"I agree that the Northerner may cause us some trouble" Liri gives her opinion. "And the dwarf hasn't said a word, so my suggestion would be to hire Galanis and Calah, which seem reasonably competent and social, and the balding man."

"I agree. Calah will be an interesting addition, and Galanis seems sturdy enough." She grins and sits down next to Liri.

"The dwarf seems unfriendly to me as well," Papa says. "I would recommend the short man, Egg."

Fraso seems satisfied with the suggested additions, and heads off to speak with Baratus about paperwork, leaving the party alone for the moment to go tell the new hires.

[OOC] The plan at the moment is to head out in the morning. If there is any special equipment you wish to bring, now would be an excellent time to arrange for it. [/OOC]

Liri will stock up on darts, she wants to have two dozen in all. She will also buy a palm-sized mirror and protective case. I gather that Fraso will take care of trail food and such?

(I used to have a round mirrior with a unicorn motif back in a white leather slip-on case - I wonder where it is now. Probably in an unused handbag.)

Knowing that they are about to travel, Galanis has Armor spell prepared and he casts it on himself. Besides he would buy a skin of wine and some healing potions if such are available.

I found a few issues with Angels sheet, so I uploaded one to my Google drive and shared it.

Right, think she needs a short sword as well as a long sword, after all, with all the dropping going on!

So sword, scabbard etc is all she needs.

Morning finds the group prepared for departure. Hiric, with his usual efficiency, has prepared the restored wagon for travel. Without the previous cargo, the wagon seems quite empty, although a portion of it is taken up by the group's provisions and gear.
Fraso looks a bit worried as he mounts the wagon - his last foray into the wilds ended rather unpleasantly - but he seems determined. Hiric has acquired a sword from somewhere – a standard-issue legion gladius – and there is a crossbow strapped to the bench next to him.

There appears to be no sign of Salia until she pops up from between some bundles in the wagon bed. The child continues flitting about the wagon, checking to make sure that everything is tied down securely. There is no discernable method to her preparations – her movements appear so random that it is hard to keep track of where she is at any given moment – but clearly she has a system, because things are getting done.

Maughus stands next to his shaggy pony, carefully adjusting the saddle and talking to the creature companionably.

The town gates are closed, but men are standing by to open them.

Galanis looks at Salia with wonder and asks if she need help. After helping somewhat with the ties he adjusts his horse saddle and then waits patiently, drifting to day dreaming, to Angel's orders.

Angel draws up Praesul sharply as she surveys the others, her new blade sits at her right side, a short sword she found in the armory, the blade was old but definately well used, somehow she felt the blade had a history, just like her.

"Ok, we have a long ride, we need to keep Master Fraso safe, and to do that..." She glances at Salia with an almost grin. "We need to keep this wagon moving."

"Right Calah, ride up with Liri, keep reasonably close to the wagon, but you two can be reasonably quiet, you are our eyes. Maughus, I assume you are riding point?" She adds, looking at the tracker.

"Galanis stick close to the wagon, take the left side, I'll take the right... Egg, Bastian, take the rear." She glances at the wagon again, "The wagon is off limits.." She says more for the benefit of the newcomers. "We have enough to do."

"Hiric, if you want to learn how to use that thing, ask." Moving closer to Salia she palms her a dagger (can we assume she got a spare?). "Take this please.." She grins. "I'm glad to see you safe."

Liri had observed the rest of the group in silence. When angel gives her orders, she nods and guides her mare Casta in front of the wagon. "Are you right-handed or left-handed?" she asks Calah in her musical voice that still bears a slight accent.

Galanis positions himself at the post given to him without any words only making sure he can get clear line of sight to the other guards.

(OOC: Galanis learned today the Armor spell and already had cast it on his horse 'Gale' when he had saddled it )

Following Angel's directions, Calah falls in aside of Liri. In response to Liri's question about her handedness, Calah says "Depends which hand you tie behind my back." Her expression starts as a smirk, but easily spreads into a good-humored smile instead, now that the group is on the road.

"Then let me ride left, because I haven't succeeded in making both hands equal yet" Liri says to Calah, returning her smile.

Once the group has mounted up, the gate is opened and the guards wave them through, closing the gate behind. The open road beckons. This far north the roads are not up to typical imperial standards of maintenance, but they are passable, particularly those used by the local merchants.

Maughus, as is his habit, rides out front, but after only a few minutes, comes to a halt in the road. He waits there wordlessly until the main group closes on him and says: “So. Where are we going?”

Fraso, looking embarrassed, clears his throat and says: “Rauxes, eventually. But we are to be met on the way by a cohort of legionnaires who will escort us to Eastfair. Best we make our way south, for now. The cohort will make best speed to meet us, by way of the fifty sixth imperial highway. Can you find that?”

“Fifty sixth, yes, I know it. If we head south we can hit the fifty sixth near Vatana in two, maybe three days. You can wait there for your escort.”

“If our escort is not in Vatana when we arrive, we must head west to meet them. Our errand is urgent.”

Maughus merely grunts in response, and nudges his pony to start it moving again. For a long moment he stares sidelong at the wagon as his pony walks slowly south along the road. Then he rides off to resume his place at the head of the column.

The road is decent, and fairly well maintained, and the wagon makes good time for the first half of the day. It is Hiric who calls for a halt near midday, for a meal. Maughus fusses and rushes everyone through their meal, insisting on cutting the meal short, so that the group can reach a place he knows before sunset; an abandoned villa a mile or two off the road.

The villa is a ruin, for the most part, due to lack of maintenance rather than some natural or man-made catastrophe. But the outer walls still stand, and the well is still serviceable.

As the group files through the gates, Maughus pulls up and waits. As Angel passes him, he whispers: “Where’s Salia?”
"No matter where you go, there you are."
