The Brink [of Madness] Act 1, Scene 1

A classic 2e Puzzle dungeon for High Level characters
Beware, this one is substantially longer and (IMHO) even harder than the legendary Tomb of Horrors!

[Ooc] From the spreadsheet you sent Noct it lools like you have abt 1475 gp left. That can be in any currency you like. Gems would be the most portable, but you can make it whatever you like really. If you want it listed on your sheet just let me know how you'd like it divided up.

Lord Torath is correct, it's 6pm on Day 2, Godsday the 4th of Reaping. I have been keeping track of 'current time' by updating the first post of this game thread.

"We didn't explicitly discuss that. I assumed even split. Or anything that would benefit the group would be dolled out."
Jag will trade for 2 pearls. But he will also accept the pearl Stephen traded for.
"Now to get the spell ready."

Well, that's certainly a way one can handle it. As long as everyone assumes the same thing, it can work out alright. How about we divide any monetary treasure into eight equal shares, one for each of us, with one left over for group expenses - Identification costs, additional supplies, you get the idea. When this is over, we can equally split anything left in that fund between us.

As far as magic items, I agree they should go to whoever can get the best use out of them.

“As far as magic items, I agree they should go to whoever can get the best use out of them.” Axid agrees with a nod of his head and a rather dwarves like 'hmmpf'.
You are talkin' to the holy symbol wearing,
Ruby ring wearing, kiss stealing; Woo!
Praying/healing, beholder riding, griffin flying
Son of a blowgun, and I'm having a hard time holding these Aboleth shoes down! WOO!

"The wealth, really does not concern me too much. But the right magic item, can mean life or death. Seems like we have a general consensus."

Pretty sure I will have to use a spell and rest to get ID going right?

Yeah, the options are basically
-Wait until a party member can memorize the spell
-Pay someone in camp extra to do the identify to save time (100 gp for casting +100gp/ item to be identified)
-I can roll for a small chance that someone in camp has an Identify scroll to sell that the party can buy and use themselves. Call it 20% chance. scroll will be 250 gp
TristenC wrote: Tue Mar 04, 2025 7:31 am A little while later a man in his 30s approaches them with an array of pearls and other small items common to spell components for sale. He also offers his service in Identifying items for 100 gp+100 gp/ item to be identified

[Ooc]Yes. Btb the spell takes 8 hrs, but homebrew I reduce that based on the Wiz lvl. For Jag it will only be 1 hr[/Ooc]

"Good sir, the curiosity has gotten the better of me. I would like to hire you today, to identify these items."
He will call for the group to bring the items they have found so far.

[Nocturno pays 100+3x100 => 400 gp]

The man accepts the gold and the items. He sets them out in an unoccupied tent with mundane supplies and begins the ritual. First he cleanses the items of any outside influences and then reads the auras and resonance each one carefully. After a few hours he is finished, weary but unharmed, and reports his findings.

The armor is of the typical type of basic magical protection. Only slightly above the weakest possible, but still useful to some.

He indicates the lavender and green stone, A quite rare and valuable aid to those facing spellcasters. This is an Ioun stone capable of protecting one against hostile magics of all but the most potent sort. It will absorbing them, but once it has taken all it can, it eill shatter. Truly rare, I am genuinely jealous. He says with a smile.

The last item is still a bit of a mystery. he indicates the green serpent ring. It seems to hold no special powers of it's own, though it has been 'marked' im a certain way not unlike a wizard mark. It seems to be an 'indicator' of some kind. I have heard of things like this used with other magics as sort of a 'permissive', a bit like an indication of rank. I wish I could study it further, but without references I doubt I would be able to discover much unless further divination were used.

====
-Suit of Magical Chain Mail +2 human sized (on body from hatch c)
-Stone, small. Ioun Stone, Lavender and Green (on body from hatch c)
absorbs up to 35 spell levels of offensive magic cast at the user. can absorb spells of up to 8th level

-Green Serpent ring (A3)
abilities detected are unclear. Seems only to be some kind of magical 'identifier' like a wizard mark or a . Possibly designed for other things to recognize it or mark the wearer as someone important. Not cursed (as far as they can tell)

[OoC]Did he ID the trolls' rings? Or are we assuming they're just non-resize-to-fit Invisibility Rings.

[That is what they seem to be based on Landro's investigation. If the party wants to pay the extra 100 to check one then we can lump that in with this casting, sure.]

[OoC]I'll leave that up to Nocturno, since Jag's apparently footing the bill for this casting. I expect we'll just stick with those three.

Jag is satisfied with the testing of the rings, he will leave them out. He decided not to wait, and has the gold to spare.

Hmmm... I cannot wear the chainmail without negatively affecting my mental abilities, and the stone does not seem any more useful to a psionicist than to anyone else in our group. As I did not participate in the risks of bringing these to the surface, I will stake no claim upon them." He pauses. "Can any in our party benefit from the chainmail? Is there anyone in camp who might be willing to trade something of similar value for it? It seems a shame to let it go to waste.
