WotL OOC Thread

This 2E Dragonlance game is set in the city of Haven, during the War of the Lance. Haven is a city undergoing great upheaval. First massive numbers of refugees pour in, then the city is conquered by a draconic army. Can our heroes survive under this dark occupation?

Darga's backstory

Darga is a survivor. As the youngest of 13 children, he left home to find a place for himself in the world--one that did not involve receiving the last and least of everything. Of course, life away from his clan was, in many ways, harder than it was with it. But these were different challenges, ones that he could meet on his own terms. After setting out on his own, he quickly learned to hunt and survive in the wild and to deal with the civilizations of other races. As such, he's spent the last seven years wandering from town to town, working odd jobs that nobody else wants, scavenging and stealing when necessary, and keeping his head down. He's quickly learned the prejudice that others have for his kind, and tries to be as unobtrusive and unassuming as possible in an effort to avoid being thrown out of yet another town. He's been in Haven for a while now and likes it there, and does not want to find another place to live.

Darga appears to be an emaciated dwarf with long, lank brown hair, a frizzy beard, and muddy brown eyes. He makes an effort to keep himself cleaner than the usual gully dwarf, but with his patched and worn clothing, he still looks somewhat ragged.

Darga is quiet and withdrawn, preferring to let others speak. If addressed, he is usually friendly and polite, but is comfortable talking at length only with people he trusts. In his actions, he's pragmatic and unafraid to do what needs doing...unless it means fighting, but even then he'll step up if there's no other choice.

Questions for JadedDM
Should I be posting Darga's information in the relevant threads (Character Stats, Description, etc.) rather than clogging up the OOC forum here?

I've been reading the Chapter 1 thread to catch up with what's going on, but do you have a way of introducing Darga in mind? I don't want to step on anyone's toes by jumping in out of the blue, and if his introduction makes sense for what's going on, so much the better.

I'm keen to jump to the evening at this point iof everyone else is, next logical step in the Mines plotline is to sober up that barbarian which might be accomplished by then? And certainly Coco has things to do.

In the evening Haahqae has an owed performance to the Steel Tankard to pay for his room and some food.

Perhaps meeting darga in the Tankard would be a fitting introduction whil. Haahqae performs?

You can post his physical description in the Character Description thread. Everything else you can post here or PM it to me if you'd prefer it remain private.

That's actually a good idea from mgbevan. As the quest the party is about to embark on was first discovered by Haahqae, and he recruited everyone else into it, he's as good as anyone to recruit Darga.

Speaking of Darga, a couple of things:

Not sure how he got a CON of 15?

You listed his age as 23. Did you mean that's the human equivalent of his age? Because I think a 23 year old Aghar would still be a child; he'd probably be somewhere between 50-60 to be the equivalent of a 23 year old.

You gave him the Survival proficiency, but you need to specify the terrain he is apt at surviving in (i.e., plains, forests, mountains, urban, etc.).

I'll see about getting his stat block up with the others soon. Then, once you've turned in an appearance and personality to go with that history, he'll be ready to go.

Oh, as for the timeskip to this evening, I can set that up today, if you guys like.

Meeting at the Tankard sounds good to me. Although comfortable enough sleeping in the open, Darga probably would enjoy a hot meal and a drink...

I've corrected Darga's constitution to 14 (juggling numbers on a computer with no scratch paper is tough!), specified where he's good at surviving, and put his age up to 63 (I read in Tales of the Lance that after age 25 or so, aghar start getting wrinkles, so I assumed that their lifespan was similar to/shorter than a human's).

I included a bit about Darga's appearance and personality with his backstory, but I can elaborate on these.

Yeah, I use the rules from The Complete Book of Dwarves for gully dwarves instead of the Tales of the Lance's.

Okay, I'm about ready to post his stat block and introduce him to the game, just a couple more issues.

01.) At first level, he starts with 60 thief skill points you can distribute among his thief skills (except Read Languages which remains locked until 4th level). But taking into consideration his racial adjustments, it seems you've only allocated 45 points. That means there are 15 points left unaccounted for. I assume you'd like to put them to good use. :)

02.) A 1st level thief starts with 3 NWP slots, which you've allocated all three to Survival. However, I use the optional rule that states you get a free proficiency with every language slot you get. So that means you get 3 more NWP slots you can add to whatever you like.

That's all. Once these two things are taken care of, that should be the last of it.

All right, I added three more non-weapon proficiencies to Darga's set. He doesn't seem like the type to study language, anyway...

I looked over Darga's thieving skills, and I think I used all 60 skill points. I'll post my breakdown, and maybe you can tell me where I went wrong:

.......base value....racial mods....dexterity (12) mods.......60 points to spend......total
PP.........15..............+10...................--.............................+10..............35
OL.........10...............-5....................--.............................+5...............10
FRT........5................+5....................--.............................+10..............20
MS.........10...............--....................-5.............................+15..............20
HS.........5................-5....................--..............................+20..............20
DN.........15...............--....................--...............................--..............15
CW........60...............-5....................--...............................--..............55
RL..........0...............-25...................--...............................--..............-25

(As he'll be wearing leather armor in most situations where he's thieving, I did not include modifiers for wearing no armor.)

Oh sweet. Should be good/possibly annoying to have a rogue skulking about.

Okay, I suppose I forgot to take into account his low DEX score.

I can't find an acrobatics nwp anywhere. Which book did that come from?

Sorry, that "acrobatics" should be "tumbling". I guess I unconsciously substituted a 3.5e-ism there. It's fixed now.

Okay, and done. He's added to the Character Stats thread.

I'll set up an intro for him now.

So I'm going away this weekend, so I'll be gone for at least 36, if not over 48 hours. Sorry to slow down any RP that may start up.

So I hope all you Canadians had a happy turkey day like me.

I'm kinda surprised that, even considering Thanksgiving, it took this long for someone to prompt me to reveal that waiting around isn't going to get Kendra to join us any time soon.
