[You might want to take a quick look at the “Acquired Party Knowledge” thread entry on Skald, and the entries there for 7) Out Town, and 13) Upper Skald. Did you want magic missile twice?]

Adran passed the East gate, Entering Upper Skald. It had been an odd few days since finally tracking down Aglos. The fact that he had acquired both the scroll and a tome necessary for interpreting it was a boon… but his abrupt… transition into this strange place was troubling. The attack at the farmhouse had gone so quickly, the wolf-man driven off into the night. When the rest of the group left in the morning to track him, Adran and the gnome Cal had stayed behind. Something odd in the woods had caught his attentions… shapes moving in a light mist. He couldn’t be sure, but his instinct told him it was Aglos… searching for him. Once he was sure it was safe, Adran and Cal had gone to see if they could find the trail, but it had vanished abruptly… almost as if the mists themselves had taken the man from his path just as they had Adran from Aglos’ clutches...

Very soon, the pair discovered that they too were lost; the woods not making sense for where they had been. Just before nightfall, they came upon a camp of gypsies; some of whom fortunately spoke Elven. Making camp with them, he learned that he was far from where he had been that morning, but that they would help him reach where he needed to be. The gypsies were lively folk, playing their folk music and dancing late into the night. Cal joined in, hopping about with spritely dexterity. As the evening drew on, Adran got the chance to finally crack the tome after preparing his spells. While Adran had not expected the journey to take several days, he was thankful for the chance to study the book in relative safety of the camp.

The book proved to be a hand-written volume, penned by a man named Tannis Feywald and written with a strange, sparkling black ink. Over the next few nights he studies it voraciously. Tannis poses the theory of the act of reaching through the veil of worlds [planar travel] expounded beyond the normally accessible elemental, inner and outer planes. He refers to reaching ‘parallel’ planes, alternate existances, and for contacting much ‘Higher’ and ‘Lower’ planes. He achieved the former briefly by contacting those considered ‘gods’ by some, but not through divine magic. He began to postulate that such power could be achieved by mortals (or semi-mortals like demihumans) through decades of hard study to prepare themselves for what he considered “True Understanding”. Something that would make the use of magic so easy it required but a bare thought. He compares it to the difference between rolling a man-sized stone uphill and dragging a brick with a horse. At first it is difficult to determine what the volume has to do with the scroll, until he realizes that certain passages are phrased oddly; almost as if they were written in a strange code. The elf makes notes accordingly, but there is a reference to yet another volume.

During the nights, far off howling and the cries of animals break the relative quiet. The gypsies do much to keep spirits high with their music and dancing. The elderly matriarch of the caravan, known as the Raunie, assured them that her Telling revealed the path was safe. Rather than following the roads, the wagons kept to narrow trails during the day, strangely barely wide enough for the small caravan to pass. The final night, the old woman had told his fortune…

Her red-tassled shawl drawn close to frame a face weathered by sun and age. Long and strange your journey has been… her reedy voice creaks. The secrets you sought eluding you for so long. Yet the acquisition of the scroll is but the first step. Many worlds you may see before the end, an invaluable seed of the light of knowledge planted in each; much like the volume you have poured over these last few nights. Danger hounds your step; the self-same whose path you dogged for so many many years. Though you hunted alone, there is much safety in numbers now that the roles have reversed… Be steadfast and you may yet find the answers you seek…

The elf shook himself from the reverie, his attention back on the town around him. Everyone seemed to speak that strange, musical language so oddly familiar yet foriegn. Fortunately the gate-guard had spoken a smattering of Elven, and given him simple directions to where the other outlanders would be today… The Old Kartakan Inn…

[Adran would also recall the others are meeting Akriel there for some business about a Crown, that might be able to free them all from this strange land of mist.]

TristenC, first and foremost - you are an excellent writer! Secondly, Adran will memorize Armor, Magic Missiles, and Web. Finally, Adran will hurry as fast as he can to meet the other outlanders (due to his previous fortune about safety in numbers) and Akriel at the Old Kartakan Inn.

[Lol. kind of you to say. Ok, I updated the spell list. It would be nice if you could put a physical description for Adran in the "Cast of Victims" thread for the benefit of the other players. :) ]

The directions were simplicity itself, follow the main road north to the toll bridge, then turn East along the river to find the inn just against the waterfalls. The crowd keeps their distance from the Elf, clearly not used to outsiders. Everywhere he looks he sees only humans, most with blonde to white hair, and some with jet-black. But everyone... everyone has violet-blue eyes...

Reaching the toll bridge he spots a marvelous ebony hulled river boat rocking slowly in the water to his left. Secured to a private wharf with a stout rope, this craft sports a brilliant red canopy to shade the luxurious interior. Every inch of the craft is a masterpiece of artistic design. Although there are a number of other fine ships docked here, none of them compares to this excellent vessel.
The entire area around it is walled off with a wooden fence. The wood, although clearly old, is well maintained and shows signs of constant upkeep. A single gate, clearly designed more for privacy than to ward off attackers, stands closed with a sturdy lock on it. A small guard shack stands next to the gate with an engraved sign reading "Private docks, keep off" in Harmonian, displayed for all to see. [Area 12]

Back to the east he spots a small island bridge leading north out of town. Turning east as instructed he follows a narrower road running beside the river, leading towards the edge of town. Nearing the place, he witnesses a breathtaking sight. From atop a high, stone cliff, twin waterfalls plunge downward to shatter what might otherwise be a peaceful pond. The roar is incredible, muting all other sounds, and a cloud of mist fills the air. In the center of the bubbling, churning lake (known locally as The Cauldron) stands a natural stone island. Long ago polished to a smooth, rounded form by the raging water it now supports a proud and stately structure: The Old Kartakan Inn.
The perpetual fog of The Cauldron's waters hangs heavy about the inn, giving the place an almost supernatural look. Here and there, moving bodies can be seen in the mists. The obscuring properties of this shroud, however, make it difficult to tell if they are human or some form of ghostly apparition. [Area 1]

[Please check out areas 12 and 1 on the Skald section of the "Acquired Party Knowledge" thread You can probably peek at some of the nearby listings there too.]

