Gallath spends 7 minutes looking over the chest carefully, but he can't find any traps on it. It would also appear that the chest is unlocked.

While he is busy doing this, Thaddeus continues tinkering with the orb. He makes some progress, as the orb suddenly begins speaking again in Eonian. When it's done, Thaddeus translates for the benefit of the others.

"I received another shipment from Zera the other day. She wanted me to identify them for her again, as usual. I'm busy with my own research, but...I suppose I just can't say no to her. To be honest, I probably needed the break. Kaakos has been getting on my nerves again about my two more recent guinea pigs. I know he's just being cautious, but I cannot afford to slow down now. My experiments on the oni and the trolls haven't produced anything useful yet. I need something with stronger regenerative properties to work on. Yes, I understand the danger involved. Although I imagine if things get out of hand, I could always turn one on the other and let the two of them battle it out. Hopefully it won't come to that.

"Anyway...back to today's task. The results were interesting. The bracers are useless. They increase magical healing, which doesn't help me or Zera any, as neither of us are clerics. But she could probably make a good deal selling them to one of the churches. Hmm, maybe I can talk her into using them to bribe a cleric to help me make more Helmed Horrors. They have proven loyal and useful so far, even better than my hellhounds.

"The sword is ancient and obviously Elven in origin. I can only imagine where my dear Zera looted it from. It holds the 'flame tongue' enchantment, which might make it useful if the trolls start to act up again. Not that I know how to use a sword, but perhaps I can give it to one of my horrors. I'm not sure they're smart enough to know how to activate it, though.

"The cloak was the most interesting to me. It imparts a form of controlled lycanthropy on the wearer, allowing them to transform into a wolf. I've experimented a little with lycanthropes, as they have regenerative powers, as well. Unfortunately, they cannot regrow back limbs. Furthermore, the cloak does not seem to bestow regeneration either, unlike true lycanthopy..."

The voice cuts out here. "Hmm, that was the most recent entry. I'm not sure how to access anything earlier than that," Thaddeus says.

========

Gallath makes a Find Trap check [TN 50] on the chest (1d100): Result secret. He finds no traps.

"Do you know when was this last record recorded?" Baeros asks Thaddeus. "Do you see the bracers he was talking about nearby? They would probably help Jocelyn. And we can look which armor holds an elven blade." Then he looks at Granite and asks Jocelyn "Hmm... Do you know if healing potion works on unconscious people as well as it works on conscious ones?"

"A cloak, bracers, and a sword. Gallath, do you know what's in that chest yet?" Jocelyn asks before she turns her attention to Baeros. "He isn't dead, so it should work on him. It would probably only wake him up though. He'll still be injured, and there isn't anything I can do about it until I get some rest."

"I'm betting the chest is either empty or contain the bracers or cloak, a sword would probably not fit inside unless it is a small one." Drav says as he looks around, "Which brings the question of, where will they remaining items be?"

*Drav looks for any other "containers" in the room (shelves, closets, anything that could hold anything)*

Baeros rolls his eyes, "Haven't you listened?!? One of the armors like those we fought has the sword!" and to Jocelyn he says, "Will Granite survive without the potion? If he does then it will be waste to give it to him if it only wakes him up."

"Well, there is a problem with that, do we even have proof that the armors were what h referred to as 'horrors'? Who's to say there aren't some more dangerous things in this place," Drav says to Baeros, "As for the other two, we need to be a bit careful. If someone finds the cloak, we need to make sure we don't activate it or someone might get hurt."

Drav looks about the room again, but the only two containers are the chest that Gallath is looking over and the drawer in the desk.

"The date given was using the old Eonian calendar," Thaddeus says to Baeros. "I'm trying to calculate what day it would be in our own calendar. Let's see..." He pauses and looks surprised. "Hmm, if I'm right...this message was recorded only three days before Carnage began.'

(OOC: I never said it was a small chest, it's potentially big enough to put a sword into.)

"He is in stable condition now," Jocelyn explains. "So, he will eventually wake up on his own. Honestly, it might be better to leave him in his room as we continue to search for the cannon. Val can guard the room."

Baeros looks at Jocelyn for a long time considering her words, "It could be very dangerous splitting up. Especially with this place full of magic... But on the other hand, dragging him with us might injure him even more... So if that's your decision so be it." He then looks at Gallath trying to open the chest but speaks to Drav, "They were the horrors he referred to. Trust me. This is his study and they were guarding it. Maybe the Wyvern was not the only one in the mansion. Maybe he had some apprentices and this was the study of one of them."

Ouragana had been listening to the orb when the voice was first heard, and is now thinking hard. "Kaakos, Kaakos... she mutters, that name rings a bell, but I'm not sure. Zera- not so much " she rakes her brain for amything in Ancien Eonian History that is connected to these names, or similar ones.

Prificiency check Ancien History: 1d20=5.

Drav opens the drawer on the desk easily, as it was not locked. Inside are two small items. One is a key of steel, with a decorative heart on the end. The other resembles a bishop piece in a chess game, but with a long spike on the bottom.

Meanwhile, Gallath opens the chest carefully. Fortunately it doesn't explode or anything like that. Inside are a pair of bracers, a sheathed long sword and a heavy cloak.

The bracers are made of leather and are covered in intricate designs. A large blue gemstone is embedded on the center of each bracer that seems to glow softly with its own light.

The long sword appears to be of elven make with a dragon motif. The crossguard is a pair of dragon heads and at the end of the hilt is a smaller dragon with wings spread.

Finally, the cloak is of simple design, but is fairly heavy, as if it was meant for a much colder climate than this one. It is made of fur--possibly wolf fur, but it's hard to be certain.

Ouragana thinks back to her studies of ancient Eonia, but cannot recall ever hearing the name Kaakos before. The name Zera, however, is familiar. Zera Doubloon was known as the Pirate Queen back in that time. The island of Doubloon is even named for her, as it was said to once be her base of operations. The stories claim she ran an entire fleet of pirate ships and was constantly a thorn in the side of the authorities. Although the Eonians had magic on their side, she always seemed to have equal magical power to keep out of their reach.

After the Carnage War, she pretty much disappeared. Nobody knows what became of her.

=========

Ouragana performs an Ancient History check [TN 15] (1d20): 5, pass. She remembers the tales of Zera Doubloon, the Pirate Queen.

After s while of thinking, Ouragana begins talking to the other mage, cutting across any other conversation in the room. "Thaddeus, do you think the Zera mentioned in the record could be Zera Dubloon? Nobody knew where her magic came from, what if this was the place?"
