Killing one to protect yourself would be expected, anyone with an ounce of sense would understand that. Hunting them, however... best not to be seen doing that at least... She grins in sad amusement, If you were attacked, you could kill one in the middle of a street and nobody would see, though they stood two paces away... most of them do not see what they do not want to see...

Pausing the wagon's progress she closes her eyes a moment. A light wind teases her hair and robes as she takes a slow, deep breath. Gradually the moment passes and she slowly opens her eyes. There is a place, safe for tonight, that we can reach.

The old woman snaps the reins and the cart trundles onwards through the forest. She remains silent for a time, eyes focused elsewhere and letting the horse take the natural path. The way is winding and the trail narrow; branches scraping against the wood panels of the vehicle with schreeeeech and creeeeak that seemed more the mournful whine of souls than the dragging of wood on wood.

The afternoon wears on until the way widens a bit and the trees become barely less clustered. Through the wall of grey-brown and evergreen woodland ahead, Pytor catches a glimpse of color… a bright reddish. Soon it becomes clear that a structure lies beyond the trees, and before long it comes into view… a barn in need of some repair stands at the edge of a half-cleared area. It runs a good 50 feet along one side, and half that width. Just beyond, Pytor can make out a tiny outhouse and a much larger farmhouse.

Marta seems to have gone strangely quiet for the last several hours, but finally she murmurs something. Safe here… for tonight at least…

"Rest here for a moment grandmother, and let me make certain." Hopping from the wagon, Pytor checks that his hammer is in place. The cold steel's feel on his hand brings a moment of calm and confidence to his soul. Thoughts of drink now forgotten, he looks and listens for signs of activity. Unless given an indication of something being amiss, Pytor walks openly towards the nearest structure, or one with activity, calling out "Hello!"

((Does the farmstead appear abandoned or merely fallen behind on upkeep?))

[at a distance, kind of between abandoned and poorly kept. As if someone had shirked it’s upkeep for a long time, but there are a couple of signs of recent activity.]

Marta waits, though she seems unconcerned about the danger.

With no one in sight, Pytor strolls out and calls aloud; but there is no response. Coming to the Barn first, he sees that the structure indeed looks all but abandoned, though it has indications of being used not terribly long ago… probably just the product of a lazy owner.

Circling around he passes a cord or two of firewood lining the southern side of the barn; part of it beginning to rot from disuse. He continues his circuit to the West side of the barn, where he finds the double-door closed but not locked. Hearing nothing inside, he risks a quick peek… Inside there is a modest horse-cart and four stalls, but no horses. There is also a tack-shed with tools and equipment for farming, hitching horses up and plowing; but most of them show some signs of neglect. One stall has a little rotting hay left, and there is no loft area.

As he is about to turn away, he spots something sticking out of the cart… it looks like the tip of a long spike… Making sure nothing is in the barn, he steps inside and finds a note written in a strange language, among a curious collection of old weapons!!! Examining them, he finds them heavier than expected. In fact, his blacksmithing background tells him that they most definitely made of pure iron, not steel as modern weapons are.

Once back outside, he sees that the Easternmost door of the farmhouse has been broken in!

He'll have to put some work into it, but the stall will be adequate to unhitch and board the team for the night. Perhaps with a little maneuvering of the cart, he could even get Marta's wagon inside?

Pytor slips the note into his shirt. "Perhaps Marta may understand this language?", he ponders. Intrigued by the novelty of such weapons Pytor takes a moment to survey their quality and method of forging. Glancing through the pile to see if a dagger, that he could slip into his boot, is among the lot, he otherwise entertains no thought of exchanging any with his own sturdier made gear.

Spying the damaged door Pytor pulls his hammer and creeps closer. If the damage looks recent, he listens and tries to enter as quietly as is possible for him. However, if the damage looks old he relaxes and once again calls out "Hello!" as he steps inside.

Pytor examines the barn interior. The cart is fairly empty and he should be able to move it by himself. It seems likely he could push it to the back of the barn at an angle enough to make room for the wagon as well. Pocketing the note, he quickly examines the weapons. They all seem to be sound and of decent workmanship, but nothing special. He roots through the pile, but finds no dagger; though the hand axe could easily be tucked behind his belt.

Moving to the farmhouse, he readies his hammer and takes a good look at the damage from an angle so as not to be visible from inside. The damage was certainly recent, but at least a day or two old. Stepping cautiously into the doorway, he sees a simple country kitchen. A modest, black iron stove stands in the west corner, with a small door beside it; likely leading to a pantry.

Another door to the southwest, partly open, seems to lead into a den area with a stone fireplace. A small door straight to the south stands ajar, and he can see a fur rug beyond; accompanied by the scent of an animal den.

A stairway leads off to the 2nd level to his right, and a circular table stands in the center of the room. The floor carries lots of tracks, including those that might belong to dogs or small wolves.

[can I get a picture for Pytor? I like to make map tokens for the chars]

Pytor slips the hand axe behind his belt. "Best not to dull my good blade on firewood with another so handy."

Pytor examines the tracks to see if he can identify the type and number of animals. Ignoring the pantry for the moment, he slowly makes his way to the southwest door. Feeling it wise to check the room beyond before passing by, he shoves the partially opened door with his hammer and peers inside.

({Made a quick search and posted a picture in character descriptions. Given time, I may stumble onto a better representation. Let me know if it suffices.))