Despite the potential to run into ghostly apparitions, Adran decides that he will cross the bridge to the Inn - after all, he was supposed to meet the other outlanders and their hostess on that very island. While crossing the bridge, Adran will keep his hand on the hilt of his sword and move at a slower than normal pace....just in case things get interesting!

Once he arrives at the Inn, Adran will immediately join his fellow outlanders in the restaurant where they must already be speaking to Akriel.

[Thanks :) Actually, they're not here yet, but they will be soon]

Crossing the bridge cautiously, the mist from the falls damps his clothes as the roar mutes all other sound. The front of the inn is bordered by a post-fence guiding them to a short set of stairs that leads up to an octagonal tower attached to the front. The group also note a rather plain small door to one side, obviously a servant's entrance.

Pushing aside the heavy oak doors of the inn releases a shuddering creaking noise and reveals an entrance chamber. Here the roar of the waters is still audible, but not overwhelming. Set back on either side is a hat rack next to a bench. Alcoves jut off on both sides of the benches where various coats and outer garments hang. The room is unusually dark and the odor of wet leather hangs in the air. At the far end of the room is another set of heavy looking doors. Seeing the next set of doors as the only way to continue, Adran opens them as well.

The thick, oaken doors leading into this are from the cloak room open with almost no sound to reveal a long hallway. The odor of cooking is sweet in the air, sparking memories of fine meals and relaxing evenings with friends. The basic decor of the area is elegant, but in a modest and unassuming way. Light is provided by a series of fine lamps secured high on walls. Beside the hall's entrance on the south wall is a small alcove in which several shawls and other delicate garments hang.

To the east is an arched hallway leading down some steps and ending in a thick, heavy curtain of some dark brown fabric. You can hear a pair of low voices coming from beyond it and the inviting smell of fine spirits is strong. To the north, a clerk works behind a desk, obviously handling the affairs of the inn. Behind him, a hallway runs into the heart of the building. To the west, is a busy dining section with a number of tables set out for the guests. The smell of cooking clearly comes from this area.

The area West is obviously a dining hall. It is naturally lit by large windows along its North and South sides. Well constructed tables are scattered about this room in an orderly manner. Despite the fact that they are modestly set, a short, thick candle burns inside a sphere of red glass at the center of each table. At first glance, it is easy to mistake these pinpoints of light for the burning eyes of feral creatures. The smell of good food, while present throughout the inn, is overwhelming here.

It is easy to see why the Old Kartakan Inn has acquired its reputation for fine dining. At this hour the tables are mostly full, though there is one group of people rising to leave. The hall stretches westward to a finer dining area separated by a column, and dining bays in sunken alcoves near the windows. The view of the waters and rolling mist is fantastic and far less damp inside. Glancing into the dining areas he does not immediately see anyone he recognizes. Adran is certain this is the day, but it is early yet and he is uncertain of the exact time of the meeting.

Since he is early, Adran will find the nearest host/hostess and ask if they know of a person named Akriel who he was there to meet. If Akriel is there, he will introduce himself - if not, he will ask to be seated at a seat where he can keep an eye on all who come and go to watch for his fellow outlanders and possibly Akriel. He will prefer to be seated at a bar so as to not needlessly take a table for an undetermined amount of time.

Adran soon finds a hostess, but the girl's Elven is not very good. She quickly finds another server, named Lyla, who speaks it much more fluently. Akriel? Oh, yes. She's a waitress here... ummm... I Haven't seen her today, but I can ask around for you. And your name is?

[Adran is currently near the dining area. He can wait somewhere in area 3 (common dining) area 12 (the front desk) or area 9 (the separate bar behind the curtain previously mentioned)]

Adran tells Lyla his name and to send Akriel over to his table in area 3 when she arrives. He makes sure to get a table large enough for the group and orders a meal and ale. He will watch for all who come and go while waiting.

Adran passes his message along and takes a seat at the only available table. Lyla sends the message via another server and waits on him herself, being one of the few who speak Elven well. Adran is brought a healthy breakfast of roasted beets stuffed with well-seasoned sausage, mild peppers and onions. The Ale has a rich, full flavor to it and Lyla mentions that it is brewed locally.

Adran takes his meal in relative peace, though many of the locals seem to be casting half-hidden glances at the armed elf. Lyla returns after a while to inform him that Akriel is nowhere to be found at the moment and not responding to a knock at her door, but they will slip a note under the door to her room. The elf finishes his meal at a leisurely pace, downing the final forkful just as he spots the redheaded bard walking in, closely followed by the group he met on the road, as well as some new people.
