CH. 12: Wyvern's Island

Jocelyn hurries over to the fallen and broken form of Val, and kneels down by her. Laying hands upon the half-orc, she prays to Octhanus to spare her life. Val suddenly comes to, in horrible pain, groggy and exhausted from her near death experience.

Ouragana moves forward, wand at he ready. She never fires, though, as the trolls do not attack. One turns to run away, getting an axe slash in the back for his trouble by Brock. "Where are you going, you lilly-livered pansy! Come back and fight!" The troll makes it pretty close to the treeline, until Dahn shoots its in the back with his heavy crossbow. At first, it appears the troll may fall, but his wounds suddenly start to heal and he keeps going.

Baeros is about to help Val, but then sees Brock needs his help more. But then leaps to Val's defense anyway, cutting the troll down. However, the two 'dead' trolls suddenly start to heal up. They don't get back up, but it won't be long before they do.

By the time Gallath tears off a piece of his cloak, soaks it in lamp oil and ties it to an arrow, most of the action has already passed.

Thaddeus keeps his flaming sphere where it is. "Step back from their corpses," the mage warns. "I will consume their bodies with the flame before they can get back up! But if you are too close, you will be burned, as well."

Jocelyn moves 20 feet to the east and casts Cure Light Wounds on Val, restoring her to 1 HP automatically. Val is now conscious but near death and suffering from severe fatigue.
Ouragana moves 5 feet south and readies the wand, holding an attack.
Gallath tears off a piece of his cloak and soaks it in lamp oil before tying it to an arrow and lighting it.
Thaddeus maintains the Flaming Sphere in its current position.
----Troll 01 automatically fails its save. It takes (1d4+1): 2 damage.
----Troll 03 saves vs. spell (1d20): 3, fail. It takes (1d4+1): 4 damage.
Troll 03 regenerates 3 HP and turns around to run away.
----Brock gets a free attack. He swings his battle axe with great skill (+1) while blessed (+1) against an itchy (+4) Troll 03 from behind (+2) (1d20+8): 24, hit for (1d8+4): 12 damage. Troll 03 is now near death.
Troll 03 runs 120 feet to the south.
Brock has no targets in range.
Baeros leaps over Val and defends her by swinging his long sword with great strength (+1) while blessed (+1) at an itchy (+4) Troll 02 (1d20+6): 14, hit for (1d12+2): 6 damage. He then stabs with great strength (+1) while blessed (+1) at an itchy (+4) Troll 02 (1d20+6): 18, hit for (1d8+2): 9 damage. Troll 02 falls.
Troll 01 regenerates 3 HP but remains unconscious.
Takit has no targets in range.
Dahn fires his heavy crossbow with great aim (+1) while blessed (+1) against an itchy (+4) Troll 03 from behind (+2) at short range (1d20+8): 25, hit for (1d8+1): 2 damage.
Troll 02 regenerates 3 HP but remains unconscious.

(OOC: BishGada, your IC post said Baeros would attack Troll 03, but your OOC post said he would attack Troll 02, so I'm confused. I decided to have him attack Troll 02.)

Baeros knocks an arrow and fires at the running troll. "Is she OK?" He asks Jocelyn. Then he tries to fire another arrow.

Yes I mixed up the numbers. The plan was that Takit will continue attacking the same troll he had bitten before and Baeros will attack the troll that threatened Brock.

If the troll will fall Baeros will run to his body with a burning torch (I think someone lit a torch)severe his head and burn the body starting from the neck.

Jocelyn helps Val up, and starts ushering her back as commanded. "She needs rest," she says. "Everyone move back so that Thaddeus can do his fire thing!"

Gallath fires his fire arrow at the fleeing troll.

Without a word, Ouragana hands the wand back to Thaddeus, then runs over to Jocelyn to help her support Val.

"Get back here!" Brock demands, chasing after the fleeing troll. Of course, even without his limp and the extra weight he is carrying, there was never any way he could hope to come close to catching it. After a brief jog, he stops to catch his breath.

