he will consider this option again. And besides, he wasn't sure he will live to see the next day sunrise.

"You're welcome," Kendra says with a light smile.

She watches Arulia go, and sighs softly. She wishes she could do more for her and her family, but she has her own family to worry about along with herself. She finishes her walk to work to see what that has in store for her.

{OOC: Jaded, I'm assuming Felran is here, albeit NPCed by you, but please confirm. (I think that ages ago the player said it was fine to be NPCed.) Also Ne-Chanz has said he'll kill the Gullies. Shima is just waiting for him to kick it off and then he'll try for a backstab on a Gully.}

Shima nods, and gestures for Ne-Chanz & Felran to move further into the room and go ahead. He then pulls back into the darkness of the corridor (to try and move silently and hide in the shadows.)
As soon as there is the sound of someone being thumped (melee), the dwarf will creep forward (MS) and try to backstab the nearest suitably positioned Gully.

Damn, this item retrieval stuff is harder then it looks! Well as he was trying he also was thinking up new plans, and when you put a brilliant mind like his up to coming up with new plans, he has no difficulty coming up with a few brilliant ones. Two that he came up with this time are worth trying. One involves this being an old keep that the baaz probably don't know all that much about. Perhaps there are a few stories surrounding the building that they might be uncomfortable with...

The other one involves trying to give them a violent distraction so that he can get his knife back, and maybe get the gate open. Leaning in between the Baaz, haahqae puts on his best baaz voice and quietly whispers the word "coward" as close to between their ears as he can get. As soon as the word leaves his lips, he backs off, so as to not get hit by any quick reactions from either of them.

Ne-Chanz simply wades in with a lit torch and a longsword, and swings at whatever he can reach.

Haahqae (Old Keep, Courtyard)
"Who are you calling a coward?" demands the first one, shoving the second one.

"I didn't say nothin'!" says the second one.

"I killed more elves than you on the battlefield!"

"So what? Elves are pansies, they fall over dead with a breeze."

The two start to scuffle a bit, shoving each other around.

Kendra Greylock (Prefect's Mansion)
Kendra finishes walking to the noble district and arrives at the prefect's mansion. She is shown in and escorted to Tethys by his elderly butler. Tethys is at his desk, as usual, filling out paperwork. "Ah, Kendra. You are late. It's already Fifth Watch," he notes. "I hope you didn't run into trouble on the way here."

Tulbas Erogund (Tower of Wayreth, Lounge)
The students ponder on his words when the door opens and Daxia steps in, followed by three other wizards. The four mentors, including Magnus, all stand in respect at the sight of the newcomers. "May I present the Heads of the Orders, Master Par-Salian, Mistress Ladonna and Master Justarius."

Par-Salian is a frail and elderly man in his seventies, with long wispy white hair, a long white beard and bright blue eyes. He wears immaculate white robes. He is not just the Head of the Order of Solinari, but the Master of Wayreth Tower itself. He leans heavily on his staff, using it more as a walking stick than a magical weapon.

Ladonna is a striking woman with iron-gray hair tied in intricate braids. Tulbas would guess she is in her mid-fifties, but she is still quite good-looking for her age. She is garbed in lustrous black robes that are inlaid with silver runes of protection, and bears many fine jewels on her person.

Justarius is a well-built and athletic looking man in his mid-40s, who has brown hair, dark eyes and bears a left crippled leg. Despite being half his age, he also leans on his staff like a walking stick like Par-Salian does.

"Welcome students, to the Tower of Wayreth," Par-Salian says, smiling warmly. "How many do we have this year? Four? Hmm, quite a turn out. Our best in recent memory. May the three moons favor you tonight as you join our ranks."

Arulia Seroth (Outside the Brothel)
Parting ways with Kendra, Arulia makes her way to the brothel--or rather, the building that will become the brothel, once it's open. It's still closed as renovations and repairs are being made inside. A sign on the outside advertises the place, suggesting it will open next month or so.

The building that was burned down recently is nearby, as well. It's roped off with signs warning of the place being dangerous. It's quite the eyesore, especially next to the brothel which is being made up nicer than any other building in this part of town.

Grubnick (Burned Building, Basement)
Grubnick inches a bit closer and listens in. He realizes they are not speaking Common...rather they are speaking the Goblin tongue.

"Pass another ale!" says one, laughing.

"Whoa there, Klub, easy there. Ain'tcha supposed to be on duty?"

"As far as the commander knows, I am!"

There's a chorus of laughter. "This place is great. Nobody knows about it and nobody will come snooping around with it roped off. The perfect place to unwind without dealing with the dracs or humans!" one exclaims.

Felran (?), Ne-Chanz, and Shima (North Haven Sewers)
While Shima waits in the corridor, Ne-Chanz readies his sword and prepares to move forward with the slaughter.

(OOC: I guess? Ne-Chanz said Felran was with them, but chese himself hasn't posted in this game since June, over three months ago which is long enough to stop being considered a 'temporary NPC.' Not really sure what his status is now.

Anyway, here's the map. Numbers 10, 11 and 12 are children. Number 1 is their leader, wearing the crown. He's in studded leather armor and is carrying a hand axe. Numbers 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 and are wearing padded armor with an assortment of cooking implements added, like pots for helms, pans tied to their chests, that sort of thing. Number 4 has a sling, while Number 2 has a club and Numbers 3 and 5 have daggers. The rest are unarmed and unarmored.

State actions for Round 1. Make sure to name your targets.)

Intriguing as this discovery is, Grubnick suspects that his presence would not be appreciated by the soldiers; goblin or no. Perhaps there was some way to use this to ignite the fire between goblins and baaz later, but avoiding discovery was paramount for now. Taking just as much care as before, Grubnick heads back to the surface. He checks the above-ground surroundings as well as he can from the entrance before fully emerging. It wouldn't so to be discovered leaving a place off-limits to civilians...

Aha! Brilliant plan A (or was this C?) was going off without a hitch. Now that they’re distracted Haahqae starts with one more attempt to retrieve the dagger. (Probably hard with them moving around, but it’s pretty unlikely that he’d notice in his current state). Then he quietly makes his way over to the lever and waits for an opportune moment to slowly pull it.

If the fight between the baaz escalates, then they might not notice the gate opening. (so he'll open the gate)
If they should break it up and calm down, then he’ll have to resort to plan spooky fort to get the gate open. (so he won't open the gate, yet)

Kendra winces a little bit at being told she is late. "I apologize," she says. "I ran into an old friend on my way here, and I lost track of the time as we caught up a little bit. I can stay later to make up the time," she offers.

(OOC: I'm still trying to catch up on everything that I missed. It's kind of hard to post if you keep getting poked with "We're killing Gully dwarves, RESPOND!"

Seriously, I'm reading through three months of backlog.)

Felran moves to block Ne-Chanz from reaching the dwarves.

"Not happening, so deal with it. You may just be fine with killing everything, but some of us aren't. How about we think of something creative, other than just killing everything in front of us."

"Well, do we know just how far this sewer goes? Maybe, if there is a way out of the city in general, that would be good for us and them."

Felran looks around, looking for more corridors or paths away from this area.

"We could... make a raft or something. Sewers have to lead somewhere."
