[Ooc: yeah... they're bolder than the average wolves too... and Elsa did mention getting attacked by wolves yesterday... those were normal-sized wolves though...]

Well... if you think that'll work... we've gotta try something... I'll lead the way, I might be able to advance easier than you with my shield... she says without much conviction. She begins to circle around him to the West, staying back-to back with him. The White wolf, clearly the cleverest of the three, takes a quick hop to block her, but not before she makes a little headway. The steel-shaded beast to the West snaps at her to drive her back, but she is ready for him and he catches nothing but air.

Pyros keeps himself close, but the black and white wolves blitz him at the same time. He dodges the smaller wolf easily, but is nearly caught by the leader as he evades the darker! Hot breath stinking of rotting meat assaults his nose, and he is nearly close enough to count the hairs on its hide! Reflexively he jabs at its side with the pointed end of his Hoopak, driving the tip hard into the white pelt. Though hardier than his fellows, the Alpha’s wounds are starting to add up and he begins to move with a bit more caution.

The grey wolf hops about, trying to strike at Elsa and she bides her time, waiting for the right moment. A slight hesitation and misjudged distance are all the opportunity she needs as she clubs it over the head with her mace. Shaking its furry face, the grey wolf (taking injury for the first time since the conflict began) growls viciously at her. I’m beginning to think we might actually live through this… maybe… the Halfling mutters, bolstered by their recent success however minor.

[OOC: I’m starting to think you should name him ‘Pyros the Untouchable’ If this continues you two could just walk to town if the wolves were only attacking the Kender and you guys would still be safe! :D ]

"Let's still get to the water just in-case."

Pyros will want to try and smack W1 again if the opportunity arises, or just hit any random wolf that is coming by if he has the opportunity.

Just because he feels like it, Pyros will continue to holler insults at the wolves, mostly because it makes him feel better, but also in hopes of it actually working
.
1d10; 1d20; 1d6 → [7] = (7)
1d10; 1d20; 1d6 → [17] = (17)
1d10; 1d20; 1d6 → [4] = (4)

[Man my hit rolls... I am just dreading when you finally get some teeth on me... I'm hoping I can get some of the other party members to tank for me! Or Pyros will have to find some leather armour and a ring of protection lol!]

[Ooc: Wow. I was going to say something about your luck, but I think you just jinxed yourself...

Don't worry about tanks, we have a super-tank played by Namenlos once the party assembles. Straight warr w 2-H sword wep specialization and a +1 sword... and did I mention he has 18/92 for strength? His minimum damage with his favorite weapon is 9...]

Pyros dodges another attack from the black wolf, who seems to be driving him into the leader. The Kender stabs at the white wolf to keep it back, but the creature knowingly impales itself on the point of his weapon in order to get close enough to reach him! Taking the wound in stride, it crunches savagely down on the smaller creature’s shoulder, the slavering bite encompassing almost half of Pyros’ body!

Some slight resistance shields him for a brief moment and the pale-blue glow returns for but an instant before flashing out of existence. He feels the teeth dig in and his bones grinding together beneath the tremendous pressure as intense pain lances through him. Twisting and turning the point of his Hoopak into the beast, he finally inflicts enough pain of his own to force it to let go. Stepping back the creature glares at him with golden eyes above a jaw dripping with the Kender’s own bright blood. It hardly seems to consider the patch of its own vital fluid spreading along it’s snowy limb.

At the same time the grey wolf assaults Elsa, but she is able to keep it back with the aid of her shield. She feints and swings and uses the motion more to gain ground, since the shot falls far from her target. Cautiously he follows her steps, wincing from his powerful wounding. You ok back there? The halfling asks, concern thick in her voice. Though they are making headway, the wolves appear very adept at cutting them off. Now all the members of each group are injured in some way, and the black wolf passes a quick look at the Alpha for direction.

[Ooc: Well you only need 9, I wasn't going to last forever lol.
Can you parry without a shield?
I'm thinking it would take quite a bit of time to try and grab a torch and light it.
Can you parry while searching in your backpack?]

[Ooc: yeah, you can parry with either a weapon or shield. Parrying adds an AC bonus of half your level, so +2 in ypur case, dropping your AC to 4. You can't move, attack or take any other action, though.

The Tumbling nwp lets you improve your AC by 4 if you do nothing but dodge, so something to think about in the future if you want to keep on w/o armor.

Getting the torch out would be 1 round, lighting it would be 1 round.]

"Yeow!" Pyros cannot hide his emotions, as they are always on his sleeve.

"Let's get to that river, hopefully they cannot bite and swim at the same time."

[1d10] = 7; [1d20] = 20; [1d6] = 6

Pyros wants to try to hit W1 again.

