No, I don't use the Priest's Compendium at all in my games.

The only spells you have access to are the ones in your spell list on your character block. You can research spells from other sources, but do not have access to them until then.

Today is June 15th, which means that it is the 4th anniversary of this game. It comes at an opportune time, too. The second arc is almost over, after having spent 3 years on it.

I had hoped to have my new game ready to go today (that way, I wouldn't have to remember two anniversary dates! ), but it'll still be awhile longer before 'Lost Souls: Gontoria' is up and running.

Anyway, I award all players 4,000 XP in honor of today. This brings us very close to reaching the 40,000 XP needed to end the second arc. With any luck, Chapter 17 will be the finale.

{OOC: Wouldn't Naras have moved a bit closer than that? If I understand it correctly, PHB 120 (optional rule) gives a jog as Movement x2 yards =120 yards, run as x3 yards =180 yards (with Str check)....}

A charge allows you to move at 150% of your movement rate.

Jogging or running aren't really meant to be used in battle (except maybe to escape), because if you fail your checks, you have to stop and rest for each round spent jogging or running. You can do that, if you want to take that risk, though. But you didn't make that clear.

What wording should I use that's stronger than "...Naras runs full tilt towards the sentry,..." ?

Here's my take on it:
a) A charge was a combat action that could only be used if you were in charging distance of the foe.
b) Not being in melee (300' away from the nearest fighting) a jog or run could be done. p120 says any char can jog at 2x normal movement speed in yards (so 120 yard or 360') in a round and can hold that pace for CON rounds before having to make a Con check. I think the Endurance NWP doubles that to 2x Con rounds.

One possible way to handle it is to say the dwarf jogs closer and then slow down ready to close and the final few tens of feet into melee next round.

It always helps to provide clear communication, even if that means adding an OOC note at the end. Because, "I run toward the enemy" can mean you are charging, jogging, making a STR check to move at x3 (or more) speed, or just moving at normal speed but you feel 'run' sounds more dramatic than 'walk at a brisk pace.'

In other words, at the bottom of your post just write, "(OOC: By 'run' I mean...)"
Chris1234 wrote:a) A charge was a combat action that could only be used if you were in charging distance of the foe.
There's nothing I can find in the rule books that says this, although I can see how you might make that assumption.

According to the PHB, "In a combat round, a being can move up to 10 times its movement rating in feet." This is because "he is keeping his eyes open for trouble, avoiding surprise, watching his back, watching the backs of his partners, and looking for a good opening while simultaneously planning his next move..."

So...how about this? I'll allow Naras to move in yards during a fight, but she suffers a penalty to surprise. If anything should attack her from behind, if anything unexpected happens, she will be caught completely off guard because she is not paying attention to what's happening around her. This could mean a save or AC penalty, depending on the situation. Sound good?

Footnote - gotit, will do, ty.

I took Charge as a combat action as it's listed under the action called "Movement in Combat" (PHB p96 from memory)

That's the whole point - she was still several rounds away from combat if moving at 90' - so she wasn't in combat. I believe you told me (before) a combat round is the same number of seconds as a non-combat round, so the only difference is the amount of care you're taking. So the intent here was to close the remaining distance quickly, getting close enough to then move more carefully into combat. Perhaps the wording "move towards combat" versus "move into combat" would have been better. Would that have helped?

e.g. Rnd 1:Naras moves towards combat. ===> (So movement out of combat applies, PHB p119/120, 180' for Naras, normal chance of being surprised, or a jog at 360' and no Con check for less than Con rounds of jogging. It doesn't mention a penalty to surprise for jogging that I can see, but the +1/-1 cited for doubling dungeon movement rate seems appropriate.

Rnd 2: Naras closes to combat and tries to hit the foe. ===> (so dungeon movement rate applies, p96. OK the foe's dead now but that's beside the point..) If you deem it a higher surprise penalty then fine; that's a GM thing.

Okay, then just make sure to mention what speed you are moving in your next IC post then.

Thx.
I have it in my head as follows:
At careful combat speed (dungeon movement rates) Naras can move in 60' so that means she counts within combat range of a given foe when <60' from them..
Therefore she only gets the faster movement (essentially outdoors travel rates) up to a distance of 60' from a foe.

So R1 would be jog for 7 segments (60% of the round) at MVx2 in yards (0.6x60x2x3=216', so 84' away), then walk for 1 segment (10% of the round) at MV in yards (0.1*60*1*3-18', so 66' away), then dungeon movement rate kicks in at MV in feet for 2 segments (20% of the round), so (0.2x60x1x1=12' so 54'away.)

They tested the cannon on a deserted island and it turned out to be a weapon of mass destruction, nearly destroying an entire mountain with a massive fireball. There was a big debate on whether the Bullring sisters should keep the cannon or destroy it. Jocelyn, Ouragana and Gallath managed to convince Sierra it was too dangerous and so they dropped it into the sea. Baeros, however, wanted them to keep it.

Then we skipped ahead a few days, to the Bullring arriving at Draska Island, specifically the town of Enott. The whole party, plus Naishe, disembarked. Jocelyn drew a lot of stares, because Draskans primarily worship Renos instead of Octhanus. The whole town is basically a criminal haven. It's run by pirates, slavers, thieves and murderers. Everywhere the party looks, someone is getting stabbed or robbed and nobody seems to care; that's just normal life here. The strongest have power over the weak.

They went into a tavern and asked about the Poison Curse. Only when Jocelyn flashed some platinum did they get any answers. (But they drew a lot of attention, too; lots of people in the tavern took note of the coin.) They were told to look up a man called Raven who runs the local orphanage. Jocelyn seemed to know him.

So they went to the orphanage. A bunch of kids came out and surrounded Baeros and he tried to talk to them about rangering, hunting and such. Then they ran off and he realized they took his belt pouch. Going inside, they discovered that Raven trains all of his orphans and then sells them to whichever organization wants them, which include slavers, pirates, brothels, assassins' and thieves' guilds and so forth--basically, groups that would find it useful to recruit young people with no families.

That's about it. The party is currently trying to find out from Raven how to contact the Poison Curse.