With Brock away from the first troll, Thaddeus gestures and his flaming sphere moves over its corpse, incinerating it. The other dead troll, the one between Takit and Baeros, continues to regenerate at an astounding pace.

Jocelyn grabs Val and helps drag her away from the other troll corpse. Ouragana hands Thaddeus his wand back.

Meanwhile, Gallath takes aim at the fleeing troll, but the burning arrow actually singes his hand a bit, causing him to accidentally drop the bow altogether. Granite pulls his flask of Greek fire from his pouch, in case it is needed.

The living troll, still regenerating, continues to flee unabated. It disappears into the brush before Baeros can take any shots. He loses sight of it among the trees.

Thaddeus prepares to move the Flaming Sphere.
Brock moves 40 feet south.
Thaddeus moves the Flaming Sphere north 5 feet, incinerating the remains of Troll 01. Troll 01 dies.
Jocelyn drags Val five feet north.
Ouragana moves 25 feet west and returns Thaddeus' wand to him.
Gallath fires a burning sheaf arrow from his short bow at the fleeing back (+2) of an itchy (+4) Troll 03 with elven grace (+1) while blessed (+1) at medium range (-2) (1d20+6): 7, critical fumble! He drops his bow.
Dahn retrieves his Greek fire flask.
Troll 03 regenerates 3 HP and runs 120 feet to the south (leaves map).
Baeros can no longer see the target.
Troll 02 regenerates 3 HP.
Troll 01 is dead.
Baeros can no longer see the target.
The Irritation spell cast by Ouragana ends.

"Get back here, Brock!" Jocelyn calls out. "Just let it go."

Baeros goes to the troll body and severe his head. Then tries to burn it in the neck.

Brock drops to his knees, panting hard and wincing from his wounds. Baeros chops the head off the dead troll by him, but he has nothing to burn it with, nor does anyone around him have any lit torches. Despite the decapitation, the ranger sees that the troll's head and body are still healing at a rapid rate.

"Stand back, please," Thaddeus repeats to Baeros. "Else you'll be burned, as well." When Baeros and his dog finally step away from the dead troll, Thaddeus rolls the flaming sphere over the troll's corpse, incinerating it for good, as well. Then he snaps his fingers, and the sphere vanishes.

At around that point, the power of Octhanus fades from the party.

Brock, having caught his breath, gets to his feet and turns back to the others. "Tracks!" he says. "We can track it back to its lair and kill it before it fully heals. Maybe take out any others there, too."

"We should really press on to the mansion," Thaddeus argues. "That's our mission here, not hunting down trolls."

"Don't be stupid Thaddeus, as far as they both at the same direction I don't see no reason not to follow the trolls tracks." Baeros says in his usual politeness.
"How is Val doing?" Baeros asks Jocelyn with concern.

"I doubt that troll is coming back, so there is no reason to follow it," Jocelyn says. "And Val is going to need some rest. I can't do anything else for her."

"Rest? We only just arrived. I would like to make at least some progress before stopping to make camp," Thaddeus says with a frown. "Surely we can press on."

He shades his eyes and looks up into the sky. Only a few minutes have passed since they landed on the island, it's still only around 9 AM or so, based on the sun's position in the sky.

"Pressing on will not be possible, with two severely wounded peopple" Ouragana says, pointing out Brock and Val. "All we could do is scout the terrain and look for a way over these mountains. Clear a path maybe to go on more quickly tomorrow. And perhaps it wouldn't be such a bad idea to follow the troll's tracks, if we could kill it, the paths they have made can make our going easier than having to hack throught the jungle"

(OOC: Does Ouragana know if the magic compass shows her only the direction towards her destination or the best path?)

Baeros looks at Val measuring her wounds. "Hmm... Jocelyn, don't you have any potion or spell to make her strong enough to walk? She and Brock will stay behind if anything comes at us. They can fire the bows. Ouragana is right. We should follow the nasty troll as far as his trail matches the direction of the mansion."