"C'mon you common flea bitten town dogs!

[If we push to move faster, it will make us more susceptible to a hit?
Wish I had the fire idea before I was trail rations lol...]

[OOC: Welp, there’s our crit and our fumble! Hefty damage on your shot too :D

Yeah, this is an odd predicament movement wise. Normally it wouldn’t matter as you could use 1/3 of your movement to back away, but since you would be backing towards an enemy, that’s not really an option. Moving forward past an enemy isn’t really possible either unless you just bolt and run, but they can still try to block you. Your biggest problems are that you are surrounded, outnumbered, and their movement speed is 3x your max… If any one of these was not the case, you’d probably be able to just bolt in-between two of them... doing so would give each one you passed a free attack at +2 (since your back would be turned as you ran by)

I actually had them approaching you two slowly at first, thinking you’d go for something sneaky like fire or the river and giving Elsa time to pump out a few buffs… Instead you attacked them at range which caused them to try to close the distance as fast as possible 8-O eep! ]

Things don’t start off so well for the diminutive pair when the grey wolf manages to snag Elsa’s leg, sinking his teeth in near her thigh. She grunts with pain and bashes at him with her mace, but he lets go in time to avoid the blow.

Angry and frustrated by all of this, Pyros takes a risk and gives the huge wolf a slight opening intentionally. As soon as the creature lunges, he brings the tip of his hoopak up, bracing the sling-end into the ground like a pike and falling backwards. The gamble works, and the wolf impales himself through the side of the neck, while the Kender miraculously avoids injury! Thrashing, it claws at the weapon and is able to work it loose. It backs away coughing for a brief moment, giving Pyros time to rise and retrieve his weapon.

The black wolf takes the opportunity to attack Pyros from the other side. The combination of its injuries and the Kender moving to retrieve his Hoopak cause it not only to miss, but to fall prone! The Alpha emits a low gurgling growl, injured quite badly now. It looks at its companions, seemingly assessing the total damage.

Arooooooo!

Just then, another howl from deep in the woods echoes. Oh gods… not more of them! Elsa wails in despair. The standing wolves turn their heads to the trees, and the grey creature looks back to the Alpha. One sharp bark from him, and the two disengage from the small folk. The midnight creature is still getting to its feet.

==========
Init:
W3: 5
Elsa (2+7): 9
Pyros (7+4): 11
W1: 11
W2: 13

W3 attacks Elsa. Need 11: 15, hit for 6 damage!

Elsa attacks W3. Need 11: 6, miss!

Pyros attacks W1. Need 12: [1d20] = 20, possible Crit! Hits for [1d6] = 6
Crit verification: Crit ver: [1d20]=16 Crit verified! Roll dmg twice! [1d6] = 6 (orig roll) + Crit extra dmg [1d6] = 4: Total 10 dmg! W1 is Hurt Badly

S W1 attacks Pyros. Need 9: [1d20] = 3: Miss!

W2 attacks Pyros: Need 9: [1d20] = 1 Possible fumble!
[1d20] = 15: Fumble verified! The dire wolf falls prone!

Something calls from the woods. W1 and W3 disengage using the withdraw maneuver, W2 is prone.

[OOC: Wow. I rolled that as a ‘brief encounter’ where they’d be called away after a certain amount of time (7 rnds). I was beginning to wonder if Elsa would make it that long… Good thing I only rolled up 3 wolves!

Regarding Crits:
I roll a second d20 to verify a critical hit or fumble. If the second roll is 2-19, the crit or fumble is verified and proceeds as normal (roll damage twice for crit, dm determines fumble results). If a 1 is rolled after a natural 20, the strike is just a normal hit; but if a consecutive 20 is then it is considered a SuperCrit and damage is rolled three times! Fumbles work the opposite. Double 1s = SuperFumble meaning two fumble results are used (i.e dropping a weapon and falling prone). A 1 followed by a 20 is just a miss.]

[More than 3 would have been disasterous! Would having a touch lit help? Also that would be a club right?

It felt right, and looked like it was paying off at first... ]

"Let him be, I think we all need to go lick our wounds. Maybe we should stick to the water." Pyros will look extremely relieved.

He will grab Elsa's hand arm and start to angle towards the shore, keeping his eyes on the prone monster.

[OOC: Yeah, a torch could count as a club and would be useful for keeping them back a bit, though they would basically make saving throws or morale checks to resist the fire keeping them at bay. The problem with using a torch as a club is that it isn’t as sturdy and might break more easily.

I’ve got to say, you did extremely well given the circumstances after melee closed. The back-to-back idea helped a lot to keep them from getting those flanking bonuses.]