[The description/picture looks good to me, thanks :) ]

Examining the tracks more closely, Pytor finds the dusty and faint muddy prints belong to small wolves; probably only a few months old. He also finds a few diverse boot prints having tracked dirt in from outside. The tracks come from a variety of feet, and it's impossible to track the number or movement of them in their overlapping travel.

The den is a cozy little area with a small stone fireplace near the door to the kitchen, a couch against the south wall next to a modest desk and chair, and small side table between two doors to the north. There is also a pair of windows and another door leading outside on the West wall.

The desk drawer remains open and empty, and the doors to the north are slightly ajar revealing a closet full of junk. The most interesting features in the room, however, are a trio of bloodstains on the ground, two near the door and a much larger one near the fireplace. They seem to have been wiped up with only a casual effort...

Pytor frowns at the scene before him and ponders whether to return to Marta. Deciding to press on, he makes a note to more thoroughly inspect the room later. Stepping back into the kitchen, he makes his way over to the small door on the south wall and takes a look inside.

Pytor pushes open the door to the small, windowless room. The musky scent of an animal den is strong here. The floor is lined with animal furs, and there is hair everywhere as if whatever lived here had done so for quite some time. There is a high concentration of wolf tracks near the entrance to this door, and it seems to have been the sleeping area for at least a couple of wolves...

Stepping back from the room, Pytor checks the pantry before moving up the stairs. "I need to hurry," he tells himself. "I doubt that the wolves have entirely abandoned this area. Still, if the house is empty I should be able to secure the doors and windows for the night at least. Plus, lock up the horses and wagon in the barn." He listens as best he can while moving about.

Pytor moves to the pantry and opens the door. Surprisingly the door itself seals well, as opposed to many other doors in the cabin that are somewhat crooked, and the clearly damaged doors from the kitchen to outside and the one to the den. The reason for the finer pantry becomes apparent immediately; almost the entire area is hanging with curing meats... there are dry-aging venison steaks, boar ribs, saltpork, jerky of various kinds, and even a few root vegetables stuffed in the lower shelves. Aside from that there are very few non-meat items.

In the back there is a thin board propped up against one of the shelves, it was having clearly been designed to hide the now-exposed alcove in the wall. Build sturdily into the alcove is a tall, narrow iron safe! A small cloth on the bottom bears indentions, some similar to those a pointed tip would leave, and one outline is clearly that of a dagger. It seems probable that the weapons in the barn were once stored here. Perhaps the note held more answers on that front.

Carefully he moves up the stairs to find a bedroom with a large wardrobe-style closet and a bedside table; but the latter only bears a small candle-stand and an empty cup. Three windows face out from here; one North, one South and one West. There is also a small door near the floor to the west that seems to lead to an attic crawlspace. He can see the roof from the West window. The roofing isn't in very good repair, which seems a general theme to the house itself.

The door to the wardrobe stands open, baggy looking clothes scattered about the floor too big for even Pytor’s size; though there is also a decent looking green-dyed wool jacket that would fit him. The small door near the floor is also open, revealing the crawlspace between the shorter portion of roof and what must be the ceiling downstairs. The space is packed with various kinds of useless junk and broken household items.

Pytor tries the jacket on for size and takes it if comfortable. Satisfied that no danger lurks within the farmhouse, he returns the hammer to his belt and quickly jogs back to Marta. "The house has been broken into but looks safe for the night. The barn is suitable to house the horses and store your wagon as well... I did find a strange note in a script unknown to me. Do you know these words on, grandmother?" He hands the note to Marta and begins leading the wagon towards the barn.

[Looking back, I realize I made a mistake about the note. I had thought it was in Harmonian, but I see now that it was in Elven all along. I suppose we can pretend it’s a different dialect of elven (it is from Krynn, not Genwald). He would normally still be able to read that, but maybe the author had bad handwriting ;) At any rate…]

Slipping on the coat, Pytor finds that it fits well enough, though it is covered in dog hair; simple enough to brush off.

Marta inspects the note closely. Curious… Basically it is a note to someone named Ontash. In general terms, it says that they found his stolen tools in the barn, and the ‘creature’ was dealt with. It also says that they found a hidden cache of weapons in the house, and he could make better use of them than they.

Pytor easily moves the cart out of the way and gets the horses stabled. It takes a little finesse to get the wagon into the barn so that it can be easily drawn out forward on the morrow, but they manage. There is no food fit for the horses left, the little remaining hay having rotted, but the old gypsy directs him to some fodder stored in one of the containers lashed to the side of the wagon. Once done, she moves towards the farmhouse and notes the broken door. Hmm… perhaps a small chair or table to keep the wind from blowing the broken door open. It will be chilly tonight I think, but a fire should keep things right.

While boarding the horse and wagon, Pytor looks to see if the tack and harness for the cart are there, planning to hook the cart to his horse in the morning and bring it along behind the wagon. He also looks around for signs of the "stolen tools" mentioned in the note. Once the barn door is secured he makes his way to the wood stack and gathers an armload of firewood avoiding the rotted pieces. After starting a fire, he goes back to the stack and grabs a heavy piece to place on the hearth before resting for the night. "There are some meats curing in the pantry, grandmother, along with a few other things. The bed upstairs looks comfortable. I'll rest on the couch and keep an eye on the fire tonight... Just let me get this door wedged shut and I'll give you a hand with whatever you need." Taking the hand ax, he splits a smaller piece of firewood until it is thin enough to wedge under the bottom of the door and kicks it tight. Pytor then braces the door with the kitchen chairs and table. "One thing confuses me, grandmother. Why would solid iron weapons be useful to anyone?"
