CH. 4: Temple of Baerin

Echo looks a little surprised as all the bullywugs pass out. "Uh, I just put them all to sleep," she explains. "I didn't think it would work on all of them. You're free to kill them now without any problems though."

"Nice job!" Hollidan praises. The men quickly rush into the room and kill the bullywugs while they sleep, before they wake back up.

Keet picks up one of their fallen swords and brandishes it with excitement. "Aha! Now Keet is armed!" he exclaims happily.

A quick look around the room reveals little. There is a wooden table with a number of chairs surrounding it. They appear old, but not as old as the temple, suggesting they were brought in more recently. There are double doors to the northeast, as well as to the southern side of the eastern wall.

Nuvain approaches the west wall and touches it. "I feel a draft here," he comments dreamily.

"It's a wall, Nuvain," Gimog points out.

The elf looks over his shoulder at them. "I think there is a secret door here," he explains.

"These bullywugs were probably just making a home out of this place," Echo comments before she turns to the wall that Nuvain is touching. "Push on it, and see what happens," she says. "And, Keet, be careful with that," she adds.

"Whoa, whoa, whoa," Hollidan interrupts. "Let's not go around touching things we aren't sure about just yet, okay?" He shakes his head. "We should probably decide which way we're going first. We don't want to risk leaving our backs exposed to who knows what."

"All right, so then we need to come back to this room," Echo says. "My suggestion is to go the same way that we were going before we ran into those bullywugs," she said.

"Alright," Hollidan says. "Have your kobold do his thing, but be careful. No telling how many more of these things are about," he adds, nodding toward the bullywug corpses.

"All right, Keet," Echo says, motioning to move to the door to the north. "You know what to do."

Keet carefully checks the door. "All good here," he states, returning to his position.

Nodding, Hollidan approaches the door, signals for everyone to get ready, than pushes it open. Inside is a long room, about 75 feet long and 30 feet wide. There are four long tables, each with numerous chairs. There's a single door on the east wall and a double-door to the north.

However, there are at least 20 bullywugs, as well, all seated at the tables, eating and drinking. The room is illuminated by burning candles spread out over the tables. The bullywugs stop what they are doing at once when the party enters and just stares.

"Whoops, wrong room," Hollidan mutters.

Echo pulls out her wand of fire that the Phraise gave her. "Excuse me," she says as she shoves past Keet to stand next to Hollidan. She smiles almost sweetly at the Bullywugs before she points the wand into the room and says, "Firaga!" She directs the suddenly ball of fire to as close to the center of the room as possible to where it won't harm those hanging out in the door way.

Keet quickly dives to the ground and crawls under Nuvain's legs, coming up behind the elf and cowering in the southeastern corner of the room.

"Gimog, up front!" Hollidan calls. "The two of us can keep them bottlenecked!" However, the closest bullywug comes running up and stabs at the paladin with his short sword, cutting into his shoulder. Another comes barreling in and stabs Nuvain in the leg, cutting through his leather armor. A third bullywug comes in soon after, stabbing at Hollidan but is blocked by his shield.

Gimog tries to reach the front-line, but Echo pushes forward first. Although there is nothing stopping Echo from firing her wand from over the heads of her companions, she nevertheless arrogantly walks to the front-line--or tries, as bullywugs are quickly cramming inside. Putting herself right in their line of fire, she then fires a ball of flame into the center of the room with a thundering CRACKA-BOOM! The explosion is massive, not to mention loud enough to wake the dead. Many of the bullywugs are caught in the blast and are blown to pieces. The four tables they had been feasting and drinking at take considerable damage, as well, and catch fire.

Echo had nearly wiped out 3/4 of the bullywugs, but in the process had placed herself in harm's way, blocked Gimog from reaching the front-line, and likely alerted everything in the temple to their presence.

"Echo! Get back!" Hollidan warns, fighting off the surviving bullywugs. Sure enough, there are now two of the creatures that can easily reach her now.

Echo, now that the fireball did its job, quickly backs out of the way so that Gimog can take her place so that she doesn't get hurt. Once she is out of the way, she begins chanting. She holds up her hand, and points a finger at the first bullywug that entered into the room. From her fingertip, a bolt of light shoots out, zooms around Gimog, and hits the bullywug straight in the chest.

The two bullywugs nearest to Echo turn their wrath toward her. She sidesteps one strike, but is stabbed in the left shoulder by the other. Warm blood runs down her arm, dripping to the floor. Hollidan cries out, as he is hit again, too. Dropping his torch (the light of the fires Echo has started is more than enough to see by), he then raises his shield for further defense.

"Get away!" Nuvain warns, swinging his club at the bullywug that stabbed Echo, but the creature easily blocks it with his sword. While it's distracted, Echo backs away and starts chanting. She fires a missile of magic at the creature. It flies over and slams into its side. The bullywug croaks in pain, then just croaks as it falls to the ground. Gimog quickly hops over its body and strikes at the next bullywug, taking it down with his hammer.

"Hold the line!" Hollidan commands. "Nuvain, I need a heal!"

Echo lets in a sharp breath through her teeth as she looks down at the blood now dripping down her arm. Plus, she is now exhausted from casting her spells. Though, she knows she needs to help, so she steps in behind Gimog (as she wants to let Nuvain heal Hollidan). She pulls out three of her darts, and throws them at the bullywug directly in front of Hollidan.

Echo waits for Nuvain to go first. He steps over to Hollidan and praying, touches his back. The worst of the paladin's injuries heal, allowing him to continue fighting. Echo then moves behind Gimog and throws her darts. The first one misses, but the second one nails the bullywug right in the throat. It topples over, its long sticky tongue hanging out of its mouth.

Gimog quickly moves ahead, to stop any more from entering, and gets stabbed for his trouble by a new bullywug. But he gives as good as he gets, smacking it across the face with his hammer. Echo throws a third dart at the newcomer, but the bullywug blocks it with his sword.
