WotL OOC Thread

This 2E Dragonlance game is set in the city of Haven, during the War of the Lance. Haven is a city undergoing great upheaval. First massive numbers of refugees pour in, then the city is conquered by a draconic army. Can our heroes survive under this dark occupation?

Indeed, sorry about the delay. There's a thread in the Tavern forum that explained my absence.

Ah, after all this time, someone finally asks--sort of, in a round about way--the barbarian's name!

I was wondering how much longer I'd have to refer to him as 'the barbarian.' :D

Oh wait, this thread's for OOC chat.

So it sounds like everyone is going to the mines but Darga and Gregeddin, who are going out into the wilderness. Is that correct?

By the way, I'd like to introduce a new player, BishGada. Not sure how we'll work him into the game just yet, but he's displayed interest in playing a mage.

I guess I was unaware that setting snares and doing some simple foraging would take so long. If it's between going to the mines with the rest of the group and failing to find food the hard way, I think that Darga would rather go to the mines. It's not too late, is it?

And welcome, BishGada!

It's not too late, no. Yeah, the description for the proficiency says it takes several hours to set up even a single snare.

Jeez, I should read the descriptions. I mean, I don't imagine that it's a thing that you can do in half an hour or anything, but "several hours" seems a bit ridiculous. Yes, then, Darga will be going with the others to the mine.

Okay, that ends chapter one. I'll calculate and post XP, and have chapter two up soon, as well as some of my thoughts on the game thus far. Stay tuned.

Okay, XP is updated. While I update the other threads (like the Calendar, etc.), I thought I'd go ahead and write out my thoughts on the game.

The title of this chapter is a pun, of course, of 'heaven and hell.' But it also emphasizes the awful living conditions in the city of Haven, as well.

I'm not sure what possessed me to start the game with everyone separated. My original plan was to have you all be on the same street just as a riot broke out. I wanted to see how each of your characters would react to this; would you side with the Holy Guard or the refugees; or just stay out of it altogether? It was actually pretty last minute I decided, on a whim I suppose, to have each of you start by waking up wherever you slept the previous night. I later absorbed the planned riot into the Darewind quest.

Or maybe it wasn't whim...I think maybe I just thought it would be an interesting contrast, as each PC lived in such a different way. Kynaston had a house, which is more than some can say, but he lives in it alone and it's filled with bad memories. Haahqae had his own room at a filled up inn, which he earned through creativity and persuasion. Kendra sleeps at her boyfriend's house, which is far nicer and less crowded than her own. Gregeddin lives at home with his parents. Khush was camping on the side of the road. And Coroccoco slept under a hedge in the park. It seemed all of the levels of wealth were covered, from homelessness to having a soft, warm bed. I also felt it really emphasized the situation of each PC. Haahqae is seeking to improve his station, Kendra has a good life that she doesn't actually want, Gregeddin wants to get out on his own, and so forth.

I don't know if anyone noticed, but the number in each character's address was their player's post count at the time. (So Kynaston lives in 12 River Way, as Just_Ice had a post count of 12 at the time.)

Kyne's encounter with Pen and the old woman was rolled up randomly. I got 'merchant' and couldn't think of what to do with that. So I rolled again and got 'named NPC' and picked Pen from the list. It was an interesting dilemma, because anyone who knows anything about kender would just assume Pen was guilty. But in truth, he was innocent. Pen will likely pop up again later, as he did during the riot. He has a quest to go with him, but it's way too hard for a level 1 party. Maybe later...then Kynaston might have a shot at winning back his sword. ;)

Gregeddin's encounter with a child thief and a guard was also rolled up randomly. I got 'Holy Guard' and decided he was chasing a child who stole some bread. Like with the old woman and Pen, there wasn't really a 'right' way to handle this. It was more of a way to give me insight, to see what kind of person Gregeddin was. (For those wondering, the crying little girl in the jail that Kendra saw was the same one from this scene.)

Bear's mine quest was just one of many. It originally had nothing to do with Zivilyn; I would have had the old man appear regardless of their first quest, to give Coroccoco a chance to convert whenever NoTrammeling felt she was ready.

Daxia's quest, was another one. I think NoTrammeling might have got a little greedy, trying to carry on multiple quests at once. :P

Kelryn Darewind was the holder of yet another quest. (Yes, there were quite a few quests available; several the party hasn't even discovered yet.) You almost have to wonder if he somehow knew what the consequences of his arrest might be...

Anyway, I really have to say, I'm quite pleased with this game so far. No complaints at all. Everyone really seems to be getting into character, there's lots of interaction going around, and now we're beginning our first real quest.

What about the rest of you? As this is a new game and many of you haven't gamed with me before, I'm quite interested in everyone's feedback. Thoughts, questions, opinions, criticisms, etc.? Let me know.

I should have chapter two up later today.

By the way, now is probably a good time to decide on a marching order for the mines, as well as light sources and how they'll be distributed.
