Here's a thought I'd like to put out there (and seek your views).

What level of responsibility does the GM have for ensuring players add up awarded xp?

None. Their character their responsibility. BUT it would be nice to have a thread with Exp and Valuable items the party finds to take back to towns and sell.

I agree with Dargon. It would be nice to have a page where the GM tracks XPS awarded, treasure awarded, items we collect.

Tracking online through all the posts is challenging.

I echo Dargon's sentiment.
One way to make tracking xp easier on my char sheet is dating when you change your xp. That way, I know how far back in the posts I need to check when updating my xp.

RAW it's wasted (doesn't stack).
Suggestion from me is that one of them can be used to generate some temporary HP. That's if everyone (or the majority) is ok with the idea...