Elsa needs no convincing to get away from the canine, and the two hurry towards the river. The fallen wolf stands and shakes itself furiously for a moment. It growls at them angrily, but eventually returns to the rest of the pack which quickly disperses into the woods. Once to the water and the danger has passed, Elsa half-sits, half-falls down on the rocky embankment. You were very brave back there… almost like you weren’t scared at all… Here… she calls out words of magic and touches his arm. A warm glow encompasses him and seeps into his flesh, healing his wound almost completely. She does as much for herself, but she is still in pretty rough shape.

==========
Elsa casts Cure Lt Wounds on Pyros [1d8] = 4. Pyros is healed of 4 dmg. 14/16. Pyros is now only Barely Scratched

Elsa casts Cure Lt Wounds on herself [1d8] = 5. Esa is healed of 5 dmg. Elsa is still Hurt Badly

"AHHHH That is MUCH better! Are up for lunch?" He will poke around for rations or fresh food from the tower, if he grabbed any.

"Fear, oh yes I have heard that before, we Kender do not seem to be struck by this silly emotion quite the rest of the populace of Krynn. My only fear is when I will take my next warm bath, and sleep on my next soft bed."

[Well I am happy that I thought of that one at least. For some reason I knew you posted the map for a reason and even pointed out the terrain lol.]

Pyros hauls out some of his rations, while the halfling stares at him incredulously. Food? After all that... we just... we almost got KILLED! She shakes her head in disbelief. Well I don't know what kind of place Krynn is or what the... what you really are, but most reasonable creatures have this thing called Fear! It helps keep us alive sometimes! She finally winds down a little from the ordeal, and begins to breathe more normally.

Standing from the rocky ground, she fishes some more of the 'travel pockets' of food from her pack. Handing him one, she takes another for herself, muttering something about the body needing to replenish itself after all of that healing... and bleeding... I guess we should keep moving, I don't want those things trying to make snacks out of us again... And yeah, let's stick closer to the water this time. I'm not sure how far I'd be able to swim in this armor, but I'd rather try that than face those things again... she shivers, and it has nothing to do with the cool air.

"These are so delicious! Am I ever glad I found you." Pyros will be beaming with delight as he eats the alternative to trail rations.

"I am ready to go whenever you are. Do you need help wrapping up any of those bites?

Pyros will try to find something to fiddle with while walking, preferably something that will make small repeated noises, that may annoy Elsa a bit.

Once they start walking, or if Elsa needs to rest for longer, he will ask a couple questions.

"Where did you say you were from again? I am just so confused how you do not know about Kender, everywhere I go I always get, oh great it's a Kender, or keep your purses close it's a Kender, or stop making those stupid faces at me I'm the Head of the town guard!"

I'll do it. Keep an eye out for more of those wolves, she says taking off the bloody robe and her chain shirt. She was actually quite athletic looking as he could see through the tears in her linen shirt underneath. She quickly bound up the worst of her injuries and replaces her armor and bloody robes. She takes the time to patch him up as well, while he continues to ramble on. Once she is done, Pyros digs out his playing cards and begins to shuffle and cut them with one hand while he eats with the other.

Hilldale, she replies absently. The Kender finishes his second meal in an hour and begins to feel a little stuffed. Using two hands now he shuffles and riffles the cards noisily cutting them in complex patterns as his fingers walk and twist around the deck. it sounds like getting into trouble is something of a habit for you... she remarks when he starts talking about the town guard.

While their injuries prove a minor hindrance, a grey wall comes into view to the East as the Sun hangs low in the sky. Please let that be real, Elsa murmurs. It is still too far away to tell exactly what it is but it might be a city wall. Whatever it is, it will take at least until just after dark to reach unless they pick up the pace.

[Elsa heal check on self and Pyros [1d20] = 1[1d3] = 1[1d20] = 15[1d3] = 1: pass, Elsa gains 1 hp. Fail, Pyros' wounds bound but no hp gained.]

Pyros will perk up when he sees the wall thinking it has to be a city wall.

He starts to jabber about his last visit visit to a city. About the sights, sounds, and smells.

If it's been more than 4 hrs he will pull out some rations again.

[I really see this Kender loving the finer things. And hating to be hungry.]

[Ooc: Fair enough. Halflings, Kender included, have pretty huge appetites for their stature ;) ]

Just as he is about to eat again, they near what turns out to be a small-ish town as far as he can tell. The river passes north of it, with a headgate letting water spill south to fill a 20' wide moat. The gate nearest them was open, letting in sheep and their shepherds. Steep reddish cliffs rose above the Eastern side, and turned to mountains beyond. Farmland spread to the south along with generous pasture. The sun was quite low now, and if they didn't hustle they would arrive after dark.
