Magpie follows Laurana, the elves were being mean, and now some of the group had been taken by an ugly thing, she didn't like it.

There really isn't anything for Laurana or Magpie to do. Of the four elves, two are dead. One was healed by Goldmoon, so is perfectly fine. The fourth one was injured, but the elven medics are already attending to him.
Caramon's paralyzation wears off in about twenty minutes.

When Riverwind comes to Goldmoon to hug her, she holds him off for a moment. "I need to speak to the elven leader first" she whispers in their own language.
Before Porthios can leave, she stands in his way and bows to him. "One of your warriors has been healed by the power of Mishakal, the Godess of healing who has returned to this world. If more people worshipped and followed her, more warriors could be saved." She stands and waits for his answer before returning to Riverwind.
"Hold me close, my beloved. Let our love give us strength for what lies ahead." She closes her eyes and rests her head on his shoulder.

"Perhaps so," Porthios says. "But I fear it may be too late for that. Unless you are volunteering to abandon your group and accompany my people in their evacuation, there is no time for you to teach us anything." With that, he heads off.
